Bankrupt Sri Lanka seeks urgent help to feed children

August 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Sri Lanka issued an urgent appeal on Monday to tackle rapidly spreading malnutrition among children as its economic crisis leaves nine out of 10 people dependent on state handouts. The Ministry for Women and Child Affairs said they were seeking private donations to feed possibly several hundred thousand children wasting due to insufficient food. The bankrupt state, grappling with Sri Lanka's worst economic crisis since independence, was unable to sustain welfare. "When the Covid pandemic was at its peak, the problem was bad, but now, with the economic crisis, the situation is far worse," secretary Neil Bandara Hapuhinne told reporters in Colombo. Hapuhinne said they had counted 1,27,000 malnourished children among the 5,70,000 girls and boys below the age of five in mid-2021. Since then, he estimated the numbers have increased several fold with the full impact of rampant inflation and dire shortages of food and other essentials. He said the number of people receiving direct … [Read more...] about Bankrupt Sri Lanka seeks urgent help to feed children

Bring back the dhow route

August 4, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

A Chinese military vessel is scheduled to call at the Sri Lankan Port of Hambantota . The Indian Government, with their concerns for Indian security, has raised the issue with the Sri Lankan government . The Sri Lankan government is heavily in debt and distress partly because of the mega infrastructure of the Hambantota port and many other such projects. The Hambantota port is now the property of a Chinese corporation, having been swapped for part of Sri Lanka debt to a variety of Chinese entities. China’s interests in the Indian Ocean grew in the context of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. The OBOR consists of two components; namely the Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI) and the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB). It constitutes a massive geopolitical project that aims to construct landscapes to enable flow of trade and investment by ‘promoting economic cooperation and connectivity’ between Asia, West Asia, Africa, and Europe. Centralising trade routes In the last one … [Read more...] about Bring back the dhow route

3 Yrs of Article 370 Abrogation: Stronger Integration of J&K with Indian Union is Good News for Kashmiris

August 6, 2022 by www.news18.com

Dynast politics has an expiry date. Once, the surname Gandhi made you a genuine heavyweight, but with Rahul Gandhi losing Amethi, a family bastion, that’s gone. After Bal Thackeray’s demise, Uddhav Thackeray, as we have seen recently, could not keep the party together, just by virtue of being a Thackeray. The Akali Dal, initially created to democratise the Gurdwaras in conjunction with the struggle against British colonialism, when reduced to a Badal family enterprise allowing Punjab to become a dope haven, is now quite discredited. The pattern could repeat itself in J&K too, with the Abdullahs and Muftis feeling threatened that their game could be up. Thus, their rallying point has become the restoration of Article 370. But as a Kashmiri myself, I ask the youth of the Valley — how will reviving that dead letter help? It is quite funny to see some people argue that militancy and stone-pelting have not completely ended because of the abrogation, as if the abrogation was … [Read more...] about 3 Yrs of Article 370 Abrogation: Stronger Integration of J&K with Indian Union is Good News for Kashmiris
