Donald Trump would have been impeached for a third time if it was found that a suspected foreign surveillance balloon had entered U.S. airspace for several days while he was in office, according to the former president's eldest son. Donald Trump Jr. has once again weighed in on the spy saga involving an alleged Chinese balloon. The balloon was shot down by a U.S. fighter jet on Saturday, February 4, off the coast of South Carolina, having first entered U.S. airspace in Alaska on January 28 and later spotted flying over Montana. The Pentagon said it had to wait until the balloon was over open water until it attempted to take it down over fears about falling debris landing on civilian areas. The delay in shooting down the balloon resulted in criticism of President Joe Biden from Republican figures. Trump Jr., who was one of those who previously suggested that civilians themselves try shoot down the balloon flying several miles in the air themselves, said that his father … [Read more...] about Trump would have been impeached over same spy balloon failures, says junior

Trump Will Never Fear the GOP, but It’s Still Terrified of Him
Talk about pathetic. The state of the Republican Party is such that a recent article in Politico quoted a Republican strategist in Arizona as saying , “the party may have to die to be reborn.” Even if this comment was specifically aimed at the dysfunctional Arizona GOP , it is not an original thought . Is the Party of Lincoln salvageable, or do we have to destroy the village to save it? In a rational world, we wouldn’t have to slash and burn any party. A healthy free market incentivizes organizations to compete for customers—or die. Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections, but show no signs of changing. We are a couple of months removed from the disappointing November midterm elections where Trumpism was an obvious drag , and I have already seen enough to conclude that Republicans haven’t learned anything from the dismal results. The feedback loop isn’t just kinked; it’s broken. The most recent … [Read more...] about Trump Will Never Fear the GOP, but It’s Still Terrified of Him
Trump to Withdraw Nomination of Climate Skeptic as Top Environmental Adviser
Want the latest climate news in your inbox? You can sign up here to receive Climate Fwd: , our new email newsletter. WASHINGTON — The Trump administration plans to withdraw its nomination of Kathleen Hartnett White, a climate change skeptic, to lead the Council on Environmental Quality, a White House official said. President Trump in October appointed Ms. White, a former Texas environmental regulator who has said that carbon dioxide should be considered the “gas of life” rather than a pollutant, to be the White House senior environmental adviser. Carbon dioxide emissions contribute to global warming. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved Ms. White on a party-line vote, but her nomination languished at the end of 2017. That was in part, lawmakers acknowledged, because of Ms. White’s performance at her hearing in which she not only espoused controversial views on climate change but also stumbled over science questions. When Senator Ben … [Read more...] about Trump to Withdraw Nomination of Climate Skeptic as Top Environmental Adviser
Poll: 41% Say Personal Finances Deteriorating Under Joe Biden
Forty-one percent of American families say their financial position has worsened since President Joe Biden assumed office — the worst result in 37 years, according to a Sunday ABC News/ Washington Post survey. With nearly 40-year-high inflation crushing American families in 2022, 41 percent of Americans say their personal financial health has deteriorated since Biden assumed office in January 2021. Just 16 percent said their financial health was “better off” under Biden. By comparison, 13 percent of Americans said they were worse off financially during the first two years under former President Donald Trump, while 25 percent said they were “better off.” Sunday’s polling data revealed the worst result for the survey since 1986 when the phrase “better off” became popular under the Reagan administration. The poll sampled 1,003 adults from January 27 to February 1 with a 3.5 point margin of error. Biden’s messaging surrounding the economy has been unclear in recent … [Read more...] about Poll: 41% Say Personal Finances Deteriorating Under Joe Biden
Club for Growth Distances Itself Further From Trump
