HBO issued a statement Friday accusing President Donald Trump of misappropriating its trademark after he tweeted a Game of Thrones-themed meme about imposing sanctions on Iran. The Trump administration on Friday announced the reimposition of all U.S. sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, ramping up economic pressure on the Islamic Republic as the president completed the unraveling of what had been one of his predecessor’s signature foreign policy achievements. The sanctions, which will take effect on Monday, cover Iran’s shipping, financial and energy sectors and are the second batch the administration has reimposed since Trump withdrew from the landmark accord in May. Shortly after the announcement, President Trump tweeted a movie poster-like image of himself walking out of what appears to be fog with the phrase “Sanctions are Coming, November 5.” “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark … [Read more...] about HBO: Trump ‘Misappropriated’ ‘Game of Thrones’ with Iran Sanctions Poster

close Video White House announces return of US sanctions on Iran They might not be as terrifying as the White Walkers or Khaleesi's dragons, but the Trump administration's new sanctions on Iran were announced Friday with the help of a "Game of Thrones"-inspired movie poster declaring: "SANCTIONS ARE COMING." The rollout initially was executed in traditional Washington fashion: a conference call, a press release, a formal White House tweet. The headline was that the administration, as expected, would restore the final round of sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the controversial 2015 Iran nuclear deal -- though there would be exemptions for eight countries. But then President Trump stepped in with extra flair, tweeting the following meme from the Westeros Wing: It's unclear who created the online movie-style poster, and whether House (John) Bolton was consulted. On the earlier conference call, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury … [Read more...] about ‘Sanctions are Coming’: Trump invokes ‘Game of Thrones’ to announce Iran crackdown
Marc van Bloemen has lived in the old town of Dubrovnik, a Croatian citadel widely praised as the jewel of the Adriatic, for decades, since he was a child. He says it used to be a privilege. Now it's a nightmare. Crowds of tourists clog the entrances to the ancient walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as huge cruise ships unload thousands more daily. People bump into each other on the famous limestone-paved Stradun, the pedestrian street lined with medieval churches and palaces, as fans of the popular TV series "Game of Thrones" search for the locations where it was filmed. Dubrovnik is a prime example of the effects of mass tourism, a global phenomenon in which the increase in people travelling means standout cites — particularly small ones — get overwhelmed by crowds. As the numbers of visitors keeps rising, local authorities are looking for ways to keep the throngs from killing off the town's charm. "It's beyond belief, it's like living in the middle of … [Read more...] about Tourists Are Coming: Crowds Threatens Croatia’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Town

DUBROVNIK, Croatia — Winter is coming. But Katja Seref feels neither dread nor fear when she hears those words, uttered as a warning in “Game of Thrones.” “I feel relief,” Seref said, still wearing her blue khaleesi dress, the costume of one of the characters vying to rule the Seven Kingdoms, after a grueling day leading yet another “Game of Thrones” tour. “It means I can get a break.” Every summer, the hordes descend upon Dubrovnik, a gem of a Croatian city nestled on the Adriatic Sea. The crowds are drawn by the same magical beauty that has long appealed to Hollywood location scouts, like those who chose the city as the setting for the fictional King’s Landing on “Game of Thrones,” a hit show on HBO. But the annual invading army of tourists toting selfie sticks threatens what attracted them in the first place. After all, it is hard to feel the sublime majesty of this place when crammed in an interminable line … [Read more...] about Want to travel to King’s Landing from ‘Game of Thrones’? You’re not alone.
