It is set to go into effect Friday. Leon Circuit Judge John C. Cooper began hearing arguments in the case days after the U.S. Supreme Court ended federal protections for abortion by overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire
With Roe v. Wade overturned , exceptions to abortion bans — such as in the case of rape or incest, or for a pregnant person’s safety — are expected to be the only avenue to getting abortions in many states. But meeting the qualifications for those asterisks to the bans can be complex and traumatizing, experts say. For starters, exceptions for rape and incest are uncommon. The Guttmacher Institute , a research organization that supports reproductive rights, anticipates 26 states certain or likely to ban abortion now that there are no federal protections. Among those 26 states, there are about 41 abortion bans total, with some states having more than one ban, it said. Just 10 of the 41 bans have exceptions for rape and incest. In the states that do have rape and incest exceptions, requirements vary. Many, such as Utah, require victims of sexual assault to file a police report. Given that more than 2 out of 3 sexual assaults go unreported, according to the Rape, Abuse … [Read more...] about Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, one company has been celebrated online after vowing to pay the travel expenses of employees seeking an abortion in another state. An employee of the unnamed company took to Reddit to express surprise at the firm's promise after reading it in a company-wide email. "I work in retail so I didn't think much of it. When skimming it, I realized it was regarding Roe vs Wade. Part of me figured it would just be corporate fluff where they pretend to take a side," the employee wrote in a post shared to the "Antiwork" subreddit. The subreddit usually sees posts from people unhappy about the working world, but this one was an exception. "That's until I got to the second paragraph where it informed me effective immediately, they will be covering traveling expenses for employees in a state where abortions are illegal," they wrote. "I hope other companies will follow suit, as a way to fight back. It's not perfect, but it's … [Read more...] about Praise for company offering to pay abortion travel expenses to legal states

VP Harris: 13 States Not Having Abortion Rape Exception ‘Absolutely Unthinkable’
Vice President Kamala Harris said Monday on CNN’s “The Lead” that the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade has trigger laws in 13 states banning abortion without exceptions, including cases of rape or incest, was “absolutely unthinkable.” Anchor Dana Bash said, “Justice Thomas did write a concurring opinion saying the court should reconsider other cases of precedent that protect same-sex marriage, contraception, intimacy, and more. Do you think that the Supreme Court is on a path to reverse those as well?” Harris said, “I definitely believe this is not over. I do. I think he just said the quiet part out loud. And I think that is why we all must really understand the significance of what just happened. This is profound. And the way that this decision has come down has been so driven, I think, by the politics of the issue versus what should be the values that we place on freedom and liberty in our country. Right? The right to privacy. Let’s think of this in the … [Read more...] about VP Harris: 13 States Not Having Abortion Rape Exception ‘Absolutely Unthinkable’
