Sri Lanka issued an urgent appeal on Monday to tackle rapidly spreading malnutrition among children as its economic crisis leaves nine out of 10 people dependent on state handouts. The Ministry for Women and Child Affairs said they were seeking private donations to feed possibly several hundred thousand children wasting due to insufficient food. The bankrupt state, grappling with Sri Lanka's worst economic crisis since independence, was unable to sustain welfare. "When the Covid pandemic was at its peak, the problem was bad, but now, with the economic crisis, the situation is far worse," secretary Neil Bandara Hapuhinne told reporters in Colombo. Hapuhinne said they had counted 1,27,000 malnourished children among the 5,70,000 girls and boys below the age of five in mid-2021. A Chinese military vessel is scheduled to call at the Sri Lankan Port of Hambantota . The Indian Government, with their concerns for Indian security, has raised the issue with the Sri Lankan government . The Sri Lankan government is heavily in debt and distress partly because of the mega infrastructure of the Hambantota port and many other such projects. The Hambantota port is now the property of a Chinese corporation, having been swapped for part of Sri Lanka debt to a variety of Chinese entities. China’s interests in the Indian Ocean grew in the context of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. The OBOR consists of two components; namely the Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSRI) and the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB). The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022 through a voice vote. Earlier in the day, the House was adjourned due to sloganeering the House. The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 was withdrawn by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as listed in the Supplementary List of Business of the Lower House for the day. The Centre also tabled the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. After the lunch break, the Upper House began a discussion on the National Anti-Doping Bill, 2022. During the discussion, several members expressed their support for the bill, however, also made suggestions about its shortcomings. The Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022 is also scheduled to be discussed for passing in the Upper House on Wednesday. Eighth Edition of Covelong Surf, Music and Fitness Festival to Kickstart on August 5
