There, double and triple barriers fortify the westernmost stretch of the nearly 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border as U.S. Border Patrol agents drive SUVs along frontage roads and hover overhead in helicopters. The militarized border touching the communities of Imperial Beach, San Ysidro and Otay Mesa contributed to a 75 percent decline in crossings in the years immediately after fencing was installed in the 1990s, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. The decline mirrors a border-wide decrease.Apprehensions of those suspected of illegally crossing the entire Southwest border experienced an uptick in 2018 over 2017 to nearly 467,000 but remained at less … [Read more...] about Trump says San Diego’s border barrier works, but it pushes migrants to more dangerous areas

The child’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny of detention conditions at Border Patrol stations and CBP facilities that are increasingly overwhelmed by large numbers of families seeking asylum in the United States. According to CBP records, the girl and her father were taken into custody about 10 p.m. Dec. 6 south of Lordsburg, New Mexico, as part of a group of 163 people who approached U.S. agents to turn themselves in. More than eight hours later, the child began having seizures at 6:25 a.m., CBP records … [Read more...] about Report: Girl, 7, dies in Border Patrol custody
U.S. authorities arrested 32 people at a demonstration organized by a Quaker group at the border separating San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico. Border Patrol spokesman Eduardo Olmos said 31 people were arrested for trespassing by the Federal Protective Service at Monday's demonstration and one was arrested by the Border Patrol for assaulting an agent. A photographer for The Associated Press saw about a dozen people being handcuffed after agents warned them to back away from the border wall on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The Border Patrol calls it "an enforcement zone." About 300 people participated in the demonstration organized by the American Friends Service Committee. The rally also was to show support for a caravan of Central American asylum seekers. Protesters and police clashed for the second straight weekend in Paris. Three people were killed and eight others were injured when a truck with passengers riding in the truck bed crashed while fleeing from San Diego Border Patrol agents. Agents were chasing the truck on Interstate 8 near Crestwood Road in Boulevard at around 4:30 p.m. when the truck crashed and overturned. Border Patrol says agents patrolling an unknown stretch of the U.S.-Mexico Border in East San Diego County noticed tire tracks headed north away from the divide, as well as a piece of a vehicle, and alerted other agents. Another agent spotted the truck, which was missing a piece that matched the description of the piece agents found, and tried to pull it over. Top News: Michael Cohen Pleads Guilty for Lying to Congress Julie Jacobson/AP The truck refused to stop and continued eastbound on I-8 before turning around the opposite direction. The CHP said the truck reached speeds above 100 mph. BP agents deployed a spike strip which caused the driver to lose control and roll … [Read more...] about 3 Dead, 8 Injured in Crash After Calif. U.S. Customs and Border Protection suspended all vehicles and pedestrians from passing through the San Ysidro Port of Entry at 11:30 a.m. after the migrants tried to cross on either side of the inspection station. San Ysidro was reopened shortly after 6 p.m., the agency said. Some migrants said they tried crossing only after being denied access to the port of entry where they could claim asylum.
