To look at it, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was not a total shocker because of its historical ties and shared Soviet history. For Russia, Ukraine was a way to regain its lost glory at the peak of the Soviet expansion. However, a more strategic and immediate reason for Russia’s invasion lies in the eastward expansion of NATO and the pro-western stance of the current Ukrainian government, which Russia considers a threat lurking on its borders. On the other hand, a poll conducted by the International Republican Institute revealed that Ukrainians perceive Russia as an imperial power seeking to trample on their sovereignty and territorial integrity, with nearly 80 per cent of the population wanting to join the European Union. The world is still coming to terms with Russia’s Ukrainian invasion and the scale of the consequent humanitarian catastrophe. On February 24, 2022, in a televised address, Putin ordered military tanks to run over Ukraine in a “special military operation” to … [Read more...] about Will The Unification Of The West Reside In World War II Style Alliances?

US Open provides much-needed break from trials and tribulations of LIV Golf civil war
In a period like no other, the world of golf finds itself in a battling civil war following the controversial introduction of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series last week. The newly born circuit has seemingly trampled on the soul of the sport, leaving the iconic traditions and integrity in its wake. The mega money on offer has lured away some of the golf’s biggest names - with the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter all pledging their allegiances to Greg Norman’s new Saudi-backed golfing empire. Despite pocketing millions, the breakaway rebels could well have surrendered their biggest asset of all in PGA Tour membership. LIV Golf’s founding playing members have all been issued suspensions from the PGA Tour’s chief Jay Monahan, with further sanctions from the likes of the Masters and Ryder Cup expected. As well as the sport’s leading circuit turning its back on the LIV rebels, a number of fellow stars - and friends - have … [Read more...] about US Open provides much-needed break from trials and tribulations of LIV Golf civil war
Ian Poulter to appeal PGA Tour ban of LIV Golf players as civil war continues to erupt
Ian Poulter is set to appeal his suspension from the PGA Tour after competing in this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Series event in St Albans. Poulter is one of many stars who has joined the controversial circuit, and is playing at Centurion Club this week. Within minutes of the inaugural event kicking off on Thursday, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan revealed that all those competing on the rebel circuit were in fact suspended. In a statement the Tour boss said: “Their participation in the Saudi Golf League/LIV Golf event is in violation of our Tournament Regulations. "The same fate [suspension] holds true for any other players who participate in future Saudi Golf League events in violation of our Regulations.” Following the sanction, Poulter revealed he would be appealing the decision, describing the ban as making ‘no sense’. While competing in Hertfordshire, he said: “I will appeal for sure. It makes no sense. “Having two Tour cards and the ability to play golf all … [Read more...] about Ian Poulter to appeal PGA Tour ban of LIV Golf players as civil war continues to erupt
Rookie on F1 Grid | Raise Your Car or Race Your Car? It’s Lone Wolff vs The Rest in F1’s Latest Civil War
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport worldwide and has gained a massive following in recent years even in countries that don’t get to roll out the red carpet for racing; India being one of those countries and this author being one of those followers. This column is my attempt to connect with other new fans of the sport and share with them my journey of exploring this fast, furious, and yes, at times, frustrating, sport. Be careful what you wish for. After the back-breaking Baku race made Lewis Hamilton the go-to-meme for millennial health issues, Mercedes drummed up support in the paddock for the FIA to do something about porpoising . The FIA obliged, but its fix may end up biting Mercedes in the rear wing, dragging Ferrari for good measure, working Red Bull into a frenzy. And the Netflix cameras are watching it all. Let’s take it from the top. For the uninitiated, the phenomenon giving porpoises – cute aquatic mammals that resemble dolphins – a bad rep is the vertical … [Read more...] about Rookie on F1 Grid | Raise Your Car or Race Your Car? Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India
Recent investigative reports ( The Indian Express , June 19-22, 2022) bring to light proposals for deletions and changes to school textbooks across the board. The aim, purportedly, is to reduce the load on school students who have suffered a loss of learning due to extended shutdowns during the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, the changes made in the history textbooks specifically target certain areas of India’s past and will result in an ideological shift in history teaching at the school level. Curricular changes The Government is currently undertaking a series of curricular changes. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports recently tabled its Report on the Reforms in Content and Design of School Text books (November 30, 2021). The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is already in the process of formulating the new National Curricular Framework, which will direct the syllabi of central and State … [Read more...] about Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India
Pink urges anti-abortion fans not to listen to her music: “We’re fine”
Pop star Pink has made her feelings towards the anti-abortion movement incredibly clear, suggesting they never listen to her music ever again. In the light of the overturning of Roe v. Wade , the singer, whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore, sent out an impassioned tweet over the weekend. There has been a number of protests held since the Supreme Court made a ruling that returns "the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives." Celebrities have reacted with fury while Democratic politicians have also voiced their disapproval of the Supreme Court's decision. Musician Olivia Rodrigo even staged a musical protest against the decision at the Glastonbury music festival in the U.K. "Let's be clear: if you believe the government belongs in a woman's uterus, a gay persons business or marriage, or that racism is okay," Pink wrote on Twitter , before continuing, in all caps, "Then please in the name of your lord never f******listen to my music again." She … [Read more...] about Pink urges anti-abortion fans not to listen to her music: “We’re fine”

Nota Movie Review: Vijay Devarakonda Shines in Engaging Political Thriller
Nota Cast: Vijay Devarakonda, Sathyaraj, Nassar Director: Anand Shankar We have seen stars play the reluctant politician before. Ranbir Kapoor in Prakash Jha's Raajneeti and Mahesh Babu in Bharat Ane Nenu were forced to take charge of their father's political empire when a crisis beckoned them from their luxurious life abroad. Vijay Deverekonda, easily the most promising actor to emerge from Telugu cinema since Mahesh Babu, plays the scion of a political family who finds himself sucked into the murky politics of present-day India where horse-trading and money laundering is a way of life. We get big doses of both in this headline-hefty political parable. Devarakonda fits into the role of the questioning chief minister with a hand-in-glove familiarity. He challenges the status quo without assuming messianic ambitions. He is at once the dynastic insider in Indian politics by birth and the cynical outsider by nature. Watch how Devarakonda's Varun combats the lazy indifferent … [Read more...] about Nota Movie Review: Vijay Devarakonda Shines in Engaging Political Thriller
Saudi LIV Series snub as rebel tour fails to secure UK TV deal despite pitches
The inaugural Saudi-backed LIV Golf tournament has failed to secure a UK television deal despite the rights reportedly being offered to major channels. The 54-hole tournament gets underway on Thursday, with a prize fund of £3.8 million on offer to the winner. Overall, £25 million will be distributed to the 48-man field, with a team competition running alongside the individual event. And the rebel venture, the brainchild of LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman , has landed some savage blows to the PGA Tour this week. The notion that the first event would be short of star power was dismissed when Phil Mickleson confirmed he would be returning from a prolonged break from the sport to take his place in St Albans . Former world No 1 Dustin Johnson also shocked fans by revealing he had resigned his membership from the PGA Tour to sign up with Norman , making him ineligible for next season's Ryder Cup . And now Bryson DeChambeau has made a u-turn on his previous stance, and will play … [Read more...] about Saudi LIV Series snub as rebel tour fails to secure UK TV deal despite pitches
