What was silly business for The Three Stooges, who made a career out of squirting seltzer bottles, is all business for Alex Gomberg. He's a fourth-generation seltzer man, working at the Brooklyn-based company started by his great-grandfather, Moe. You could say seltzer is in his blood. Correspondent Serena Altschul asked, "What's really changed since your great-grandfather was doing this?" "As far as the process? Nothing," Gomberg replied. Each vintage bottle is filled with just two things: New York City tap water, chilled to 42°, and a charge of carbon dioxide. Gomberg doesn't just make the stuff; he delivers it. And what's crystal clear is, across America, this pressurized mix is having a moment. But is it seltzer or sparkling water? Melanie Hansche, an editor at Food and Wine Magazine, said, "I think they're all variations on a theme. And I think ultimately, it's just all bubbly water. Popular sparkling water company LaCroix is facing a lawsuit that alleges its products are mislabeled as "all-natural," and the allegations are weighing on the shares of its parent company National Beverage. The lawsuit, filed in a Cook County, Illinois, circuit court, claims that LaCroix contains ethyl butanoate, limonene, linalool and linalool propionate — ingredients it says are non-natural and synthetic compounds. Linalool is an aromatic oil often found in cockroach insecticide, and many of the reports about the suit have touted this fact. The suit also says limonene is known to cause kidney toxicity and tumors, while linalool propionate is used to treat cancer. However, a report in Popular Science raises doubts about the claims that the chemicals technically qualify as synthetic or dangerous. The report says limonene is a "naturally occurring chemical" and a "major component of oil extracted from citrus peels." It is commonly used to give food a lemony flavor and fragrance, … [Read more...] about LaCroix Faces Suit Alleging It Mislabeled Its Sparkling Water as Natural
Good news: Sparkling water (including the flavored kind), which often helps with the taste fatigue some people experience with plain water, is just as hydrating as non-carbonated water. If that's all you needed to know, you can stop reading.
