Jan. 6 Panel Tracks How Trump Created and Spread Election Lies
WASHINGTON — The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol made a wide-ranging case on Monday that former President Donald J. Trump created and relentlessly spread the lie that the 2020 election had been stolen from him in the face of mounting evidence from an expanding chorus of advisers that he had been legitimately defeated. The committee, in its second hearing this month, traced the origins and progression of what it has described as Mr. Trump’s “big lie.” It showed through live witness testimony and recorded depositions how the former president, defying many of his advisers, insisted on declaring victory on election night before the votes were fully counted, then sought to challenge his defeat with increasingly outlandish and baseless claims that he was repeatedly informed were wrong. “He’s become detached from reality if he really believes this stuff,” William P. Barr, the former attorney general, said of Mr. Trump during a videotaped interview the … [Read more...] about Jan. 6 Panel Tracks How Trump Created and Spread Election Lies
Prosecute Trump? Put Yourself in Merrick Garland’s Shoes.
The evidence gathered by the Jan. 6 committee and in some of the federal cases against those involved in the Capitol attack poses for Attorney General Merrick Garland one of the most consequential questions that any attorney general has ever faced: Should the United States indict former President Donald Trump? The basic allegations against Mr. Trump are well known. In disregard of advice by many of his closest aides, including Attorney General William Barr, he falsely claimed that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent and stolen, he pressured Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to count certified electoral votes for Joe Biden during the electoral count in Congress on Jan. 6, and he riled up a mob, directed it to the Capitol and refused for a time to take steps to stop the ensuing violence. To indict Mr. Trump for these and other acts, Mr. Garland must make three decisions, each more difficult than the previous and none with an obvious answer. First, he must … [Read more...] about Prosecute Trump? Put Yourself in Merrick Garland’s Shoes.
Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
L egend says the diver drowned retrieving the pearl. Trapped in a giant Tridacna clam, his body was brought to the surface by his fellow tribesmen in Palawan, a province of the Philippines, in May 1934. When the clam was pried open, and the meat scraped out, the local chief beheld something marvelous: a massive pearl, its sheen like satin. In its surface, the chief discerned the face of the Prophet Muhammad. He named it the Pearl of Allah. At 14 pounds, one ounce, it was the largest pearl ever discovered. In a 1939 article that appeared in Natural History magazine, he recounted the chief’s refusal to sell: “A pearl with the image of Mohammed, the Prophet of Allah, is earned by devotion, by sacrifice, not bought with money.” But when the chief’s son fell ill with malaria, Cobb used … [Read more...] about Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu

Compound Archery Stealing the Spotlight as Recurve Team Fail to Get Their Act Together
Unlike always where recurve archery, an Olympic event, hogged more of the spotlight in India, this year it will be the compound archers who will look to make hay while the sun shines thanks to the Asian Games in Jakarta. The compound team has been tipped for more glory than their recurve counterparts. The dependable Abhishek Verma, who guided India to a Gold medal in 2014 in Incheon, will spearhead the Indian challenge in compound archery as they look to retain their title. For the veteran Verma though, recognition has eluded him and so has financial support as compound archery is not among the Olympic events. "Despite the achievements, no one takes notice of us and somehow we are yet to grab the headlines. Medals are the only ways to get attention and attract some eyeballs. This fuels my hunger to strive harder and go for medals," Verma told Firstpost. In Jakarta, the compound archery events this year feature the team events in men’s, women’s and mixed team categories only … [Read more...] about Compound Archery Stealing the Spotlight as Recurve Team Fail to Get Their Act Together
Will Agnipath energise or demoralise the military?
On June 14, the government announced the Agnipath scheme , which fundamentally transforms the process of recruitment of soldiers, sailors and airmen into the three services. Agniveers, the recruits, will be employed for four years, after which 25% of them will be selected for enrolment in the regular cadre, while the rest will be given a certain amount of money and be shown avenues to get back to civilian life. The scheme has generated a lot of debate, and protests against it have been violent in several parts of the country. To discuss and understand the nuances of the issue, Dinakar Peri spoke to Lieutenant General D.S. Hooda,(Retd.) , former Northern Army Commander, and Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (Retd.) , former additional director general of Centre for Air Power Studies. Edited excerpts: Can you provide an overview of Agnipath and put things in context, given the concerns? Lt Gen D.S. Hooda: Let me try and take a very dispassionate view and look at both … [Read more...] about Will Agnipath energise or demoralise the military?

To some defenders, gun ruling could right a racial wrong
NEW YORK (AP) — When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down New York's tight restrictions on who can carry a handgun, condemnation erupted from liberal leaders and activists. But some public defenders, often allies of progressive activists, praised the court's ruling, saying gun-permitting rules like New York's have long been a license for racial discrimination. By making it a crime for most people to carry a handgun, New York and a few other states have ended up putting people — overwhelmingly people of color — behind bars for conduct that would be legal elsewhere, the defense lawyers complain. “New York’s gun licensing regulations have been arbitrarily and discriminatorily applied, disproportionately ensnaring the people we represent, the majority of whom are from communities of color,” said The Legal Aid Society, which represents criminal defendants who can’t afford their own lawyers. The court's decision Thursday concerned a century-old law that said New Yorkers seeking gun … [Read more...] about To some defenders, gun ruling could right a racial wrong
