Women 22% More Likely to Suffer With Long Covid Than Men: Study
Women are “significantly” more likely to suffer from long Covid than males and will experience substantially different symptoms, finds a study, underscoring a critical need for sex-disaggregated research. Long Covid is a syndrome in which complications persist more than four weeks after the initial infection of Covid-19, sometimes for many months. Researchers from the Johnson & Johnson Office of the Chief Medical Officer Health of Women Team, who carried out the analysis of data from around 1.3 million patients, observed females with long Covid are presenting with a variety of symptoms including ear, nose, and throat issues; mood disorders, neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological disorders; as well as fatigue. Male patients, however, were more likely to experience endocrine disorders such as diabetes and kidney disorders. The odds of females developing long Covid syndrome is 22 per cent higher than males, the researchers noted in the study published in the … [Read more...] about Women 22% More Likely to Suffer With Long Covid Than Men: Study
Lesbian Wedding Is A Tradition Within This Karnataka Community; Here’s Why
Same sex weddings may be a common thing now. But a tribal community from Karnataka has been following same sex wedding as a religious belief for a very long time, so long that none living in the community now knows when and how it began. Dadduve Maduve (Dadduve Wedding), as it is called, is a wedding between two females that is celebrated grandly in the Halakki Okkaliga community in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Out of the two females – both dressed in saree – one plays the groom and other, the bride. They are brought in procession just like a regular baraat and all rituals of a regular wedding are followed. One such Dadduve Maduve took place recently. This female-female wedding is conducted every year to pray Lord Indra that the rains may have mercy. The tribals pray to Gods that the rain shouldn’t be more or less than required. After the procession and rituals, the newly weds are blessed by everyone. People even give them gifts just as a regular wedding. There is lots of … [Read more...] about Lesbian Wedding Is A Tradition Within This Karnataka Community; Here’s Why
R Kelly jury selection underway for trial fixing allegations
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 CHICAGO (AP) — Jury selection got underway Monday at R. Kelly’s federal trial in his hometown of Chicago, where the R&B singer faces charges that he rigged his 2008 state child pornography trial by threatening and paying off a girl with whom he allegedly filmed himself having sex when he was around 30 and she was no older than 14. Jurors acquitted Kelly on all charges in that 2008 trial, some explaining later that they felt they had no choice because the girl did not testify. The woman, now in her 30s and referred to in filings only as “Minor 1,” will be the government’s star witness in the federal trial. Kelly, 55, was already sentenced by a New York federal judge to a 30-year prison term for a 2021 conviction on charges he used his fame to sexually abuse other young fans. Kelly, wearing a light gray suit and a tie, sat next to his attorney Jennifer Bonjean as court began … [Read more...] about R Kelly jury selection underway for trial fixing allegations
Salt substitutes lower blood pressure, risk of premature death: study
Sprinkling salt substitutes on meals could add years to your life, according to new research, by addressing the so-called "silent killer." A global study published in the journal Heart showed they lower risks of premature death from cardiovascular disease by 13 percent. Salt substitutes also reduce heart attacks and strokes by 11 percent. Eating too much salt can trigger clots that cut off blood supply to major organs. The replacements taste just like the real thing, and are already available in supermarkets. They contain added potassium and less sodium—protecting against high blood pressure, said the international team of researchers. Co-author author Maoyi Tian, of Harbin Medical University in China, said: "The magnitude of the cardiovascular protection afforded is likely to be determined by the magnitude of the fall in blood pressure. "Blood pressure-mediated beneficial effects of salt substitute on clinical outcomes appear likely to be accrued across a broad range of … [Read more...] about Salt substitutes lower blood pressure, risk of premature death: study
Teen refusing to accept dad’s “affair baby” as sibling applauded online
A man who had an affair with a woman only 10 years older than his daughter , and wants his daughter to accept the child he is having with the woman, has received backlash on Reddit . In a post shared under the username u/birdie_72 on Reddit's Am I The A**hole (AITA) subforum, the man's 16-year-old daughter said she found out about her 42-year-old dad's affair about a year ago. The user in the latest Reddit post said: "I have seen him about five times since this all happened a year ago. I act pleasant when I see them, but things are awkward and my dad and I's relationship is clearly strained." In a July 2017 article for the Institute for Family Studies (IFS), Nicholas H. Wolfinger, a professor of family and consumer studies and an adjunct professor of sociology at the University of Utah, said that "since 2000, older Americans are cheating more , while younger Americans are cheating less," based on the previous 30 years of the General Social Survey (GSS). According to the … [Read more...] about Teen refusing to accept dad’s “affair baby” as sibling applauded online
Trans teen blasted for demanding mom remove tattoo with “dead name” in it
A transgender teen who is demanding his mom remove a tattoo featuring his "dead name" has been met with strong opposition online. According to data published by Statista in 2021, an estimated 12 percent of Americans who got a tattoo said they regretted having it done. However, in the case of one mom who is the subject of a post shared to Reddit by her 17-year-old transgender son, it's a slightly different story. According to the post, which was uploaded by someone claiming to be the teenager writing under the handle throwaway-whoopwhoop, they only recently came out as trans to their family. But while they admitted their mom has been "supportive" on the whole, the pair have been at loggerheads over one of her tattoos . "My mom got a tattoo with my sister's name and my dead name after I was born," her son explained. "It's a huge tattoo with a unique design that incorporates her and my dead name. It covers most of her arm, and she is really proud of it because my older … [Read more...] about Trans teen blasted for demanding mom remove tattoo with “dead name” in it
The pet industry created a new species of crayfish that can clone itself
Most species of crayfish reproduce the same way that humans do: by having sex . But one species of crayfish that evolved out of the pet trade can do something unique—clone itself—and this ability has led populations of the crustacean to spawn out of control. For a study published today in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution , researchers sequenced the genomes of 11 marbled crayfish, both from the wild and from the pet trade. They found that the genomes in all 11 animals were nearly identical, meaning that they don't reproduce sexually, and that they are officially a different species than their North American mother species, Procambarus fallax. "Here we have an evolutionary event that has happened only a very short time ago," Frank Lyko, head of divisions of epigenetics at the German Cancer Research Center, told Newsweek. "Certainly there will be some changes, genetic changes over time, that will make it more normal. At this specific time point in evolution it's … [Read more...] about The pet industry created a new species of crayfish that can clone itself
Britain Says Monkeypox Outbreak Shows Signs of ‘Slowing’
British health officials say the monkeypox outbreak across the country shows signs of slowing but that it’s still too soon to know if the decline will be maintained. In a statement on Monday, the Health Security Agency said authorities are reporting about 29 new monkeypox infections every day, compared to about 52 cases a day during the last week in June. In July, officials estimated the outbreak was doubling in size about every two weeks. To date, the U.K. has recorded more than 3,000 cases of monkeypox, with more than 70% of cases in London. The agency also said more than 27,000 people were immunized with a vaccine designed against smallpox, a related disease. These thousands of vaccines, administered by the (National Health Service)to those at highest risk of exposure, should have a significant impact on the transmission of the virus, the agency said. It said the vast majority of cases were in men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with other men and that vaccines were being … [Read more...] about Britain Says Monkeypox Outbreak Shows Signs of ‘Slowing’
