Lausanne: A Swiss court on Tuesday scheduled a September trial date for Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and FIFA's former secretary general Jerome Valcke, in an alleged corruption case. The case, involving the pair and a third, unnamed man, relates to alleged criminal mismanagement, incitement to criminal mismanagement, falsifying documents and corruption, the Federal Criminal Court said on its website. The court is based in the southeastern Swiss city of Bellinzona. When filing the indictment in February, the office of Switzerland's attorney general (OAG) said the men faced charges linked "with the award of media rights to various World Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup tournaments." After the date was set on Tuesday, Al-Khelaifi's lawyers issued a statement insisting the case was "completely unfounded", and said the allegation against their client was "manifestly artificial." They also indicated that they had requested the recusal of the prosecutors in the … [Read more...] about Swiss Court Trial Date Set for PSG President and Ex-FIFA Secretary General in Corruption Case

How to Stop Dating People Who Are Wrong for You
“ How to Build a Life ” is a weekly column by Arthur Brooks, tackling questions of meaning and happiness. Click here to listen to his podcast series on all things happiness, How to Build a Happy Life . S ingle people often lament that finding someone to date is hard. According to data from the Pew Research Center, 75 percent of daters say so. And when they fail to find the right person, too many people end up dating the wrong one. Some complain that they are suffering “ Groundhog Day Syndrome ” in dating: following the same failed pattern, over and over, because the people they are attracted to are not good mates—prospects who, for example, are already in a relationship, have unmanaged addictions, or are abusive. The problem of being attracted to the wrong person is a staple of art and literature. Take Gatsby and Daisy , or Siegmund and Sieglinde in Richard Wagner’s opera Die Walküre . (In the latter, the heroine falls in love with her twin brother, who … [Read more...] about How to Stop Dating People Who Are Wrong for You
Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
L egend says the diver drowned retrieving the pearl. Trapped in a giant Tridacna clam, his body was brought to the surface by his fellow tribesmen in Palawan, a province of the Philippines, in May 1934. When the clam was pried open, and the meat scraped out, the local chief beheld something marvelous: a massive pearl, its sheen like satin. In its surface, the chief discerned the face of the Prophet Muhammad. He named it the Pearl of Allah. At 14 pounds, one ounce, it was the largest pearl ever discovered. In a 1939 article that appeared in Natural History magazine, he recounted the chief’s refusal to sell: “A pearl with the image of Mohammed, the Prophet of Allah, is earned by devotion, by sacrifice, not bought with money.” But when the chief’s son fell ill with malaria, Cobb used … [Read more...] about Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
No One Does a Comeback Like J. Lo
Jennifer Lopez has lived more lives than most celebrities. She’s been a dancer and a movie star and a pop singer and an entrepreneur and a reality-TV mainstay and part of the reason for the existence of Google Images . She’s been box-office gold and box-office poison. She’s considered one of the most influential Latina celebrities in America, both revered and denigrated—though not always in equal measure . Consider it a minor miracle, then, that Halftime , the Netflix documentary about Lopez’s career, has room to trace more than 30 years of fame as well as follow her in the months leading up to her performance at the 2020 Super Bowl. Like other celebrity-endorsed portraits , Halftime feels both candid and safe. The director Amanda Micheli’s interviewees include only Lopez and members of her team—her parents, her manager, and, yes, Ben Affleck—and the behind-the-scenes footage comes across as familiar. Yet Halftime isn’t entirely a hagiography. After the … [Read more...] about No One Does a Comeback Like J. Lo
How New DRDO Drug 2-DG Works On Human Cells And Fights Covid-19
A new drug by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has recently been approved for emergency use on Covid-19 patients by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). Developed by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), a lab of DRDO, in collaboration with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad, this new drug called 2-DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose) helps Covid-19 patients recover faster and also reduces their dependence on medical oxygen (MO). It is not a repurposed drug, and the way it has been manufactured is also unique. Reports claim that this drug selectively accumulates in infected cells and cuts off the energy supply to the virus. Therefore, the virus cannot multiply automatically, which helps in reducing the infection and the viral load gradually. Eventually, the cells recover. The phase one and phase two trial results, based on which the emergency use authorisation has been granted by DCGI, obviously show a lot of promise. However, once the … [Read more...] about How New DRDO Drug 2-DG Works On Human Cells And Fights Covid-19

Death by Plastic: Climate Activist Builds Funeral Pyres Out of Bottles to Highlight Pollution
Do you think twice before tossing a disposable water bottle you bought at a tourist spot? If you’re one of the better ones, you’ll look for the nearest bin instead of littering, but disposing the bottle itself adds to a much larger problem: Single-use plastics. Indians on an average generate almost 26 kgs of single-use plastic in a year. 26 kgs which are usually not recycled, get broken down into microplastics and ultimately find their way to our food chain. Basing his newest art installation on these 26 kgs, climate change activist Aakash Ranison, who went viral last year for his marine cemetary in Kerala, has come up with the idea for his latest exhibition. “The only way to make people realize the consequences of their actions is holding a mirror up to them” says Ranison in an interview with News18. After Marine Cemetary , the new exhibition focuses on the eventual outcome of plastic pollution: Death. In Rishikesh, which attracted over 6 lakh tourists in 2018 … [Read more...] about Death by Plastic: Climate Activist Builds Funeral Pyres Out of Bottles to Highlight Pollution

Adobe Introduces Curves and Apple Pencil Improvements to Photoshop on iPad
Adobe has introduced two of its core features curves and brush sensitivity by adjusting the pressure sensitivity of Apple Pencil in Photoshop on iPad. Curves enable users to make specific adjustments to the colour and tone of the image (like contrast, exposure, saturation, highlights, shadows and colour balance) in a non-destructive way. "The first version includes adjustments of tonal curves for all channels, multi-node selections, and some great new affordances to enable the app to recognize when you want to tap and drag a node with your finger or pencil or select it," said software major Adobe. Users can now adjust the pressure sensitivity of Apple Pencil for more precise brushing, cloning, and other effects when using brush-based tools. "At the lightest end of the range you get greater pressure values applied with less force, while the highest end of the range gives you greater force to achieve maximum pressure," explained Adobe. Photoshop on the iPad allows users to craft … [Read more...] about Adobe Introduces Curves and Apple Pencil Improvements to Photoshop on iPad
Asian Games Postponement: What it Means for India and its Athletes
For someone like shuttler Saina Nehwal, it could well serve as a fresh lifeline but for star tennis player Sania Mirza and archer Tarundeep Rai the last opportunity to represent India at a multi-disciplinary big-ticket event seem to have slipped away with the postponement of the Hangzhou Asian Games. How does postponement affect athletes individually? Saina, who is ranked outside top-15 in the world, had skipped the national selection trials for the CWG and the Asiad since she did not want to put her body to rigours of more games between international tournaments. Now the gap between the CWG and Asiad, whenever the new dates are announced, could allow her to force her way back into the Indian team and earn another shot at winning an Asian Games medal, provided the national federation considers her form near the Games. Sania, who is 35, has already announced that 2022 will be her last season. The most successful Indian woman tennis player now will have to make a fresh … [Read more...] about Asian Games Postponement: What it Means for India and its Athletes
