Live Updates Chinese forces officially began four days of military exercises around Taiwan on Thursday afternoon local time, a response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial visit to the self-ruled island between August 2 and 3. China's People's Liberation Army warned last week that it wouldn't "sit back" if Pelosi travelled to Taiwan. By doing so, she became the most senior American elected official to visit in a quarter-century. Taiwan's Defense Ministry confirmed the detection of Chinese long-range missiles fired at around 1:56 p.m. local time (1:56 a.m. ET). The island's missile defenses were at the ready, the ministry said. U.S. President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told NPR before the drills began that the exercises would lead to unnecessary "risks and challenges." The White House was communicating with both Beijing and Taipei to avoid miscalculations, he said. Langya Henipavirus: New Zoonotic Virus Found in China Causes Fever, Fatigue | All You Need to Know
A new type of animal-derived Henipavirus has so far infected people in Shandong and Henan provinces of China, official media here reported on Tuesday. The new type of Henipavirus (also named Langya henipavirus, LayV) was found in throat swab samples from febrile patients in eastern China, state-run Global Times quoted media reports. Henipaviruses are classified as biosafety level 4 (BSL4) pathogens. They can cause severe illness in animals and humans, and as of now there are no licensed drugs or vaccines meant for humans. Here’s all we know about the Langya henipavirus: What is the Langya virus? The newly discovered virus is a “phylogenetically distinct Henipavirus”, according to a recent study titled, ‘A Zoonotic Henipavirus in Febrile Patients in China’, published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Among several types of Henipaviruses such as Hendra, Nipah, Cedar, Mojiang, the Ghanaian bat virus, the US’ Centre for Disease Control says that only Hendra and … [Read more...] about Langya Henipavirus: New Zoonotic Virus Found in China Causes Fever, Fatigue | All You Need to Know
Blinken Unveils Strategy for Africa: Flatters Ruling Elite, Ignores China Threat
Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a speech Monday at the University of Pretoria in South Africa in which he purported to outline the Biden administration’s new strategy toward Africa — though he simply recycled old platitudes. Blinken began with a series of well-worn clichés about South Africa’s transition to apartheid — nearly 30 years ago — and completely ignored the country’s current challenges: crime, corruption, chronic electricity shortages, and economic stagnation. The Secretary of State then outlined four priorities in America’s relationship with the African continent: “openness,” “the promise of democracy”; recovery from COVID; and helping with “clean energy transition” to deal with climate change. Blinken did not mention that South Africa suffers today from a lack of electricity, and is being encouraged to ignore its abundant coal resources in favor of renewable energy projects that are ostensibly to be financed by overseas donor nations. At times, it … [Read more...] about Blinken Unveils Strategy for Africa: Flatters Ruling Elite, Ignores China Threat

China cannot stop U.S. officials from visiting Taiwan: Pelosi
The U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday, August 5, 2022, that China will not isolate Taiwan by preventing US officials from travelling there. She made the remarks in Tokyo, the final leg of an Asia tour highlighted by a visit to Taiwan that infuriated China. Ms. Pelosi, the first House speaker to visit Taiwan in 25 years, said Wednesday in Taipei that the US commitment to democracy in the self-governing island and elsewhere “remains ironclad”. Ms. Pelosi and five other members of Congress arrived in Tokyo late Thursday after visiting Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. China, which claims Taiwan and has threatened to annex it by force if necessary, called her visit to the island a provocation and on Thursday began military drills, including missile firing, in six zones surrounding Taiwan. Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit: Time to Counter China’s Extravagant and Illegal Territorial Claims
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan can be analysed from various angles: her longstanding campaign against China’s suppression of human freedoms, its conduct in the western Pacific, its challenge to US global power, Taiwan as a vital part of the first island chain that curbs China’s maritime expansionism, the critical importance of its semi-conductor industry, giving confidence to its East Asian allies about US commitment to the security of the region, the credibility of its Indo-Pacific strategy and, not the least, to warn China against taking advantage of the conflict in Europe to apply military pressure on Taiwan in pursuance of its reunification agenda. It would not be entirely right to treat Pelosi’s Taiwan visit as her personal initiative, as an extension of her long record of targeting China on human rights issues, in particular her support for the Dalai Lama and Tibetan rights. The separation of powers in the US can be cited to explain why the … [Read more...] about Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit: Time to Counter China’s Extravagant and Illegal Territorial Claims
