Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball
Sports Video games NBA Gamers The cramped room in Midtown Manhattan was packed wall-to-wall with YouTubers—a relentlessly cheery bunch—the lot of them excitedly live-streaming, likes and comments bobbing across their screens. It was August, and the crowd was previewing the latest product from the NBA 2K video game series—NBA 2K18, which was released Friday to those who pre-ordered—and the event was crowded with elite gamers, social media stars, 2K staffers and, pocked about the room, honest-to-God, in-the-flesh NBA players. Security stood at the front door. Booze flowed from a bar in the back. TVs pinstriped the length of the room, cutting it into even rows. That was the main attraction, with the gamers lining up, jostling through the morass of people to get their turn on the joysticks (all of this, of course, beamed over the internet to 2K devotees). In a room full of presumed NBA fans it was somewhat disorienting to see these NBA players—Brooklyn Nets guard … [Read more...] about Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball
9 of the best sports bars in Denver
Sports bars seem to come and go in Denver, but a few have become institutions. One of those was LoDo’s Blake Street Tavern, the MVP of the sports bar scene for two decades before suddenly announcing earlier in March that it would close on April 9 . And while Blake Street Tavern is the first bar that many people think about when looking for a venue to catch the game, there are plenty of other awesome spots in Denver to cheer for your favorite team or to root against your most-hated foe. March and April are particularly good times to do that as the NCAA’s Final Four is wrapping up, Major League Baseball is beginning and the NBA and the NHL are heading toward playoff season. Here are nine of our favorites: Society Sports + Spirits LoDo sports bars can sometimes be as two-dimensional as their big-screen TVs. But Society goes way beyond the bland beer and bro-ish feel with two floors worth of sporting bliss. With three enormous projectors, 28 flat-screens and four “sound zones,” … [Read more...] about 9 of the best sports bars in Denver
Jonathan Majors scrubbed from March Madness ads after actor’s arrest
The arrest of Creed III star Jonathan Majors has led to him being scrubbed from Army adverts during March Madness games. The New York Police Department said they were called to an apartment in Manhattan's Chelsea district on Saturday after receiving a 911 call from a woman involved in a domestic dispute. The actor, 33, was subsequently arrested. He appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday charged with two counts of assault in the third degree, aggravated harassment and attempted assault. He was released without bail. "The victim informed police she was assaulted," a police spokesperson said. The woman was taken to a hospital with complaints of minor head and neck injuries. Majors' lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, told Newsweek that Majors was the one to call 911 after the incident with the woman, "due to concern for her mental health." She has denied the allegations against her client. The arrest has given U.S. Army marketers a headache as Majors starred in a number of … [Read more...] about Jonathan Majors scrubbed from March Madness ads after actor’s arrest
Patrick Mahomes leads player disapproval of NFL’s “TNF” expansion
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is leading NFL players' disapproval of the league's plan to expand Thursday Night Football for the 2023 season. At the league's annual general meeting on Tuesday, among the rule changes was an agreement by all 32 team owners to allow some teams to have two Thursday night games in one season. The decision, which was revealed by NFL chief media and business officer Brian Rolapp, means that the league has agreed to an adjustment in the Thursday Night Football schedule. Rolapp pointed out that it is "certainly possible" for some teams to not have a scheduled game on Thursdays at all, once the change is implemented. On social media, players and fans have expressed concern that the expansion of Thursday Night Football could prove to be dangerous, as some players would have a shorter time to recover from a previous game. Mahomes was one of the first among the NFL players to react and shared his disapproval by posting the news on … [Read more...] about Patrick Mahomes leads player disapproval of NFL’s “TNF” expansion
Top Snowboarders to Tour Kim Jong Un’s New Ski Resort
In a move to increase visitors by 2020, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has invited three of the world's leading snowboarders to tour his country's new Masikryong ski resort in January. Terje Haakonsen, Dan Liedahl—known as "Danimals"—and Mike Ravelson will visit the resort at the summit of the 4,460-foot Taehwa Peak near Wonson, a port city on North Korea's east coast, according to a press release from Uri Tours, a New York-based company that describes itself as "facilitating travel to North Korea." Haakonsen, who notably boycotted the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics in protest at snowboarding becoming an Olympic sport, Liedahl and Ravelson will be the first snowboarders to visit the resort, which opened in 2014 and amasses almost 3,460 acres. The tour is also open to members of the public, with a single ticket (for seven nights and eight days) between January 9 and 16 costing $2,900. "This is your chance to be riding the slopes with 3 professional snowboarders in Masik Pass … [Read more...] about Top Snowboarders to Tour Kim Jong Un’s New Ski Resort
Bulls C Drummond ruled out after posting about mental health
CHICAGO (AP) — Bulls center Andre Drummond missed Chicago's game Friday night against the Los Angeles Lakers after he posted on Twitter that he was deleting his social media apps to focus on his mental health. Drummond was ruled out because of personal reasons, according to the Bulls. Coach Billy Donovan said he is hopeful about the possibility of Drummond traveling with the team ahead of Friday night's game at Charlotte. “As we come here and play games there's also a human side, a personal side to all these guys,” Donovan said, “and you feel bad when anybody's going through something like that. I think you try to give as much support as you can.” The 29-year-old Drummond is in his first year with Chicago and his 11th season in the NBA overall. The two-time All-Star posted on Tuesday that he was deleting his apps and changing his number. “Time to focus on my mental health,” Drummond wrote. “If you too are struggling with your mental health, you are not alone ... it’s okay … [Read more...] about Bulls C Drummond ruled out after posting about mental health
Jonas Vingegaard Wins Tour de France, Completing His Sudden Ascent to Top
PARIS — Head down and legs churning, Jonas Vingegaard crossed the finish line of the penultimate stage of the Tour de France on Saturday and cupped his hand over his mouth, as if to stifle a gasp. He had done what he had come to do, and his astonishing accomplishment was sinking in. In only his second Tour de France, and only three years after becoming a professional cyclist, Vingegaard, a 25-year-old Danish rider, had sealed his victory in cycling’s most prestigious race. His victory became official on Sunday, when the race concluded with its traditional celebratory ride into Paris. But the Tour had been effectively over for days, and when Vingegaard finished second in Saturday’s time trial to his Jumbo-Visma teammate, Wout van Aert of Belgium, his effort on the 25-mile course was enough to leave him with such a large lead in the overall standings — 3 minutes 34 seconds ahead of his closest pursuer — that the final stage brought almost no drama at all. Vingegaard steered clear … [Read more...] about Jonas Vingegaard Wins Tour de France, Completing His Sudden Ascent to Top
