Valerie Strauss, The Washington Post Published 6:34 pm PST, Thursday, January 10, 2019 The American Federation of Teachers has started an interest-free loan program for thousands of members affected by the partial shutdown of the federal government. The AFT represents not only teachers but also other government employees, including corrections officers, firefighters, engineers and budget analysts who work in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other tribal agencies. Must movie captioning include song lyrics? Defendant studios cite free speech in civil rights case

· January 21, 2016 ·

After 25 years of legislation and litigation, those who are hearing-impaired have an option to purchase and rent movies with captioning. However, song lyrics, which can be an integral part of the story, may not be included, says a civil rights suit filed against a number of major Hollywood studios.“While the dialogue of some movies or shows are [sic] indeed fully subtitled, the practice of not subtitling song/music lyrics is frustratingly widespread,” allege plaintiffs in the California case, who are members of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.Originally filed in state court in October, the litigation was removed to federal court by the defendants, which include Disney and Warner Brothers, the Hollywood Reporter’s THR, Esq. reports. The plaintiffs say studio claims about movie captioning constitute false advertising and breach of an implied warranty when songs aren’t captioned, too.But in motions to dismiss, the defendants … [Read more...] about Must movie captioning include song lyrics? Ex-Im Bank is Closed for Business – At Least for Now

· July 1, 2015 ·

The U.S. Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank closed its doors on Tuesday following a lapse in Congressional authority. The 81-year-old agency provided financing for both American companies that export goods and their foreign customers, helping to secure American exporters’ access to emerging markets. But following a push by conservative Republicans who claimed the Ex-Im Bank was a form of corporate welfare, Congress declined to extend the Bank’s charter before recessing for the Fourth of July holiday. Absent congressional action, the Ex-Im Bank is now unable to authorize new loans, insurance, or guarantees, effectively freezing new projects.American businesses that rely on the Ex-Im Bank are concerned that, without access to the capital the Ex-Im Bank provides, they will not be able to take on large-scale projects abroad, resulting in a substantial loss of jobs here in the United States. The Ex-Im Bank often operates as a lender of last resort, taking on loans typically considered … [Read more...] about Ex-Im Bank is Closed for Business – At Least for Now

· June 16, 2018 ·

Siobhán O'Grady, The Washington Post Published 3:51 pm, Saturday, June 16, 2018 Rap lyrics are sometimes controversial: References to sex and violence, along with the fluid use of profanity, offend some. But German rappers Kollegah and Farid Bang took offensive to a level leading to criminal investigation. Ahead of Germany's biggest music awards ceremony in April, the pair were nominated for two awards. But controversy emerged over lyrics from the duo's newest record, "Jung, Brutal, Gutaussehend 3," (Young, brutal, good-looking 3). The album included references to the Holocaust, saying their bodies are "more defined than those of Auschwitz inmates," and that they will "make another Holocaust." A number of people filed complaints to the police over the lyrics, saying they violated German laws concerning hate speech and anti-Semitism. But on Saturday, the Düsseldorf prosecutor's office issued a statement saying the lyrics were "neither an endorsement nor a … [Read more...] about Germany drops probe of rappers, after they used Holocaust and Auschwitz in lyrics
