COMMENTARY Five takeaways from Super Bowl LIII, a 13-3 win over the Rams that gives the Patriots six championships since 2001, three in the past five seasons, and gives Boston cause for its 12th pro sports title parade in the past 17 years… BELICHICK GETS HIS REDEMPTION When he walked off the field 364 nights earlier, not wanting to watch the victor’s confetti fall on the other guys, Bill Belichick strode into uncharted territory. His team seemed to be in turmoil, with dissension at the highest level of the ranks, and maybe the greatest defensive mind in football history had just given up 40 points to a backup quarterback in the Super Bowl. Compounding that disappointment was the as-yet unexplained decision to bench cornerback Malcolm Butler. For the first time in this historic run, questions had arisen about whether Belichick had lost something. Lost the team, lost control of the operation, lost his step-ahead command of the game. Sunday night he answered every last doubt. … [Read more...] about 5 takeaways from the Patriots’ history-making Super Bowl win over the Rams

Now that the New England Patriots are officially heading to Minneapolis to play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4, Patriots fans can turn their attention to some of the questions surrounding this year’s Super Bowl entertainment. Namely, who is performing during the halftime show, and will that show live up to the one put on by the Patriots and Eagles? With New England playing in their third Super Bowl in four years, Patriots fans have seen plenty of big names grace the Super Bowl halftime stage. Lady Gaga performed a lengthy set at Super Bowl LI in 2017 that one Atlanta Falcons player blamed for the team’s collapse against the Patriots, while Katy Perry (with assists from Missy Elliott, Lenny Kravitz, and Left Shark) sang at Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 before the Patriots finished off the Seattle Seahawks. Here’s everything we know about the performers that will take the stage for Super Bowl LII, including who will perform at halftime, who will sing the … [Read more...] about Here’s who’s performing at Super Bowl LII
Combine fatigue and apathy and you’ve got the recipe for the Super Bowl LIII ticket market. In New England, there’s a lot of “been there, done that, spent that” after nine Super Bowl appearances in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era. In Los Angeles, there’s a whole lot of, “The Rams? When did they get back?” “This is almost the worst possible combination of teams,” ticket reseller Michael Lipman told Sports Illustrated. “There’s no fan base in L.A. Though there is a ‘Tom Brady’s last hurrah’ situation that is attracting a number of people. But other than that, there’s no draw.” Lipman told SI that upper deck seats were going for about $3,500 as of Thursday. According to Yahoo Finance, that’s already about $500 to $1,000 lower than the normal get-in price at this time. And the game is still more than a week away. “In a normal year, Super Bowl ticket prices on resale sites spike … [Read more...] about What NFL experts are predicting for the 2019 Super Bowl

In case you hadn't heard yet this offseason, repeating as champions in the NFL isn't easy. As you probably know by now, there hasn't been a repeat Super Bowl champion since the 2003 and 2004 New England Patriots. Getting to the top of the NFL is hard, and staying there can be even harder. However, one of the odd notions this offseason has been that the reigning Super Bowl winning Philadelphia Eagles are going to experience an unexplained "Super Bowl hangover." That phrase may mean different things to different people, but to me it means that the team is going to crap the bed in some mysterious way. In a piece for ESPN, Mike Sando asked executives from across the league to pick out flaws for all 32 teams, with direct quotes from insiders. It's well done by Sando. Here's what the unnamed executive said about the Eagles. "I'm worried about a Super Bowl hangover. The defense got older, the quarterback has to prove he can be what he was, the dynamics in the locker room changed and then you … [Read more...] about ‘Super Bowl hangover’: Fact or myth?
