As more and more young men find themselves behind bars with the Assam government continuing its crackdown on child marriage, their wives are running from pillar to post to find documents to prove they were not underage at the time of wedlock. Many affected families also claimed that identity documents with “erroneous” birth dates of women were cited by police for registering cases. A total of 2,241 arrests have been made so far in the state, based on 4,074 FIRs, as part of the crackdown launched four days ago. An elderly resident of Bhuragaon in Morigaon district claimed that most of the child marriage cases were registered on the basis of data collected from local health workers, who keep track of pregnant women, lactating mothers and families with small children to ensure coverage of government schemes. “These health workers use Aadhaar card information, as this is the latest document in possession of the villagers. However, errors related to birth dates have been spotted in … [Read more...] about Assam: Families Point to ‘Erroneous’ Data in ID Cards Behind Child Marriage Arrests

Assam Child Marriage Crackdown: Teen Kills Self Fearing Arrest Before Wedding
A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Assam, fearing the arrest of her family members under the state government’s crackdown against child marriages. According to Hindustan Times , the girl was to marry an older man soon, but allegedly killed herself fearing the police crackdown. The incident took place in Assam’s Cachar district. Local police officials have however dismissed the claims made by the family and argue that there could be several other reasons for the teenage girl’s decision to end her life. Superintendent of police (SP), Cachar, Numal Mahatta told HT , prima facie it is a case of suicide, but the actual cause of death will be revealed once the postmortem report comes. “The girl must have had some issues with her family. Her death is not at all related to the crackdown on child marriage,” the SP said. Local media reports suggest that the girl was keen on marrying the man she loved. Her family had agreed to the wedding before the Assam government’s … [Read more...] about Assam Child Marriage Crackdown: Teen Kills Self Fearing Arrest Before Wedding
Supreme Court issues notice on NCPCR plea challenging Punjab And Haryana HC Allowing Marriage of Minor Muslim Girl
The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice in an appeal filed by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) challenging a recent ruling of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which held that a Muslim girl can enter a valid marriage once she attains puberty. Since the case was called out after 4 pm, due to paucity of time, SFG Tushar Mehta informed the CJI DY Chandrachud-led bench that the matter required a proper hearing. On this, the bench also consisting of Justices Pardiwala and PS Narasimha ordered that the matter be kept for March on a non-miscellaneous day. “Issue Notice, make it returnable in March. Keep it on a non-miscellaneous day," said the bench. In October last year, a division bench of Justices SK Kaul and AS Oka had agreed to consider whether a Muslim girl can enter into a valid marriage once she attains the age of puberty. Granting protection to a 16-year-old Muslim girl who married a 21-year-old Muslim man against her family’s wishes, … [Read more...] about Supreme Court issues notice on NCPCR plea challenging Punjab And Haryana HC Allowing Marriage of Minor Muslim Girl

The Road to a Supreme Court Clerkship Starts at Three Ivy League Colleges
WASHINGTON — When Ted Cruz attended Harvard Law School, he liked to study with people who had undergraduate degrees from Harvard, Yale or Princeton. “He said he didn’t want anybody from ‘minor Ivies’ like Penn or Brown,” one of his law school roommates told GQ . That may strike you as slicing the baloney of elitism awfully thin. But a new study has found that Supreme Court justices do much the same thing in selecting their law clerks. It is not news that the justices favor a handful of law schools in doling out clerkships, a glittering credential that all but guarantees success in a profession obsessed with status markers. But the study adds another factor: To get a clerkship, it really helps to have gone to college at Harvard, Yale or Princeton. Albert Yoon , a law professor at the University of Toronto and one of the study’s authors, said the finding was disturbing. “We don’t really live in a meritocracy,” he said. “The Supreme Court is guilty of perpetuating … [Read more...] about The Road to a Supreme Court Clerkship Starts at Three Ivy League Colleges

Column: Here’s why Joe Biden won’t be dumping Kamala Harris as his running mate
Being vice president of the United States is sort of like working for Donald Trump or watching reality TV. It requires a high degree of tolerance for indignity and abuse. The job is inherently subservient — the only thing worse than embarrassing the president is outshining him — and the office almost always diminishes its occupant . Enter as a respected governor or U.S. senator and soon you’re transformed in the public eye to a lapdog, a nullity or an anchor on the administration. (A notable exception being Dick Cheney, who, in caricature, was portrayed as the puppeteer and power behind a feckless President George W. Bush.) Advertisement Kamala Harris, California’s former U.S. senator and attorney general, is just the latest to experience the enervating effect of the vice presidency, alternating between periods of mockery and being largely ignored. Now it’s her turn to suffer another humiliating rite: speculation on whether Harris will be booted from the … [Read more...] about Column: Here’s why Joe Biden won’t be dumping Kamala Harris as his running mate

But there are trainees that get kicked out because they date." Many singers meet in waiting rooms for television music programs or entertainment shows, according to Jin. Turkey Earthquake Worse Than ‘Years of War’, Say Survivors as Syria Hospitals Rush to Save Lives
At a hospital in Syria, Osama Abdel Hamid was holding back tears as he recalled on Monday the powerful earthquake that toppled his home and killed his neighbours, along with hundreds of his compatriots. “We were fast asleep when we felt a huge earthquake," Abdel Hamid told AFP at Al-Rahma hospital in the northwestern Idlib province, where he was being treated for a head injury. The 7.8-magnitude pre-dawn quake, whose epicentre was near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, wiped out entire sections of cities in Turkey and war-ravaged Syria. Officials have put the combined death toll at more than 1,900. When it shook the Abdel Hamid family’s home in the village of Azmarin, near Syria’s border with Turkey, “I woke up my wife and children and we ran towards the exit door," the man said. “We opened the door, and suddenly the entire building collapsed." Within moments, Abdel Hamid found himself under the rubble of the four-storey building. All of his neighbours died, but the family … [Read more...] about Turkey Earthquake Worse Than ‘Years of War’, Say Survivors as Syria Hospitals Rush to Save Lives
