Naomi Osaka’s U.S. Open preparations suffered another setback when the former world number one was swept aside 6-4 7-5 by China’s Zhang Shuai in the Cincinnati Open first round on Tuesday. It was only her third tournament back from an Achilles injury and it has been a stuttering return to action for the twice U.S. Open champion, who also exited in the opening round in Toronto last week, retiring with lower back pain. For Zhang, doubles champion in Cincinnati last year, it was her first singles win at the event since 2014.”Naomi she is amazing but I don’t know she is maybe not really feeling good today,” said Zhang. “But for sure today – not her best today.”The first match on Centre Court, Japan’s Osaka got the contest off to a sluggish start by double-faulting to gift Zhang a break on her opening serve. That was all the help Zhang needed as she went on to take the first set with the 33-year-old Chinese player then quickly gaining the upper hand in the second with an early break to … [Read more...] about Naomi Osaka’s Troubles Continue With a First-Round Loss in Cincinnati

U.S. Home Sales Drop for Sixth Straight Month as Housing Recession Rolls On
Sales of existing homes in the United States fell by more than expected in July as high borrowing costs, fading demand, and tight inventories weighed down the housing market. Sales of previously owned homes fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.81 million, a 5.9 percent decline from the prior month, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday. The June figure was revised down to a 5.11 million rate from 5.12 million. Compared with a year ago, sales are down 20.2 percent. “The ongoing sales decline reflects the impact of the mortgage rate peak of 6% in early June,” said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “Home sales may soon stabilize since mortgage rates have fallen to near 5%, thereby giving an additional boost of purchasing power to home buyers.” This was the slowest pace of sales since May of 2020, when much of the economy was shuttered and concerns over infection were extremely high. Excluding the pandemic-related decline, this was the slowest pace of sales … [Read more...] about U.S. Home Sales Drop for Sixth Straight Month as Housing Recession Rolls On
Ryan Mountcastle’s improvements at first base helping fuel Orioles’ defensive turnaround: ‘He’s a huge asset’
For as much pregame defensive work as Ryan Mountcastle gets at first base, Orioles infield coach Tony Mansolino recognizes there’s one area of the game the young slugger receives no preparation for whatsoever. Baltimore’s coaching staff lacks a left-handed hitter, so even as Mountcastle fields groundballs almost daily to improve at his relatively new position, the spin he sees off fungo bats is exclusively that which comes off a right-hander’s bat. Mansolino wants to find a way to change that. “We joke about it, that I’m going to learn how to switch-hit next spring,” Mansolino said. “But I probably am.” Mountcastle’s troubles with the occasional grounder from a left-hander represent the most apparent deficiency in a defensive game that Mansolino said has “significantly” improved from last year to now. That effect has trickled to the Orioles’ infield defense, which ranked as one of baseball’s worst in 2021 but is now in the middle of the league. “In the major leagues, … [Read more...] about Ryan Mountcastle’s improvements at first base helping fuel Orioles’ defensive turnaround: ‘He’s a huge asset’
Data opportunity at the G20
The global politics of data is rapidly evolving as leading and emerging digital economies like the European Union (EU), the U.S., India, Indonesia, and South Africa strive to protect, monetise, and leverage data collected within their territories for domestic purposes. The age of borderless data with limited or no government control, once an aspiration, appears behind us. Increasing privacy and security concerns coupled with economic interests have compelled governments to institute rules and standards that govern and restrict cross-border flows with natural implications for negotiations on global trade and commerce. Indeed, the sheer amount of data being generated and shared globally has necessitated governments to exert more control over the use, sharing, and cross-border flow of data. According to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), data localisation laws have more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, indicating that states seek and want increasing levels of … [Read more...] about Data opportunity at the G20
Federal Judges Expand Disability Law to Enforce Transgender Demands
A three-judge federal panel has declared people who say they are members of the opposite sex can use a 1990 disability law to enforce their demands on other people and groups. “We have little trouble concluding that a law excluding from ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990] protection both ‘gender identity disorders’ and gender dysphoria would [unconstituionally] discriminate against transgender people as a class,” said the opinion by Judge Diana Gribbon Motz, who was nominated by President Bill Clinton. The 2:1 decision by the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit may be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the case survives, it will be used by advocacy groups to push the transgender ideology on state and local government, schools, companies, and civic groups. The ideology insists that each person’s male-or-female sex is determined by their inner feelings of “gender identity,” regardless of other people’s recognition of their male or female body. That demand … [Read more...] about Federal Judges Expand Disability Law to Enforce Transgender Demands

FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Trump’s Money Man Allen Weisselberg Pleads Guilty
The Manhattan District Attorney’s attempts to flip former President Donald Trump’s loyal money man have officially failed, as the tax-dodging ex-chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg took a plea deal Thursday morning and won’t testify against his lifelong boss. Instead, he’ll get what some might consider a sweetheart deal for a 75-year-old man who kept his lips shut and wouldn’t implicate his old boss: six months or less behind bars. His legal team expects him to realistically spend three months in prison, and he will face five years of probation after serving his sentence. He will also have to pay back $1,994,321 in taxes he owed, prosecutors said in court. In return, Weisselberg has also agreed to openly testify about the way the Trump Organization rewarded him with untaxed corporate perks for years in the form of expensive tuition payments for his grandkids at a top-tier Manhattan private school, a luxury car to use anytime he wished, and a fully-paid swanky apartment … [Read more...] about Trump’s Money Man Allen Weisselberg Pleads Guilty

Netflix Will Not Allow This Feature For Users With Its Ad-Tier Plan: All Details
Netflix is bringing its new ad-tier plan to the market very soon, but as the day passes, we are getting new details about this upcoming plan that may not appeal to many users. The latest update suggests Netflix will not allow users to download content and watch them offline with the ad-tier plan. Downloads are a big part of the streaming platforms, and most of them charging for their service allows offline viewing. But it seems Netflix has other ideas, and not only does it plan to charge consumers for its ad-tier plan (albeit lower than its current rates) but also restrict some features for its users. All these details were discovered in the Netflix iPhone code by a developer named Steve Moser. He also found traces of Netflix not allowing you to skip ads or let you use the service while the ad is running. The video streaming platform faces heavy competition from the likes of Hulu, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video among others. However, Netflix has been facing lower … [Read more...] about Netflix Will Not Allow This Feature For Users With Its Ad-Tier Plan: All Details
