Days before, President Trump said blithely: “We’ll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon. Let the other people take care of it.” The “other people” — Assad, Russia, and Iran — proceeded to do just that, killing dozens of people in the city of Douma with chemical weapons. This was the most blatant of an estimated eight such attacks this year. It followed a month of slaughter in the area, through which Assad and his allies killed an estimated 1,600 people. Throughout, Trump said absolutely nothing. Advertisement … [Read more...] about The world pays for Trump’s indifference to human rights

This county voted for Trump — but it’s a lot like the sanctuary cities he loathes
PIERSON, Florida — When a trio of squad cars pulls up to the fern field, the workers — bent over, piling up bundles of freshly cut feather-like fronds in the late-morning sun — grow tense.Sgt. Roy Galarza, 34, and his brothers, both sheriff's deputies, jump out. Roy jokes in Spanish about who will cut the most ferns that day, and greets an uncle who works there. Slowly, the workers, many of whom are undocumented immigrants from Mexico, walk over to the cruisers and begin to chat: One woman complains about a traffic stop; another talks about a friend's misunderstanding with police involving her children. The Galarza brothers — Roy, Daniel, 36, and Billy, 26 — aren't there to arrest anyone. They're visiting the fields as part of the Volusia County Sheriff Department's redoubled efforts to build trust in an immigrant community that fears the police and the deportations President Donald Trump has promised.Trump has repeatedly demonized so-called "sanctuary … [Read more...] about This county voted for Trump — but it’s a lot like the sanctuary cities he loathes

Country music icon Shania Twain says she “would have voted for” President Donald Trump if she were an American citizen, admitting that “he seemed honest” during the 2016 presidential election against Hillary Clinton. In an interview with The Guardian, Twain — a Canadian citizen — said she would have supported Trump in the election against Clinton because she does not “want bullshit” in politics.“I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest.Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both,” Twain told the outlet during a candid interview. “If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit,” she said. “I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?”Country singer Shania Twain performs her hit “Any Man of Mine” at the opening of the 1995 Country Music … [Read more...] about Shania Twain: ‘I Would Have Voted For’ Trump, ‘He Seemed Honest’

Helderman, The Washington Post Published 3:21 pm, Saturday, April 21, 2018 When Donald Trump won the presidency, his longtime attorney Michael Cohen seemed in position for a coveted spot in the senior ranks of the White House. At one point, Cohen topped a list of five candidates for White House counsel, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post. He suggested to some Trump allies that he might make a good chief of staff. But when Trump built his West Wing team, the brash New York lawyer did not make the cut. Some in Trump's inner circle worried about blowback from Cohen's associations and unorthodox tactics in fixing the New York developer's problems, Trump associates said.
