New Zealand Flood Recovery Estimated to Take ‘Years’

August 19, 2022 by www.news18.com

A New Zealand city devastated by flooding will take years to recover, the mayor said on Friday, as hundreds more homes were evacuated. The Pacific nation has been lashed by wild weather with the Nelson-Tasman district on the South Island bearing the brunt after 75 centimetres (29 inches) of rain reportedly fell over three days. Several streets in the city of Nelson were flooded after the local river, the Maitai, burst its banks. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese said the damage to roads and the city’s infrastructure will “take years, not months” to repair. She added that it was “critical” Nelson’s residents conserve water as the city’s supply was disrupted by a landslide that damaged the main line from the local reservoir. On a visit to witness the damage, New Zealand’s Minister for Emergency Management Kieran McAnulty pledged $200,000 ($125,000) of aid and confirmed more than 400 homes have now been evacuated in Nelson, where a state of emergency remains in place. He added that … [Read more...] about New Zealand Flood Recovery Estimated to Take ‘Years’

August 18, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

The human remains of two young children have been found in two abandoned suitcases that were bought at an auction in New Zealand, police have confirmed. Detective Inspector told reporters on Thursday that the children were 5 to 10 years old when they died and had most likely been deceased for several years. Police opened a homicide investigation on Aug. 11 after a family in Manurewa, South Auckland, bought the suitcases in an online auction of abandoned goods left at a storage facility. The family discovered the remains when they opened the suitcases after taking them home. Police say the family is not connected to the deaths. According to the New Zealand Herald newspaper , a neighbor of the family who was there when the auctioned items were unloaded from a trailer said that there were also toys, prams and a walker. Faamanuia could not confirm if police had spoken to the previous owner of the storage unit, but said police were working with Interpol and overseas … [Read more...] about New Zealand family discovers remains of two children in abandoned suitcases

FEMA declares new strategy to engage Native American tribes

August 18, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has developed a new strategy to better engage with hundreds of Native American tribes as they face climate change-related disasters, the agency announced Thursday. FEMA will include the 574 federally recognized tribal nations in discussions about possible future dangers from climate change. It has earmarked $50 million in grants for tribes pursuing ways to ease burdens related to extreme weather. Tribal governments will be offered more training on how to navigate applying for FEMA funds. The new plan calls for tribal liaisons to give a yearly report to FEMA leaders on how prepared tribes are. “We are seeing communities across the country that are facing increased threats as a result of climate change," FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said in a conference call with media. “What we want to do in this strategy is make sure that we can reach out to tribal nations and help them understand what the potential future threats are going to be.” … [Read more...] about FEMA declares new strategy to engage Native American tribes

Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker

August 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Ukraine Thursday as the most likely peacemaker in a war that has pitted NATO and the European Union firmly against Russia. Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western city of Lviv, with the nascent UN-Turkish-facilitated Black Sea grain export deal likely top of the agenda. The Turkish president may also be carrying a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin , who he met in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi earlier this month. Erdogan—now needed by both Ukraine and Russia—may yet play a key role in any eventual ceasefire, though for now an end to the fighting looks unlikely. In the meantime Erdogan—ambitious, opportunistic, and pragmatic—will deal with both sides, seeking to stabilize its region, its beleaguered economy, and grow its international influence. "Turkey is trying to find a middle road," said Fatih Ceylan, … [Read more...] about Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker

Who is Sanna Marin? 34-year-old Finnish lawmaker to become world’s youngest prime minister

December 9, 2019 by www.newsweek.com

A 34-year-old Finnish lawmaker is set to become the world's youngest prime minister. Transportation minister Sanna Marin will take charge of a coalition government after being selected by her Social Democratic Party to replace outgoing Antti Rinne, the BBC reported . Rinne quit as prime minister after one party in the coalition government said it had lost confidence in him due to the way he had handled a postal strike. Marin will likely be sworn in this week, becoming the youngest prime minister in Finlands's history, and the youngest currently in office around the world, beating New Zealand's Jacinda Ardern, 39, and Ukraine's Oleksiy Honcharuk, 35. She is the third female in the country's history to be selected for the top job. "We have a lot of work ahead to rebuild trust," Marin told reporters after narrowly winning her party's vote ahead of runner-up Antti Lindtman. Marin will head a center-left coalition of five parties—all of whom are led by women under the age of 35, … [Read more...] about Who is Sanna Marin? 34-year-old Finnish lawmaker to become world’s youngest prime minister

Make warning labels on food packets compulsory, govt. urged

August 17, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) on Wednesday launched a signature campaign with the support of other organisations and members of civil society, demanding the government to enforce stringent front-of-pack labelling (FoPL) regulations for processed food. At a conference organised by CAG here, S. Saroja, executive director of the organisation, said that processed food packets should carry clear and simple warning labels indicating the presence of high salt, sugar and fat. The labelling should be done in such a way that it will cut across the barrier of multiple languages and easily understood by even those who cannot read. She pointed out how the draft FoPL regulations formulated by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in 2018 had been shelved and discussions on it resumed only last year. Highlighting that FSSAI was inclined towards the idea of health star rating (HSR) design instead of labels with appropriate information, she said that HSR failed to … [Read more...] about Make warning labels on food packets compulsory, govt. urged

Superman, whales and pigs took to the skies, as kite fliers participated at the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival

August 17, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Given the weight of the kites, many of the participants tied their strings to sand bags, to avoid battling the strong tugs of these kites. Ashok attached the strings of his kite to a belt around his body, so his arms could rest during the long hours of showmanship. The three-day festival showcased over 124 kites from participants across India, Thailand and the US. “Thirty-one thousand people visited the event,” says Benedict Savio who co-organised the event with Tamil Nadu Tourism. It was a challenging feat to put together, he adds. Considering it was the first edition, there were some hiccups including a cancelled workshop. Anupama Joseph, who took her child and three friends for the event, says that while the kites were beautiful, the event could have done with more covered areas. “At night there were a few music performances but during the day there was not much other than just looking at the kites and food stalls,” says Anupama, who stayed for an hour. “I was hoping there would … [Read more...] about Superman, whales and pigs took to the skies, as kite fliers participated at the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival
