Engaged? Check. Anxious? Check. With weeks to go until the November midterm elections, more young Americans are interested but, according to a new poll, they're also feeling more anxious about the results. A poll released Wednesday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV found that more young people now say they are feeling anxious about the midterms, compared to July. Nearly half of young Americans ages 15 to 34 now say that they are anxious about the midterms, up from 36 percent in the earlier poll. The increase is most pronounced among young Democrats: 61 percent expressed anxiety compared with 39 percent in July. Don't tell 20-year-old Nestor Aguilera he can't effect change in politics. The Indiana University business major protested outside President Donald Trump's recent appearance in Aguilera's home of Elkhart, Indiana. And while he admits he didn't vote in 2016, he's promising to show up for this fall's midterm elections. "If young people decide to go out there and vote, we have the power to affect what the government does," Aguilera said. "We could have a big impact." Aguilera is among a small — but significant — surge of young people who say they feel politically empowered in latest Youth Political Pulse survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV. It's a change from a past survey that comes after a school shooting in Florida that elevated the voices of high school students in American politics, and five months before Americans will decide whether Trump's Republican Party will maintain control of Congress for another two years. By Giorgos Koulouris With the advent of the 2008 financial crisis – and particularly in the last few years – the EU has been dealing with the spectre of populism. Imposed austerity measures and an increase in youth unemployment have served only to intensify the threat. Isolated and socially excluded, the continent’s young people have become more vulnerable to the promises of populist politicians. For this reason, I believe the EU should focus its attention more on tailoring policies to address problems facing its youth population to engage them more in politics and stop populism in its tracks. Populism and poverty are two issues that are inextricably intertwined, given that the latter facilitates the rise of the former. Populism has always been a major threat for democracy, but after the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, the threat has increased significantly. Populist movements - both leftwing and rightwing - have strengthened their influence in several … [Read more...] about To safeguard democracy, the EU must improve the lives of young people
