Study: Police are no more likely to shoot at blacks than whites, but blacks get more rough treatment
Blacks aren’t more likely than whites to be shot at by police, but blacks are more likely to be subjected to rough treatment such as handcuffing, and being pushed to the ground or against a wall, a new study has found. The study (PDF) by Harvard economist Roland Fryer Jr. found that officers were more likely to shoot without first being attacked when the suspects were white rather than black, the New York Times’ Upshot blog reports. That conclusion was based on 1,332 police shootings between 2000 and 2015 in the Texas cities of Houston, Austin and Dallas; six large counties in Florida; and Los Angeles.Fryer wanted to also study situations that could provoke a justified police shooting, rather than cases in which a shooting occurred. New crime-fighting tool, the police tweet, leads to speedy arrest of shooting suspects
Once upon a time, police officers commonly walked a beat and interacted with the community, picking up tips along the way that could help solve crimes.Today, their superiors are using social media to keep in touch with even more members of the public. That both frees up officers on patrol to respond to incident calls and increases the chance of receiving crime-solving tips, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.A recent shooting at a fast-food restaurant in Oakland, Calif., was quickly solved after Capt. Anthony Toribio went on Twitter and posted a description of the suspects to the 11,000 individuals following the police department and his own nearly 1,000 followers. Within an hour, a woman who saw the alert called police, giving the location of the suspects, the newspaper recounts. Police rushed to apprehend them and said they found the suspects and the gun used in the shooting in the Infiniti sedan seen fleeing the scene.PiXXart / Shutterstock.comSocial media is not foolproof, … [Read more...] about New crime-fighting tool, the police tweet, leads to speedy arrest of shooting suspects

Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee pressed Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh about his views of presidential power, gay rights and other hot-button issues on Thursday. Kavanaugh avoided answering questions about his own beliefs, as well as his views of recent precedent and issues that are likely to come before the court. In an exchange with Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Kavanaugh refused to say whether he thinks character matters for the president of the United States, and he refused to commit to recusing himself from any Supreme Court matters concerning the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller. Kavanaugh did say that a court order requiring a president to do something or prohibiting a president from doing something is the final word in our … [Read more...] about Live blog of confirmation hearings, Day 3: Kavanaugh won’t say whether president’s character matters
