Lake Mead is at risk of "catastrophic collapse" if nothing is done to reduce water use at the manmade reservoir that straddles the Arizona/Nevada border, U.S. government officials have warned. Water levels are forecast to drop further before the end of August and measures have been unveiled to minimize damage to the ecosystem and the strain on local communities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lake Mead's water is 1,042.38 feet above sea level, as of August 16. The USBR predicts the water level will drop to 1,042.35 feet before September. Longer-term USBR forecasts suggest the water level will decline to 1,019 feet by August 2023 and 1,013 feet in July 2024. The USBR is asking people to use as little water as possible and has announced that the reservoir—the largest in the U.S.—will operate under its first Level 2a Shortage Condition in 2023. This means downstream releases from the Hoover Dam will be reduced in 2023 to Arizona, Nevada and Mexico. North Korea Celebrates Alleged End of Coronavirus Pandemic with Communist Posters
The communist regime ruling North Korea declared victory against the Chinese coronavirus pandemic this week after only three months of having admitted to any coronavirus cases within its borders, publishing commemorative posters in its classic communist propaganda style. The North Korean dictatorship first admitted to having confirmed cases of Chinese coronavirus within its borders in May, two years after the disease had spread to nearly every country on the planet. It was one of the last countries to officially document coronavirus cases despite sharing borders with the country where the virus originated, China, as well as Russia and South Korea, which have both endured severe outbreaks of the disease. The official newspaper of the communist Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), Rodong Sinmun , and the government’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced the creation and distribution of posters on Wednesday to officially mark the end of the epidemic in the country. The posters … [Read more...] about North Korea Celebrates Alleged End of Coronavirus Pandemic with Communist Posters

Teachers face a harsh lesson as inflation drives up the cost of everything from paper to pencils before the school year begins, leading some to cut back on supplies - or substitute with cheaper items. "If you ask any teacher, Ticonderoga pencils are it," said Kristina Eisenhower, 35, an instructional facilitator. Yet a 12-pack of that popular brand costs $3.99, up nearly 25% from a year ago, on Amazon.com Inc . In parts of Arkansas, where Eisenhower works, teachers' annual $500 stipend for classroom materials has not increased in 15 years. "They're buying cheaper pencils, cheaper supplies, which in reality are not going to last as long as the name-brand supplies they've bought in the past," she said. THE INFLATION REDUCTION ACT WILL RAMP UP … [Read more...] about Teachers pay the price as inflation drives up school supply prices
UK hosepipe bans mapped: Where are they, what are the rules and how long will they last?
The UK has seen soaring temperatures this summer and after more hot weather earlier this month droughts were declared in eight areas in England . Much of the UK has seen the driest July since 1935 and many reservoirs have been badly affected. The hot weather is now coming to an end as the Met Office have issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain across the UK this week. But despite the end to the dry weather, this isn't expected to be enough to replenish the country's low water supplies. FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’
You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
Nothing gets a female mosquito going quite like the stench of human BO . The chase can begin from more than 100 feet away , with a plume of breath that wafts carbon dioxide onto the nubby sensory organ atop the insect’s mouth. Her senses snared, she flies person-ward, until her antennae start to buzz with the pungent perfume of skin. Lured closer still, she homes in on her host’s body heat, then touches down on a landing pad of flesh that she can taste with her legs . She punctures her victim with her spear-like stylet and slurps the iron-rich blood within. The entire ritual is intricate and obsessive—and nearly impossible to disrupt. Of more than 3,500 mosquito species that skulk about the planet, fewer than 10 percent (and only the females, at that) enjoy nibbling on humans. But once they’re on the prowl for people, neither rain nor zappers nor citronella candles will deter them. From the tips of their antennae to the bottoms of their little insect feet, these … [Read more...] about You Have No Idea How Good Mosquitoes Are at Smelling Us
How search-and-rescue crews found the missing Thai boys soccer team
Nine days. That's how long 12 boys and their soccer coach were missing, believed to be trapped in a flooded cave in northern Thailand, presumably stuck without food or drinking water or much by way of survival gear, and almost certainly scared for their lives. First boys emerge from Thailand cave as rescue mission enters final act
CHIANG RAI, Thailand — Rescuers in northern Thailand on Sunday extracted four members of a youth soccer team from the cave where they had been trapped for more than two weeks, signaling the final act of a saga that has gripped the world. Three of the boys were taken to a hospital by helicopter while the fourth was taken by an ambulance, Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osottanakorn said at a news conference Sunday night local time. "We were faster than expected, more successful than I expected, and everyone is happy," he said. As efforts ended for the night, the rescue operation chief said they would resume in 10 to 20 hours because workers "used all the oxygen" and needed to reset their air tanks. Based on that timeframe, rescue operations were set to resume at around 7 a.m. Monday (8 p.m. ET Sunday), but when that time arrived it was not clear if the effort had resumed. Members of the audience broke out in applause when the rescue was announced. The boys traveled more than … [Read more...] about First boys emerge from Thailand cave as rescue mission enters final act

Thai diver dies amid cave rescue of trapped soccer team
CHIANG RAI, Thailand — The death of a former Thai navy SEAL early Friday during the rescue operation to save a boys' soccer team trapped in a flooded cave was the latest setback for a mission fraught with danger as officials raced against worsening weather. A fellow diver tried to revive him but was unsuccessful. "The conditions in the cave are tough," Adm. Apakorn Yuukongkaew, commander of the SEALs unit, told reporters on Friday. "Once he placed the oxygen tanks he became unconscious on his way back. His buddy tried to administer first aid, when there was no response he tried to move him," Apakorn added.
