F1: Carlos Sainz Takes Maiden Pole for 150th Start at British Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz grabbed his maiden pole position on Saturday when he outpaced world champion Max Verstappen, who survived a spin in an exciting rain-hit qualifying for the British Grand Prix. The 27-year-old Spaniard clocked a best lap of one minute and 40.983 seconds to beat the Red Bull driver by 0.072 seconds in the closing minute of a tense session run in treacherous wet conditions. His first pole came ahead of what will be his 150th Grand Prix start in Sunday’s race, just two weeks after he was a very close second to the Dutchman in a thrilling finish at the Canadian Grand Prix. In a topsy-turvy session that saw positions shuffled rapidly in the changing conditions, Charles Leclerc was third in the second Ferrari ahead of Sergio Perez of Red Bull and home hero seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. After promising to fight for the front row, it was a disappointment for the local fans as Hamilton failed to extend his run of eight British front row starts. Matt Fitzpatrick sets target after US Open win and makes Sheffield United comparison
Maiden major-winner Matt Fitzpatrick wants to follow in the footsteps of Nick Faldo after storming to success in the U.S. Open on Sunday. In a win many fans may feel was a long time coming, the Yorkshire man finished one shot clear of Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. That leaves Fitzpatrick five majors short of Faldo, the most successful British player of the modern era after clinching each of the Masters and The Open on three occasions. "Six is the number," Fitzpatrick told reporters following the biggest day of his career to date. "That's the number that we all agreed on. I've got a bit of a way to go, but it's a good start. You want to go win more now, there's no doubt about that. It's easy to still go off track. I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing, and hopefully more will come. I'm delighted with one so far." Considering he only turned professional in 2014, the 27-year-old has time on his side as he … [Read more...] about Matt Fitzpatrick sets target after US Open win and makes Sheffield United comparison

The economics of cow slaughter
There is no cause to believe that the >decisive defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s communal and caste politics in Bihar will mean an end to its vicious campaign against cow slaughter. The online threat from a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) official’s twitter handle to retailers to stop selling goods made of cow hide is clear evidence. Although the general campaign against cow slaughter targets Muslims, it is Hindus who will be most adversely affected if the Hindutva brigade has its way with a total ban on cattle slaughter. Brinda Karat Industry choked Along with farmers, the entire chain of the leather industry will be affected with a drastic fall in supply of raw material. According to the Council for Leather Exports, 2.5 million people, the majority of them scheduled castes, are employed in the industry. An estimated eight lakh Dalits earn a living through flaying the skin of dead cattle. This activity is within the law. But with the vigilante actions … [Read more...] about The economics of cow slaughter
Gerrit Cole’s solid start, Matt Carpenter’s 2 homers lead Yankees to 13-4 rout over Guardians
CLEVELAND — The Yankees don’t let losses linger. After falling to the Astros on Thursday — and a rainout Friday — the Bombers simply got back to business. Gerrit Cole threw six solid innings, Matt Carpenter homered twice and the Yankees clobbered the Guardians 13-4 at Progressive Field Saturday in the first game of a day-night split doubleheader. The Yankees improved to 16-5 in games following a loss this season. Through 78 games, the Yankees have tied the second-best start to the season in the majors over the last 93 years. They tied the 2001 Mariners, who lost the American League Championship Series that season, and are one game off the pace of the 1998 Yankees, who won the World Series that year. They are now 18-5 against teams from the American League Central and 4-0 against the Guardians, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Cole allowed two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out six. He gave up two home runs. He has allowed 14 this season and only allowed … [Read more...] about Gerrit Cole’s solid start, Matt Carpenter’s 2 homers lead Yankees to 13-4 rout over Guardians

Biden says he backs changing filibuster rules for abortion
President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the Supreme Court’s decision ending a constitutional right to abortion is “destabilizing” and that he supports changing Senate rules to codify nationwide abortion protections. He maintained the ruling does not affect U.S. standing on the world stage as he took credit for modernizing the transatlantic alliance to adapt to new threats from Russia and China. Mr. Biden was speaking to reporters at the conclusion of a five-day foreign trip to huddle with NATO allies in Madrid and the leaders of the Group of Seven advanced democratic economies in the Bavarian Alps, which came as the nation was still grappling with the fallout from Friday’s Supreme Court decision. “America is better positioned to lead the world than we ever have been,” Mr. Biden said. “But one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of United States in overruling not only Roe v. Wade, but essentially challenging the right to privacy.” … [Read more...] about Biden says he backs changing filibuster rules for abortion
