TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The Latest on the New Jersey Legislature’s effort to legalize sports betting (all times local): 1:50 p.m. New Jersey lawmakers are rethinking a law that would have banned one Atlantic City casino from offering sports betting. The state Assembly is expected to amend its proposed sports betting laws to allow casinos that own more than 10 percent of a sports team to still offer sports betting, but only on sports other than those in which they own a team. That would let the Golden Nugget back in the game. Texas billionaire Tilman Fertitta owns the Golden Nugget and the NBA’s Houston Rockets. Sports betting bill expected to pass New Jersey legislature
(Reuters) - New Jersey’s legislature is expected to pass a bill on Thursday to regulate and tax sports betting at casinos and racetracks, which would make it one of the first states to legalize the activity following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last month. Governor Phil Murphy still would have to sign the legislation before operators could start taking sports wagers. A state legislative committee advanced the bill on Tuesday without any of the fraud-fighting measures requested by professional sports leagues. New Jersey and other states are racing for a piece of the estimated $150 billion spent on illegal annual wagers in the United States, after the court in May overturned a 1992 law that had banned sports wagering except in a few places, including Las Vegas. Delaware, which already had limited sports wagers, rolled out full-scale betting on Tuesday. MOSCOW (Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday at his annual phone-in that Vitaly Mutko, who oversaw sport at the height of Russia’s doping scandal, had significantly contributed to sport in Russia. New Jersey legislature expected to approve sports betting law
New Jersey's proposed sports betting law is heading down to the wire, with final legislative approval expected on Thursday. But it's anyone's bet when Gov. Phil Murphy might sign it and the cash can start changing hands. Despite the desire of Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks to begin taking bets Friday morning, it is uncertain when the Democratic governor will let them. He previously voiced support for sports betting before the details of an actual bill were written. Three weeks ago, New Jersey prevailed in a Supreme Court case that struck down a federal law limiting sports betting to just four states. Now, any state is free to adopt laws legalizing it, and analysts expect most to do so. A report this week by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming predicted that only six of the 50 states will not have approved sports betting by 2023.
