Joe Biden not going far enough on Ukraine stance: Ex-general

March 25, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

The Biden administration needs to openly state that it wants Ukraine to "win" in its war against Russia, retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges has told Newsweek . As the battle for Bakhmut in the Donetsk Oblast grinds on, the former U.S. Army Europe commanding general told Newsweek that the "liberation of Crimea" would be the "decisive" part of the war, but believes it would require a more overt declaration by the U.S. about a Ukrainian victory. "You could kill every Russian within 200 kilometres of Bakhmut and it would not change the strategic outcome, but you liberate Crimea and then I think you completely change the entire strategic context," he said. Hodges has consistently argued that Kyiv should be provided with all the weapons it needs to retake Crimea and said that Ukrainians will never feel secure or able to rebuild their economy while Moscow occupies the peninsula Vladimir Putin illegally annexed in 2014. The weapons could include ATACMS , (Army Tactical … [Read more...] about Joe Biden not going far enough on Ukraine stance: Ex-general

In a Roman Tomb, ‘Dead Nails’ Reveal an Occult Practice

March 25, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

When it came to the treatment of diseases, the ancient Romans had no shortage of magical remedies, several of which involved iron nails. To cure epilepsy, the first-century historian Pliny the Elder advised driving a nail into the ground at the spot where the afflicted person’s head lay at the start of the seizure. The Romans hammered nails into doors to avert plagues and pounded coffin nails into thresholds to keep nightmares at bay. Nails from tombs and crucifixions were sometimes even worn around the neck as talismans against fevers, malaria and evil spells. Recently, archaeologists excavated an unusual set of talismanic nails from a mountaintop necropolis on the outskirts of Sagalassos in southwestern Turkey. In an early Roman imperial tomb, 41 broken nails were found scattered among the cremated remains of an adult male who had lived in the second century A.D. and was buried in situ. Twenty-five of the nails were headless and deliberately bent at right angles; the others were … [Read more...] about In a Roman Tomb, ‘Dead Nails’ Reveal an Occult Practice

It comes as 111 flood alerts and 72 flood warnings have been issued in England , 14 of which have been declared for Somerset. The Environment Agency says the decision to declare a major incident at this time is a “precautionary move and will mean partners become more coordinated and ready to support and take action should the situation worsen.” The recent heavy rain has triggered widespread flooding of the Somerset Levels and Moors, designed to store flood water when the rivers flowing through them burst their banks. Enhanced pumping began on Tuesday evening at Northmoor to reduce the amount of water being stored until river levels allow pumping to resume at Currymoor, which remains full. Recommended Water streams down … [Read more...] about Major incident declared over flood risk in Somerset as 72 warnings issued

A Colonoscopy Alternative Comes Home

January 11, 2021 by www.nytimes.com

Most Americans who are due for a colon cancer screening will receive a postcard or a call — or prompting during a doctor’s visit — to remind them that it’s time to schedule a colonoscopy. But at big health care systems like Kaiser Permanente or the federal Veterans Health Administration, the process has changed. Patients who should be screened regularly (age 50 to 75) and who are of average risk, get a letter telling them about a home test kit arriving by mail. It’s a FIT, which stands for fecal immunochemical test. The small cardboard mailer contains equipment and instructions for taking a stool sample and returning the test to a lab, to detect microscopic amounts of blood. A week or so later, the results show up on an online patient portal. Five to 6 percent of patients will have a positive test and need to schedule a follow-up colonoscopy. But the great majority are finished with colon cancer screening for the year — no uncomfortable prep, no need to skip work or find … [Read more...] about A Colonoscopy Alternative Comes Home

Can Cannabis Class Help the Industry Legalize? Growers Are Doubtful.

March 25, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Standing in a warehouse outside downtown Rochester, Jeffrey Medford watered his cannabis crop under industrial lights. He’s among the many growers who’ve transformed the city’s network of defunct factories into sophisticated indoor farms. Mr. Medford, 58, who has grown cannabis for nearly a decade after a career as a carpenter, would typically be hypervigilant for any slip up that would alert the police to his presence. An outsized electricity bill, for example, could give him away. But since January, Mr. Medford has spoken openly about his operation to a packed online classroom as part of a business mentorship program. In January, New York State regulators launched the Cannabis Compliance Training & Mentorship Program. The goal is to give legacy operators — loosely defined as players in the illicit market before legalization took place in 2021 — the information and skills necessary to stay current with emerging rules. For the first time, growers in the legal … [Read more...] about Can Cannabis Class Help the Industry Legalize? Growers Are Doubtful.

The Budget will bring ‘a lost decade for living standards’ – haven’t we already had one of those?

March 16, 2023 by www.independent.co.uk

Sign up for the View from Westminster email for expert analysis straight to your inbox Get our free View from Westminster email The success of a Budget is measured in how long it takes to collapse. Some arrive pre-collapsed, others collapse in real time. In recent years, success has been if they haven’t collapsed by the time the Office for Budget Responsibility publishes its analysis, revealing in very clear detail all of the horrific things the chancellor deliberately chose not to say. Kwasi Kwarteng ’s mini-Budget didn’t suffer this fate, because he and Liz Truss wisely chose to block the Office for Budget Responsibility from analysing it, and just to be doubly careful, they also sacked the head of the treasury department, who they probably deep down knew was going to tell them that it was going to collapse with pyrotechnic effect but they’d rather not hear. A very successful Budget is one that is still vaguely intact by the time economists, … [Read more...] about The Budget will bring ‘a lost decade for living standards’ – haven’t we already had one of those?

“It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat

March 25, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

One couple's journey to renovate a tired laundromat has captured viral attention as they finally opened their new and improved community hub. Erin Carpenter, 30, and her husband Jonathan, 33, have been renovating properties for years, and while on the hunt for their next project stumbled on a laundromat in their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. "A laundromat was never really on my radar personally, but Jon is a very smart entrepreneur and businessman, he's always been interested in the concept of a laundromat," Carpenter told Newsweek . Married in June 2020, the couple had their own experience of using laundromats during their 4-month honeymoon living on the road in an RV: "We worked remotely, so we sometimes needed to work from laundromats. We took so many photos of them," said Carpenter. "They were places we spent a lot of time and there aren't a lot that are cozy and comfortable." In July 2022, the couple purchased the building in Charleston which had been a … [Read more...] about “It’s a good investment”: Young couple buys and renovates old laundromat
