NMDC raises iron ore prices

August 11, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Mining major NMDC has increased iron ore prices by ₹200 per tonne of lump ore and ₹100 for the same quantity of fines. Effective August 11, the new prices are ₹4,100 for lump ore and ₹2,910 for fines, the State-owned company said on Thursday. This is the first upward revision by NMDC this fiscal. From ₹6,100 for lump ore and ₹5,160 for fines on April 1, the prices had been on a decline. During the previous revision on July 12 they were set at ₹3,900 and ₹2,810 respectively. The prices, a reflection of the steel demand, however, had firmed up in the first quarter of CY22. The April prices for the lump and fines were ₹1,200 and ₹1,100 more respectively than the ₹4,900 and ₹4,060 fixed on December 28. “Demand for iron ore moves in tandem with steel demand,” CMD Sumit Deb had said in the AGM recently. “The Russia-Ukraine conflict and the continued impact of COVID-19 in China have been dampening demand for steel in 2022. Consequently, demand for iron ore has been declining and … [Read more...] about NMDC raises iron ore prices

Heathrow extends flight restrictions until end of October

August 15, 2022 by news.sky.com

Heathrow Airport has extended its flight restrictions until the end of October, hitting families' plans for half-term getaways. Previously the daily cap on passengers travelling through the airport - set at 100,000 - was due to end on September 11th. The airport said on Monday that without a cap, it will not be able to safely and reliably handle its flight schedule. Airline travellers across the UK have faced months of chaos, with disrupted and axed flights, paired with long waits at check-in, security and baggage collection. The main reason for the problems has been a struggle to recruit new staff. Heathrow claims that since the limits were introduced in July, there have been fewer last-minute cancellations, more punctual flights and shorter wait times for bags. But airlines blame the airport - one of the busiest in the world - for failing to prepare for a bounce back in passenger traffic following the pandemic. More from Business Sir Keir Starmer insists … [Read more...] about Heathrow extends flight restrictions until end of October

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here . I’ve been thinking about the threats against law enforcement and Trump’s barely veiled warning to Attorney General Merrick Garland about a “country on fire.” We should no longer wonder if we can avert a new era of political violence in the United States. It’s already here. But first, here are three new stories from The Atlantic . Why Trump’s safe was not safe The country that suffers whenever Russia schemes The odds of getting COVID from your housemate are “about a coin flip.” A Deepening Void Civil war is among the many terms we now use too easily. The American Civil War was a bloodbath driven by the inevitable confrontation between the Union and the organized forces of sedition and slavery. But at least the Civil War, as I said Friday on Morning … [Read more...] about The New Era of Political Violence Is Here

Asian shares mostly higher, echoing Wall Street rebound

August 16, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly rose Tuesday after a rebound on Wall Street, despite regional investor risks reflected in negative economic data out of China. The benchmark in Tokyo was little changed, erasing earlier gains, but indexes in South Korea and Australia gained. Hong Kong's benchmark slipped, while Shanghai shares rose. Falling oil prices are one positive factor for the region. In Japan, recent economic data have shown a recovery, but high rates of COVID-19 are fueling fears people will hold back on travel and other economic activity. Some analysts say stock prices haven't properly reflected real risks. “It doesn’t seem to matter what the news is, there is just a huge appetite to buy stocks. And to keep buying,” said Clifford Bennett, chief economist at ACY Securities. “Talk of the bottom having already been priced in seems somewhat … [Read more...] about Asian shares mostly higher, echoing Wall Street rebound

What Bob Dole Hath Wrought

November 11, 2020 by www.theatlantic.com

President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to concede the election is bad news for many reasons. One is that it all but guarantees that some portion of his followers will refuse to recognize the Biden administration’s legitimacy—just as some people did not recognize the Trump administration’s legitimacy, or the Obama administration’s legitimacy before it. President-elect Joe Biden is promising a return to normalcy, but the perception by some substantial part of the electorate that the American president is illegitimate is no longer an aberration in American politics. It is normal. This may have all started with Bob Dole. Although people tend to think of the former Senate majority leader, now 97 years old, as an old-school Republican of the pre-scorched-earth era, he was as early as 1993 a chief source of chaos and destabilization. When Bill Clinton routed the incumbent George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election—bringing the Democrats to the White House for the first time in 12 … [Read more...] about What Bob Dole Hath Wrought

Merrick Garland’s case against Trump is dangerously problematic

August 15, 2022 by www.foxnews.com

close Video Attorney General Garland and Wray show 'utter lack of integrity and rectitude': Jarrett Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett criticizes key players in the FBI's raid of former President Trump's home in Mar-a-Lago on 'Hannity.' NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! The confident predictions of Donald Trump’s sartorial refitting from blue custom suits to orange jumpsuits are, as always, premature and overwrought. Hysteria is what members of the liberal media do best. Furious assumptions and wanton speculation are their specialties. They are terminally allergic to the meaning and nuance of laws. Facts are trifling matters that tend to impede their favored narrative. But in the interest of truth and accuracy, let’s explore a few salient facts and relevant laws that the mainstream press would never bother to consider in their zeal to convict the former president of something—anything. Life in Afghanistan after a year under the Taliban takeover

August 15, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

The future looks bleak for the vast majority of Afghans. At least 43% of the population is living on less than one meal a day and 97% of Afghans are expected to be living below the poverty line by the end of this year. Some families have resorted to selling their organs to eat and others have sold their own children in order to survive. “As global leaders sought to economically isolate the Taliban, their policy approaches have crippled the economy, destroyed the banking sector and plunged the country into a humanitarian catastrophe that has left more than 24 million without enough food to eat each day,” Vicki Aken, Afghanistan director of the International Rescue Committee, said Friday. The organization added that unless this is addressed, the current humanitarian crisis could lead to more deaths than 20 years of war. In the year since the ultraconservative, insular and violent Taliban returned to power, this desperately poor and violent country has rapidly deteriorated. … [Read more...] about Life in Afghanistan after a year under the Taliban takeover

Rep. Carolyn Maloney Says ‘Off the Record’ Biden Is ‘Not Running Again’

August 15, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Democrat Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who is in a heated primary battle with longtime House colleague Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), said “off the record” that President Joe Biden is “not running again” in 2024. Maloney, during an “on the record” interview with the New York Times, stated that “off the record,” he would “not” be running for a second term. However, this is before the interviewer corrected the congresswoman to let her know she was still “on the record.” Maloney then stated that “he should not run again.” Here is the interview transcript, as published by the New York Times . (Maloney’s answers are in response to the questions in bold): Eleanor Randolph: Should President Biden run again? Off the record, he’s not running again. Jyoti Thottam: Not off the record. On the record. On the record? No, he should not run again. The interview was published after Maloney had a mixup during a debate a couple of weeks ago when she was asked about Biden running … [Read more...] about Rep.
