At the end of another dirt road sits Black Mesa Community School, where principal Marie Rose does her best to deliver an education to the 63 students despite the vagaries of the roads. While occasional snow days are familiar anywhere, the challenge for Black Mesa comes when melting snow turns dirt roads to mud. On a good day the school bus ride is two hours each way for some children. One family lives 80 miles away, but the route becomes 140 miles when a wash floods a road a few times a year. Students can end up missing two weeks of school over January and February because of the roads, leaving only March uninterrupted to prepare for the standardized tests of April. To pass the time on a bus marooned in the mud, the children will watch movies on the bus driver’s phone or sing a traditional Navajo peyote song. “A human rights abuse is what it is,” Rose told me. “The kids have a right to an education, but we don’t give them 100 percent because of the road … [Read more...] about What do Native Americans want from a president?
Some men just want to watch the world burn
"It's absolutely destroyed me as a person. I struggle to walk to the toilet and my penis has no use other than to try and urinate from it. It has no feeling,” he said. “The cancer is busy eating away around it so I will probably lose it altogether soon. But I'm a solider. I've got my kids to think about and I can't be selfish and give up.” … [Read more...] about Man With Cancer Who May Lose Penis, Prepares For Las Vegas Wedding
Harel also called in the Editors Committee, a unique Israeli institution, then composed of the top editors of the media, that self-censored items at the request of the government. He asked the committee to provide him with three journalists, whom he subsequently recruited. They were sent to Europe, at the Mossad’s expense, to gather intelligence about the front companies that were buying equipment for the Egyptian project. Harel claimed he needed the journalists for operational reasons, but he wanted to use their involvement and the materials they collected to launder information he already possessed; as such, it could be disseminated to the foreign and Israeli media to manufacture newspaper reports and create a climate suited to his purposes. Harel’s stories generated a media frenzy and a growing sense of panic in Israel. Ben-Gurion tried to calm him down, to no avail. “He [Harel] was not, in my opinion, quite sane,” said Amos Manor, the Shin Bet chief at the … [Read more...] about The Secret History of Israel’s War Against Hitler’s Scientists
Since 2009, xenophobic political parties and politicians have become more vocal and influential. Brexit has further befouled the atmosphere. Not all those who voted to leave the European Union were racist, but it’s likely all racists who voted chose Brexit. And they remain agitated. According to the National Police Chiefs Council, hate crime went up 49 percent after the referendum. Brexiters interviewed for this article were furious that dark-skinned people and Eastern Europeans are still living in Great Britain. A retired zoo worker tells me, “We want our country back. Ham and spam, and you lot gone. You are married to that English chap but will never be one of us. I am not racist. Each to their own. I don’t want Pakis like you in my country.” … [Read more...] about Meghan Markle And Prince Harry: Can the Royal Wedding Change Centuries of Racism and Classism in Britain?
These fears have taken on a new urgency. In January, President Donald Trump cut off funds to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which aids and represents Palestinian refugees in the Middle East. A month before, he had announced that the U.S. Embassy would move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, a clear message that his administration was officially and unequivocally siding with Israel. Jerusalem includes sites sacred to Muslims as well as Jews and Christians, and Palestinians have claimed East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state—borders laid out in 1993’s Oslo Accord or Arab-Israeli Peace Process, which established Palestinian self-rule in the Gaza Strip and Jordan. After decades of U.S.-led Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, Trump’s decision undercuts America’s credibility as a neutral party, deflating further hope of a peace treaty. Complicating matters further: Twelve years into what is nominally a four-year term, PA President … [Read more...] about Middle East Peace?
