The Election Commission of India on Friday announced the dates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The election will be held in three phases — Oct. 28, Nov 3 and 7 — while the counting of votes will be on November 10. The term of the 243-member Bihar legislative assembly ends on November 29. For the first time, the Commission is extending postal ballot facility to people aged over 85 years, as well as to COVID-19 suspects and patients. Ashok Leyland Q4 net drops 58% to ₹158 cr.
Hinduja group flagship Ashok Leyland on Thursday reported a 58.1% decline in consolidated net profit to ₹157.85 crore in the fourth quarter ended March, impacted by higher expenses. The commercial vehicles maker posted revenue from operations at ₹9,926.97 crore compared with ₹8,142.11 crore a year earlier. Total expenses were higher at ₹9,429.55 crore compared with ₹7,831.21 crore, with cost of materials and services shooting up to ₹6,580.81 crore from ₹5,481.04 crore. Exceptional items grew to ₹266.71 crore, including impairment in value of goodwill and net assets of subsidiaries, loss of valuation of investment and voluntary retirement scheme. The company said its board has recommended dividend of ₹1 per share for the financial year ended March 31, 2022. For the full fiscal 2021-22, the company's consolidated net loss widened to ₹285.45 crore from a loss of ₹69.6 crore. ‘Become one with the sound’: Japan’s taiko reinvents drum tradition
In a hall on Japan's Sado island, 71-year-old Yoshikazu Fujimoto strikes the imposing drum mounted before him, producing a boom so powerful that it reverberates through the floorboards. Fujimoto is a veteran performer of Japanese taiko drumming, a musical form with roots in religious rituals, traditional theatre and the joyous abandon of seasonal festivals called matsuri. But for all its ancient pedigree, taiko as a stage performance is a fairly modern invention, developed by a jazz musician and popularised in part by one of Japan's most famous troupes: Sado island's Kodo. Fujimoto is the oldest of the 37 musicians that make up the group, which recruits members through a rigorous two-year training programme.