Pelosi wraps Asia trip leaving Biden, Taiwan, allies, China in tougher spot
As Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spends the final hours of her high-profile Asia tour, she prepares to leave behind a region on the verge of crisis with President Joe Biden , Taiwan, U.S. allies and China all in a more difficult position than when she first arrived, according to former U.S. officials. Pelosi's trip made headlines and stirred international tensions for nearly a month before it began, as media leaks revealed she was planning to make a stop in Taiwan, a self-ruling island claimed by China. The White House declined to endorse the trip, and Beijing repeatedly promised a severe reaction, which is now playing out in the form of live-fire exercises by the People's Liberation Army surrounding Taiwan, as Pelosi makes her exit from the region. Max Baucus, who served as U.S. ambassador to China under former President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2017, told Newsweek that Pelosi's trip "was a mistake" and "ill-advised." "Bottom line, the U.S. foreign policy with … [Read more...] about Pelosi wraps Asia trip leaving Biden, Taiwan, allies, China in tougher spot
Seoul Asks Beijing to Help with Security on Korean Peninsula
August 10, 2022 12:20 Foreign Minister Park Jin met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Qingdao on Tuesday and asked him to help maintain peace and security on Korean Peninsula. Park is the first minister in the Yoon Suk-yeol government to visit China. The two apparently discussed a wide range of issues, including the U.S.' Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery stationed in South Korea, Seoul's participation in a U.S.-led semiconductor alliance and cross-straits tensions heightened by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan. "We must adhere to a win-win strategy and protect stable supply chains," Wang said, voicing displeasure at the U.S.' Chip 4 alliance and other polices to reduce dependence on China. Park said, "Peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula faces unprecedented threats. We ask China to play a constructive role so that North Korea will choose dialogue instead of provocations." But Wang rejected censure over Beijing's … [Read more...] about Seoul Asks Beijing to Help with Security on Korean Peninsula
Nancy Pelosi Departs Taiwan with State Honor, Says China’s Tantrum over Visit ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) departed Taiwan late on Wednesday after a 19-hour visit that included visits with that country’s legislature and President Tsai Ing-wen – and an ongoing barrage of hateful invective from neighboring China, including live fire drills and threats to shoot down Pelosi’s plane. Pelosi’s is the first visit by an American politician of such high rank to the country in 25 years. America does not recognize Taiwan as a country – a decision made by President Jimmy Carter to appease the Chinese Communist Party – despite its clear status as a sovereign nation independent of Beijing. The Communist Party claims Taiwan as a rogue province and dismisses Tsai’s government as an illegitimate “separatist” organization. Beijing also does not maintain any diplomatic ties to a country that recognizes Taiwanese statehood. Pelosi, in a Washington Post column on her visit and several statements and remarks throughout her trip, emphasized that she did not … [Read more...] about Nancy Pelosi Departs Taiwan with State Honor, Says China’s Tantrum over Visit ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’
Hayward – Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit Shows Politicians Can No Longer Ignore Americans’ Concerns About China
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) visit to Taiwan, completed in defiance of belligerent threats from the hideous regime in Beijing, drew genuine bipartisan support from U.S. lawmakers and voters alike. Even in a time of deep political divisions, with a potentially earthshaking midterm election coming up, Americans are united in their concerns about the new Evil Empire and its malignant influence upon the freedom, health, and security of the Western world. A considerable number of sitting Republican legislators and former Trump administration officials expressed public support for Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The GOP caucus was far more vocally supportive of Pelosi than the perpetually befuddled Biden administration, even though President Joe Biden ostensibly campaigned on standing up to Communist China. “What is the Pentagon thinking when it publicly warns against Speaker Pelosi going to Taiwan? If we are so intimidated by the Chinese Communists we can’t even protect … [Read more...] about Hayward – Pelosi’s Taiwan Visit Shows Politicians Can No Longer Ignore Americans’ Concerns About China
