His statement translates into an unequivocal opposition to the Yoon Suk-yeol administration’s attempt to reign in the police, which will become more powerful when they take away all investigative powers from the prosecution in September. The police chief made the announcement about one hour after Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, who commands the police, presented a plan to create a bureau inside the ministry to efficiently control the police. But Kim’s argument is not convincing. After the passage in April of the revisions of the laws by the Democratic Party (DP), the police can wield enormous power extending to investigations on communist activities and crimes of soldiers before enlistment. About the recommendations by the advisory board, Interior Minister Lee said they are just a part of an effort to “normalize the aberrant ways of the Blue House directly commanding the police by bypassing the ministry” in the past. First of all, it is not a responsible … [Read more...] about Police chief’s suspicious announcement to resign

MHADA Denies Responsibility, Says Collapsed Building was Unauthorised Construction
Mumbai: The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) claimed Tuesday evening that the four-storey building in south Mumbai's Dongri area which collapsed earlier in the day was unauthorised. 13 persons have died in the collapse with rescue efforts still underway. "MHADA's repair and reconstruction board clarifies that its cessed property 25/C Kesarbai building is not the one that collapsed this morning," it said in a statement. "In fact, an unauthorised construction erected behind that building is the one that crashed," said Vaishali Gadpale, chief PRO, MHADA. The residents of the Kesarbai -- some officials had given its name as Kesarbaug -- building had vacated it in 2018 as it had become dilapidated, MHADA sources said. MHADA looks after the maintenance of several old and dilapidated private buildings in the city. Such buildings are termed as "cessed" as its residents pay tax to MHADA. Earlier, locals had said the building that collapsed was a cessed building … [Read more...] about MHADA Denies Responsibility, Says Collapsed Building was Unauthorised Construction
With Sangrur bypoll win, Simranjit Singh Mann makes a comeback
Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had a major setback on Sunday as it lost the parliamentary byelection to the Sangrur constituency, so far a party bastion. Simranjit Singh Mann, a known radical Sikh leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat by securing 2,53,154 votes. He defeated his nearest rival of the AAP, Gurmail Singh, by 5,822 votes. Mr. Singh secured 2,47,332 votes. The byelection is being seen as the first major test to ascertain the popularity of the three-month-old AAP government, which went into the Assembly polls earlier this year on the plank of its development work, and stern action against corruption, illegal mining and other “mafias” in the State. Losing Sangrur is being seen as a big blow against the party, especially for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, as the constituency is his home turf. The byelection was necessitated as the seat fell vacant after Mr. Mann contested and won from the Dhuri Assembly seat in the Assembly … [Read more...] about With Sangrur bypoll win, Simranjit Singh Mann makes a comeback
