Colorado governor hopefuls court support at state assemblies
DENVER (AP) — Colorado's major party assemblies on Saturday feature a surprisingly open Republican governor's contest with candidates courting delegates loyal to President Donald Trump and a Democratic competition pledging an anti-Trump vision for the state.The Republican State Assembly in Boulder and the Democratic State Assembly in Broomfield will help shape who gets into Colorado's gubernatorial primaries June 26. Candidates can qualify by submitting enough voter signatures from across the state or by winning at least 30 percent of the delegate vote at the assemblies.Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper is term-limited.Democrat Mike Johnston, a former state senator, has successfully petitioned. Kansas GOP chairman drops out of secretary of state’s race
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Republican Party's chairman has dropped out of the secretary of state's race.Kelly Arnold announced Thursday that he has ended his campaign for the GOP nomination so that he can "fully focus" on electing fellow Republicans to office this year.Arnold has been the party's state chairman since 2013 and has also served as Sedgwick County's elected clerk since 2009.Incumbent Secretary of State Kris Kobach is seeking the GOP nomination for governor.The other Republicans running to replace Kobach are Kansas House Speaker Pro Tem Scott Schwab of Olathe, House Elections Committee Chairman Keith Esau of Olathe and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Craig McCullah of Topeka.Democratic candidates include state Sen. Former secretary of state Brown says he’ll run for governor
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown is running for governor.Brown's campaign said Wednesday that he's seeking the Democratic nomination. He had been exploring a run as an independent.Brown was elected to a single term in 2002. He says the state has problems and he's convinced of the need for change.Brown ran in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in 2006 against Sheldon Whitehouse, and largely disappeared from politics after he bowed out.He has been active with the anti-nuclear weapons group he co-founded, Global Zero.At least three Republicans have announced challenges to Democratic Gov. Kansas lawmakers switches to running for state treasurer
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas lawmaker has switched to running for state treasurer after planning to seek the Democratic nomination for secretary of state.State Sen. Marci Francisco of Lawrence announced her decision Thursday. Democrats had not found a candidate to challenge incumbent Republican Treasurer Jake LaTurner.Former Uber and Google executive Brian McClendon of Lawrence is running for the Democratic nomination for secretary of state. Francisco's switch likely heads off a primary contest for him.Francisco said in a statement that Kansas Democratic Party Chairman John Gibson asked her to switch races. She was first elected to the Senate in 2004 after serving as Lawrence's mayor.Then-Gov. Sam Brownback appointed LaTurner treasurer last year.
