The United Democratic Front (UDF) will continue its agitation till the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government declares a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the observation of a High Court Judge on the controversial revelations made by Swapna Suresh, an accused in the gold smuggling case, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has said. Inaugurating a collectorate march organised by the UDF in Thrissur on Saturday demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he said the Chief Minister had to answer the questions raised by the Opposition in the case. The Chief Minister feared an investigation as he had something to hide, he said. Mr. Vijayan was scared of Swapna. If she was telling lies, why was the government not filing a defamation case against her. The Chief Minister was evading the questions by the Opposition in the Assembly. Mr. Satheesan demanded an investigation into the allegation of attempting to influence Swapna through mediators. … [Read more...] about CM can’t evade questions of Oppn.: Satheesan

Garland, Cavaliers agree to 5-year, $193 million extension
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cavaliers All-Star point guard Darius Garland has agreed to a five-year, $193 million contract extension, his agent Rich Paul told the Associated Press on Saturday. Garland's deal is the largest in franchise history. The fifth overall pick in 2019, Garland has quickly developed into one of the NBA's top point guards. Last season, he averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists in 68 games while helping the Cavs win 22 more games than the previous season. The 22-year-old Garland has improved statistically each season, but beyond that, he has grown as a leader for a rising Cleveland team that just missed the playoffs last season. Garland agreed to the same deal that another elite young guard, Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies, struck earlier in the week as the majority of the league’s offseason business began getting underway. Garland’s extension begins in the 2023-24 season and, for now, would see him making just over $33 million in the first year and escalating … [Read more...] about Garland, Cavaliers agree to 5-year, $193 million extension
Anthem-Kneeler Megan Rapinoe to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
Megan Rapinoe, anthem kneeler and outspoken advocate of almost every left-wing cause, is set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Joe Biden. The announcement came Friday that Rapinoe, a captain on the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), and 16 others had been selected to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor. While the USWNT has reigned as one of the top women’s teams in the world during Rapinoe’s time on the roster, the decision to award her with such an honor most likely stems from Rapinoe’s relentless advocacy of liberal causes. Most recently, the USWNT vet made waves by blasting men for remaining “silent” after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade . “You’ve been silent to us, as a whole,” she said, “Stand up, say something. This is your wife, this is your sister, this is your friend, this is your girlfriend, this is the mother of your children. This is all of us. And you are allowing a violent and consistent onslaught on the autonomy of … [Read more...] about Anthem-Kneeler Megan Rapinoe to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
LOCALIZE IT: Covering July 4 in a deeply divided America
EDITORS/NEWS DIRECTORS: The holiday marking the birthday of the United States of America unfolds this year with deep divisions among its people over the weightiest of topics — abortion, guns, the events of 1/6 at the U.S. Capitol, rising gas prices and the direction of the nation in general. How to capture this and gauge your community’s sentiment as the fireworks explode and the flag paraphernalia comes out? Or just document the holiday? Here are some ideas on how to capture this unusual moment in the country’s history. STORY FORMS Short of polling, it’s generally impossible to take the pulse of a community. Instead, break it down into slices. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator — Pick a place in your coverage area — a popular park (maybe where fireworks are scheduled?), an outdoor festival, perhaps a community sports event — and use the setting as a framing device for your story. — Range around your … [Read more...] about LOCALIZE IT: Covering July 4 in a deeply divided America

Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
Halfway through the second episode of The Midwich Cuckoos I found myself wishing I didn’t have a science degree. For those unfamiliar with Sky ’s show, the source novel by John Wyndham, or one of the pair of movie adaptations, after the village of Midwich mysteriously falls asleep for a day, all the women of childbearing age suddenly find themselves to be pregnant. The resulting children have some disturbing features and abilities. They are the cuckoos of the title. The Sky adaptation seeks a female perspective to the story, which is very much in its favour. It’s mostly the men whom we see trying to deal with the problems presented by the cuckoos in the book, which is perhaps its biggest flaw given they’re not the ones who have to deal with being used as human reed warblers (a favoured cuckoo host in Britain). But modernising it clearly presented the makers with some challenges. Abortion is legal today . It wasn’t in 1957 when the book was published. And then … [Read more...] about Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?
HowTheLightGetsIn: The philosophy festival where you bump into a Nobel Prize winner in the coffee queue
Philosophy conjures up images of academics quarrelling over semantics and technicalities in university lecture halls. However, when you strip philosophy back to the basics, it is a far simpler beast. “Philosophy is the study or creation of theories about basic things such as the nature of existence, knowledge, and thought, or about how people should live,” Collins Dictionary’s definition reads. It is this definition of philosophy which Hilary Lawson, the founder of HowTheLightGetsIn , the biggest philosophy and music festival in the world, subscribes to. Lawson explains the festival is an explicit attempt to overhaul the widely-held perception that philosophy is an elitist, inaccessible, ivory tower exercise. “We want to change the notion that talking about ideas is for the elite and beyond the realms of the normal person,” Lawson tells The Independent . “In some sense, everyone is a philosopher. We are all in this strange situation of being alive - there are lots of … [Read more...] about HowTheLightGetsIn: The philosophy festival where you bump into a Nobel Prize winner in the coffee queue
Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers
On Tuesday, Representative Liz Cheney led the questioning of former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson about the former actions on January 6, 2021. But on Thursday evening, she was the one hit with a hail of questions as she faced off against four different primary challengers trying to unseat her from Wyoming’s at-large congressional district. Cheney is persona non grata in the Republican Party thanks to her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her continued criticisms of the party’s fealty to him. Her apostasy has already seen her ousted as House Republican Conference chairwoman, and has led Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to back her main challenger, Harriet Hageman. Yet despite all this, MCheney has doubled down on her critiques of the party – not least in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, in which she described what has befallen the US as a tragedy. “And the tragedy is that there are politicians in … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers
New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
