Meet 7YO ‘Mariachi Mateo’, the world’s youngest mariachi musician
Mateo Lopez tugged at the collar of his shirt and wrenched his neck, as if to free his voice. Then, as violins slashed behind him and guitars rippled before him in a rehearsal room at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, he belted out La Noche y Tu , concluding with a flourish that prompted shouts of “Eso! Eso!” (Right on!) Like many mariachi musicians, Mateo treasures his Mexican heritage and loves singing songs about romance, a mother’s love, pleas for forgiveness and life and death in the countryside. But because Mateo is only seven, he also likes throwing baseballs or seeing how fast he can run from one end of a hallway to the other. The bilingual second grader has been performing since he was four years and 236 days old, a mark that earned him recognition as the world’s youngest mariachi by Guinness World Records. Mateo’s star took off after a video went viral of him singing at a Mexican restaurant in late 2018. Selva Suriya, a Thevar boy studying in Class 12, was allegedly attacked by a teenager belonging to the Arundhathiyar community along with two Muslim boys of Class 11. While the Thevars are a socially and politically dominant Other Backward Classes community, the Arundhathiyars are among the most disadvantaged within the SCs spread across western and southern Tamil Nadu. Selva Suriya, who had suffered a serious … [Read more...] about In Tamil Nadu, assertion of caste identity has peace hanging by a thread, even in schools
Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu

Trapped in a giant Tridacna clam, his body was brought to the surface by his fellow tribesmen in Palawan, a province of the Philippines, in May 1934. When the clam was pried open, and the meat scraped out, the local chief beheld something marvelous: a massive pearl, its sheen like satin. In its surface, the chief discerned the face of the Prophet Muhammad. He named it the Pearl of Allah. At 14 pounds, one ounce, it was the largest pearl ever discovered. In a 1939 article that appeared in Natural History magazine, he recounted the chief’s refusal to sell: “A pearl with the image of Mohammed, the Prophet of Allah, is earned by devotion, by sacrifice, not bought with money.” But when the chief’s son fell ill with malaria, Cobb used … [Read more...] about Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
