Serena Williams’ retirement keeps her from elusive Grand Slam record

August 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Tennis star Serena Williams said in a Tuesday Vogue article that she plans on retiring from the sport after this year's U.S. Open, which begins August 29. The U.S. Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of 2022. Williams currently holds 23 singles Grand Slam titles, second only to Margaret Court, who has 24. Should Williams win the U.S. Open, she would share the record with Court, but she cannot overtake the International Tennis Hall of Famer if she sticks to her current retirement plan. In Vogue 's as-told-to cover story, Williams said she has "never liked the word retirement " and added she is "evolving away from tennis." She also indicated she plans to focus on Serena Ventures, her venture capital firm, as well as expanding her family . Of the U.S. Open being her last tournament, she wrote on Instagram that "[t]he countdown has begun" and that she's "gonna relish these next few weeks." Many tennis experts already rank Williams ahead of Court on lists of the … [Read more...] about Serena Williams’ retirement keeps her from elusive Grand Slam record

Serena Williams: Six Memorable Grand Slam Finals

August 9, 2022 by www.news18.com

Serena Williams announced on Tuesday the countdown to her retirement had begun from tennis after a career which brought her 23 Grand Slam singles titles. Look at six of her most memorable finals at the majors: 1999 US Open — Just 17 years old, the first of her Slam titles came at Flushing Meadows courtesy of a 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) win over Switzerland’s Martina Hingis. Williams had defeated the likes of Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles and 1998 champion Lindsay Davenport on the way. She was also the first black woman to win a major since Althea Gibson in 1958. “It’s really amazing for me just to even have an opportunity to be compared as great as Althea Gibson. She was a great player. It’s pretty exciting for me,” she said. 2002 French Open — Serena had to wait the best part of three years to win a second Slam with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over sister Venus in the final at Roland Garros. Venus had won the sisters’ only other previous meeting in a major final in New York in 2001. … [Read more...] about Serena Williams: Six Memorable Grand Slam Finals

Serena Williams Rose From Mean Streets to Grand Slam Tennis Queen

August 9, 2022 by www.news18.com

Serena Williams went from learning tennis on public courts in a notorious American gangland neighborhood to becoming a superstar for a generation and perhaps the greatest player in history. The 40-year-old legend declared Tuesday on Instagram the “countdown has begun” to her retirement after a Vogue magazine story talking about how bad she is at saying goodbye. Serena became an African-American icon in a white-dominated sport, winning 23 Grand Slam titles and smashing aside milestones with a determination as powerful as the raw energy that defines her shotmaking magic. Serena and sister Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, were executive producers on the movie “King Richard” that told the Hollywood fairy-tale of them being taught tennis by father Richard Williams while growing up on the tough streets of Compton, California. “I am still just that girl with the racquet and a dream and I’m just playing for that,” Williams said after a 2013 US Open title. She wound up living … [Read more...] about Serena Williams Rose From Mean Streets to Grand Slam Tennis Queen

In an essay released Tuesday by Vogue magazine, and a post on Instagram — the sorts of direct-to-fans communication favored these days by celebrities, a category she most definitely fits — Williams was not completely clear on the timeline for her last match, but she made it sound as if that could be at the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York. “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. Kate Middleton’s uncle says Cambridges have “hands full” with Windsor move

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Prince William and Kate Middleton 's potential move to a cottage on Queen Elizabeth II 's Windsor Castle estate will see them have their "hands full" over the summer, according to the duchess' uncle. Gary Goldsmith , Kate's maternal uncle who has become the most outspoken member of her close-knit family, has told British tabloid newspaper The Sun that the move will bring with it a new chapter for the Cambridges. "William and Kate are going to have their hands full this summer as they move home to be nearer the Queen and settle the kids into a new school," he said. "But I think they are ready for the next chapter in their lives." Though a move to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Great Park for William and Kate has been speculated on for a number of months, there has been no official statement from either Kensington or Buckingham Palace to confirm this. In June, a senior palace source said that a firm decision had yet to be made by the couple: "We're obviously aware that … [Read more...] about Kate Middleton’s uncle says Cambridges have “hands full” with Windsor move

Town honors Ahmaud Arbery day after end of hate crimes case

August 9, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A crowd of dozens chanted on a sweltering street corner Tuesday as Ahmaud Arbery's hometown unveiled new street signs honoring the young Black man who was fatally shot after being chased by three white men in a nearby neighborhood — a crime local officials vowed to never forget. Arbery's parents joined the celebration the day after the men responsible for their son's death received harsh prison sentences in U.S. District Court for committing federal hate crimes. Officials in coastal Brunswick, where Arbery grew up, have ordered that intersections along all 2.7 miles (4.35 kilometers) of Albany Street that runs through the heart of the city's Black community will have additional signs designating it as Honorary Ahmaud Arbery Street. The first two signs were unveiled Tuesday at an intersection near the Brunswick African-American Cultural Center, where one wall is adorned with a giant mural of Arbery's smiling face. “That's an honor, is all I can say,” said … [Read more...] about Town honors Ahmaud Arbery day after end of hate crimes case

Trevor Noah Hammers Bill Barr for Comparing COVID Lockdowns to Slavery

September 18, 2020 by www.thedailybeast.com

This week, Attorney General William Barr said in a speech , “Other than slavery, which was a different kind of restraint,” the coronavirus stay-at-home orders were “the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history.” The Daily Show host Trevor Noah thinks that might be going a tad too far. “OK, slow your roll there, Droopy Dog,” Noah said in response. “Corona quarantines are not even close to the worst intrusion into civil liberties.” Off the top of his head, he listed Japanese internment camps during World War II and the Jim Crow-era efforts to stop Black people from voting as two other examples. “And don’t get me wrong,” he added. “I know that Barr said slavery was worse. But he shouldn’t even be mentioning slavery in the same breath as corona shutdowns.” Noah also pointed out that this is hardly the first time Republicans have compared something they don’t like to slavery. “‘Obama is like slavery! Paying taxes is like slavery!’” He wondered if Barr … [Read more...] about Trevor Noah Hammers Bill Barr for Comparing COVID Lockdowns to Slavery

Queen’s traditional Balmoral welcome scaled back amid mobility problems

August 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Queen Elizabeth II's traditional welcome ceremony held each year when she takes up residence at her Balmoral Scottish castle for the summer has been scaled back in another example of established traditions being altered because of the 96-year-old monarch's advanced age and health issues. The queen has been in residence on her Scottish estate since late July, where she has been staying at Craigowan Lodge—a small country house built by Queen Victoria—while Balmoral Castle was open to the public. When the castle closes to the public in August each year, the queen takes up official residence and she receives a steady stream of guests including family members and a traditional visit from the prime minister. The monarch usually stays at Balmoral until the fall, returning in late September or early October. Each year, to mark the queen's moving into the castle, an official guard of honor is formed outside the estate gates from an armed forces regiment. The queen traditionally has … [Read more...] about Queen’s traditional Balmoral welcome scaled back amid mobility problems