WASHINGTON — The Club for Growth, a conservative anti-tax group that spent nearly $150 million in the past two election cycles, has invited a half-dozen potential Republican presidential candidates to its annual donor retreat next month — but not Donald J. Trump. In a meeting with reporters on Monday, David McIntosh, president of the group, said that Republican chances of winning back the White House next year would be diminished if Mr. Trump were once again at the top of the ticket and that he hoped to introduce Republican donors to other possibilities. “The party should be open to another candidate,” Mr. McIntosh said, suggesting that Republicans had already lost too many elections with Mr. Trump as the face of the party. Mr. Trump and the Club for Growth, which is based in Washington, were frequent foils during the 2022 midterms, backing opposing candidates in some high-profile primary contests, including Senate races in Ohio and Pennsylvania. When the group started … [Read more...] about Club for Growth Distances Itself Further From Trump
N.Y. Attorney General Seeks to Hold Trump in Contempt
The New York State attorney general, Letitia James, filed a motion on Thursday asking a judge to hold Donald J. Trump in contempt for failing to turn over documents in her civil investigation into his business activities. The request by lawyers in Ms. James’s office, which was filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, said that the former president had declined to turn over documents that the attorney general had sought in eight requests. The filing also asked the judge to fine Mr. Trump $10,000 a day until he turns over the materials. The filing cited a response from Mr. Trump’s legal team arguing that the attorney general’s requests were “grossly overbroad, unintelligible, unduly burdensome” and did not “adequately” describe the requested materials. In a statement Thursday evening, Mr. Trump criticized the investigation as a “witch hunt” being used by Ms. James for political gain. He described the investigation and others before it as “an attempt to silence a … [Read more...] about N.Y. Attorney General Seeks to Hold Trump in Contempt
The State of the Union Is Trump’s Biggest Speech. Who Writes It?
[What to expect at Trump’s 2020 State of the Union Address .] WASHINGTON — There are two categories of speechwriters in Washington, but only one of them can survive for long in President Trump’s White House. The first type — of which there are many examples in both parties — is defined by those who have used the coveted role of presidential speechwriter as the jumping-off point for a lucrative career as a political commentator, and seem headed in that direction from the time they arrive at the White House. The second category is personified by little-known aides like Vince Haley and Ross Worthington, the speechwriters who have assembled the State of the Union speech Mr. Trump will deliver Tuesday night with its theme of the “Great American Comeback,” and will give the president all the credit. The annual address to Congress is an odd one in the Trump era because it is generally the only time of year that Mr. Trump consents to acting traditionally presidential, a … [Read more...] about The State of the Union Is Trump’s Biggest Speech. Sotomayor Says Other Justices Buried ‘Heads in the Sand’ Over Abortion Ban
Justice Sonia Sotomayor has condemned the Supreme Court 's refusal to block a law in Texas banning abortions in almost all circumstances, accusing those who voted against the move of opting to "bury their heads in the sand." Sotomayor was one of four judges to write a dissent against the decision after the court voted 5-4 on Wednesday night to refuse to block the extremely restrictive abortion law in the state, which would prohibit the procedure if a " fetal heartbeat " is detected. This typically occurs after around six weeks in to a pregnancy and before most women are unaware that they are pregnant. "The Court's order is stunning," wrote Justice Sotomayor. "Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights and evade judicial scrutiny, a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand." "The Court has rewarded the State's effort to delay federal review of a … [Read more...] about Sotomayor Says Other Justices Buried ‘Heads in the Sand’ Over Abortion Ban
Amid Crises, Biden Offers the World a Choice: My Way, or Trump’s
BALI, Indonesia — President Biden returns home from a week of diplomacy and crisis management in the Middle East and Asia strengthened in his faith that this period of war and economic turmoil calls for his brand of coalition-building politics — reinforcing the leadership differences with his predecessor, Donald J. Trump, just as he announced another White House run on Tuesday. Mr. Biden’s swing through Egypt, Cambodia and Indonesia was buoyed by a cascade of better-than-expected news for Democrats in the midterm elections and punctuated by a nearly three-hour meeting with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, that appeared to ease the rancorous rhetoric between the two increasingly rivalrous economies, the world’s largest. As reports emerged of Russian-made rockets killing two people in Poland, Mr. Biden convened an emergency meeting with NATO and Group of 7 leaders over the latest missile strikes in Russia’s war in Ukraine, declining to speculate on the source until more facts were … [Read more...] about Amid Crises, Biden Offers the World a Choice: My Way, or Trump’s
