SPD Chief Adrian Diaz penned the letter Wednesday, decrying the exclusion of his department and arguing that many members of the police in Seattle are proud members of the LGBT community and deserve a spot in the parade. "The executive board’s decision … has been met with sadness by SPD’s more than 100 LGBTQIA+ officers, commanders and civilians, many of whom proudly walked in the parade annually … [Read more...] about Seattle police, Pride organizers clash over banning officers at parade

Amazon providing $23M for affordable housing in Seattle
Amazon said Thursday it is providing $23 million to help minority-led organizations build or preserve more than 500 new affordable housing units in Seattle — the latest spending by a tech company to ease a severe housing crunch the industry has helped create. The commitment comes from Amazon's Housing Equity Fund, a $2 billion initiative launched in January 2021. The fund has so far invested more than $1.2 billion to create or preserve over 8,000 affordable homes across three regions where the company has offices: the Puget Sound in Washington state; Arlington, Virginia; and Nashville, Tennessee. "When our city’s businesses and private partners step up, like Amazon is doing through this significant investment, we can accelerate progress addressing difficult challenges like housing affordability,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said in a news release announcing the investment. Cherry Cricket property in Cherry Creek changes hands for $25M
Cherry Cricket’s real estate in Cherry Creek has sold to a Denver developer with family ties to the restaurant’s leadership. Alpine Investments said in a statement Friday that it and a group of “primarily local investors” had purchased the restaurant’s property at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Clayton Street. Alpine paid $25.2 million, according to public records. The deal included two parcels, which in addition to Cherry Cricket are home to a tailor and Forget Me Not, a cocktail bar from restaurateur Juan Padro. The properties were sold by an affiliate of Seattle-based Unico Properties, which purchased them in 2015 for a combined $13.8 million from Breckenridge-Wynkoop LLC, Cherry Cricket’s parent company, records show. The restaurant group, whose other brands include LoDo’s Wynkoop Brewing Co. and the recently closed Ale House at Amato’s in LoHi, should have a good relationship with its new landlord. Alpine Investments is led by Churchill Bunn and David Pietsch III. Bunn … [Read more...] about Cherry Cricket property in Cherry Creek changes hands for $25M

COVID in California: San Francisco urges booster shots for kids 5-11
The coronavirus pandemic is “not over anywhere until it’s over everywhere,” the head of the World Health Organization says — and it’s “most certainly not over.” People who work as political signature gatherers found a new way to make a buck during the pandemic: pop-up coronavirus test sites. ‘Support LG TV’: Desi Comic’s Bit on Bisexual People Shoots Down Stereotypes With Humour
We’re almost to the end of Pride month, but as the years roll by, how much progress we’ve made as a society when it comes to doing better by the queer community is a question that continues to haunt. Comedian Swati Sachdeva has found a way to address the misinformation shrouding the bisexual community in a stand-up bit that is going viral on social media. Her wry comedy taking a dig at the woefully little amount of knowledge that most of Indian society possesses about people of the bisexual orientation has become wildly popular. From someone only knowing the L and G of “LGBTQ” (if that) and thinking the “B” stood for “bohot saare lesbian gay”, to a guy proudly proclaiming his support for “LG TV” and apparently believing in his slip of tongue, Sachdeva’s bit takes on stereotypes against the LGBTQ community and shoots them down with humour. It also includes jokes on people equating bisexuality with wanting to do both commerce and science.
