Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight
I’ve thought about Jim Obergefell often since we first spoke nine years ago, after his historic marriage to his husband on an airport tarmac outside Baltimore. He’s come to mind mostly during big moments in my own life as a gay man in America. I thought of Jim and his late husband, John Arthur, when I first considered proposing to my husband, Aaron, and the promises — in sickness and in health, till death do us part — that I’d be making. I thought of Jim and John again when Aaron and I exchanged vows in San Francisco City Hall in 2018, with our families around us and the bust of Harvey Milk nearby . We chose City Hall for its beauty and ease, but could have been anywhere in the country — a right Jim and John won us by overcoming a mountain of obstacles just to reach that tarmac. Advertisement I thought of Jim again last week, around the time I was emailing our lawyers about the next set of paperwork to file in our pursuit of U.S. citizenship for Aaron, who is … [Read more...] about Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight
“Great Replacement Theory” has inspired 4 mass shootings in recent years
A racist ideology is being investigated as the motivating factor in a supermarket massacre in Buffalo, New York, that left 10 people dead on Saturday. Authorities say Payton Gendron, a white 18-year-old from Conklin, New York, carried out an act of "racially motivated violent extremism" when he opened fire at the Tops Friendly Market. Most of the victims were Black. Authorities said they were investigating the attack, which the shooter livestreamed on Twitch until the company shut the broadcast down, as a potential federal hate crime or act of domestic terrorism. A 180-page manifesto , purportedly authored by Gendron, said the attack was motivated by the "Great Replacement Theory"—a racist conspiracy theory that claims white people are being replaced by minorities and people of color. The ideology fueled the deadly 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacists chanted "Jews will not replace us." The belief has also incited a string of mass killings in … [Read more...] about “Great Replacement Theory” has inspired 4 mass shootings in recent years

Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue rabbi warned of need for gun control before shooting: “Where are our leaders?”
Three months before Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue became the latest target of a deadly mass shooting, the rabbi leading the congregation warned of the need for gun control laws, lamenting the lack of action from the country's leaders. Multiple casualties in addition to six wounded, among them four police officers, were reported after a shooter opened fire in the synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood Saturday morning. "Despite continuous calls for sensible gun control and mental health care, our elected leaders in Washington knew that it would fade away in time," Rabbi Jeffrey Myers wrote in a blog post in July. "Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the mid-term elections, I fear that the status quo will remain unchanged, and school shootings will resume. I shouldn't have to include in my daily morning prayers that God should watch over my wife and daughter, both teachers, and keep them safe. Where are our leaders?" A suspect was apprehended following the … [Read more...] about Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue rabbi warned of need for gun control before shooting: “Where are our leaders?”

Warring pensioner neighbours spend £500,000 in 20-year battle over tiny strip of land
Two warring neighbours have spent half a million pounds fighting a bitter boundary battle over the last two decades. Pensioners David Poole and Terry Doyle have been locked in a turf war over a narrow strip of land which separates their luxury homes in Perthshire since 1999. The lengthy feud has seen several costly trips to the civil courts and even sparked an assault trial. On Tuesday, a sheriff ordered a hearing that could finally resolve the ugly feud between the retired businessmen. Mr Poole, 81, who has instigated the legal action, told the Daily Record his latest court bid was an “open and shut case” intended to ban his rival from stepping on his land for good. Terence Doyle insists he is the rightful owner of the land ( Image: Perthshire Picture Agency (PPA)) But Mr Doyle, 82, insists he is the rightful owner of the land, saying his “rogue” neighbours had “bled him dry” by repeatedly hauling him before the courts. The ugly dispute began within weeks … [Read more...] about Warring pensioner neighbours spend £500,000 in 20-year battle over tiny strip of land
