Soup made from the fins of endangered sharks is still on sale in UK restaurants after Tories reneged on their pledge to ban the cruel trade. A Sunday Mirror probe found the dish on menus in London, Manchester and Liverpool, days after the Government pulled plans from the Queen’s speech which would have banned its sale. To get the fins, fishermen cut them off a live shark, which they throw back into the sea to suffocate on the ocean floor. A quarter of shark species are threatened with extinction, driven mainly by a desire for shark fin soup – a status symbol in some east Asian regions such as Hong Kong. Around 73 million sharks a year are killed for their fins, yet buying and selling it is still legal in the UK. TV’s Steve Backshall, of popular Sky show Shark, said the trade is “up there with rhino horn and ivory as the most senseless and wasteful of all”. Popular Bay Area Cambodian restaurant Nyum Bai suddenly closes
On Friday, popular Cambodian restaurant Nyum Bai closed after five years in Oakland, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another). The Fruitvale restaurant announced the closure on Friday on its Instagram . "A few weeks ago, we decided today will be our last day in our Fruitvale location," read the post from chef-owner Nite Yun. Adelitas management planning new Mexican restaurant in Bonnie Brae
Nathan and Karina Ayala-Schmit have been managing Adelitas on South Broadway since it opened in 2013. And now the couple are ready to forge their own path with a new restaurant called Ni Tuyo at 730 S. University Blvd. in Bonnie Brae, where Brightmarten previously operated for four years before closing in January. “Karina’s brother wanted to get back in the restaurant game, so we spent the last year training him on everything we did at Adelitas,” Nathan said. “Now, we need something to do.” Karina, 33, is the daughter of Silvia Andaya, a former housekeeper who opened Adelitas at 1294 S. Broadway in Platt Park in 2013, cooking recipes from her hometown of Michoacán, Mexico. She then opened La Doña Mezcaleria, a Mezcal-centric cocktail bar with Mexican street food, next door at 13 E. Louisiana Ave. in 2016. Andaya is preparing the menu for Ni Tuyo, which her daughter and son-in-law hope to open in early June. It will have a smaller, more upscale menu than Adelitas, with … [Read more...] about Adelitas management planning new Mexican restaurant in Bonnie Brae
Internet backs lone diner taking up table as angry couple waiting “huffed”
The internet has sided with a woman who upset a couple in a restaurant by eating alone. On Monday, Reddit user Resturant_Conflicts shared the uncomfortable situation on the popular r/AmITheA**hole subreddit. "I have given up on dating but still enjoy date activities," said the 35-year-old: "So once a month I take myself out on a date. I go to the movies, museums and even mini-golf by myself. I always treat myself to a nice lunch or dinner around 3–4pm, after the lunch rush but before the dinner rush so I have plenty of time to enjoy my food." She explained that she always finds a new restaurant to try for her "self-dates," and on Saturday found a hidden Mediterranean place with great decor and music, and only around seven tables. "When I got there only one other table was occupied and I sat in the only two-seater table," she wrote: "The waiter got me my drink and I had just put in my order when a couple walked in. They looked around the small restaurant, saw me at the only … [Read more...] about Internet backs lone diner taking up table as angry couple waiting “huffed”
Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc-run business accused of “ecological vandalism”
A top hotel and restaurant run by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc in England has been accused of "ecological vandalism" - by "destroying" a meadow of wildflowers. Villagers in Great Milton say the owners of Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons have mowed the field for "no reason" - during "No Mow May." Pictures of the meadow before and after show a stark contrast - with the vibrant green field now looking brown and dead - like a "desert." The 10.5 acre (4 hectare) field is often used by dog walkers and villagers, and sits behind the hotel that owns and maintains the land. The restaurant has two Michelin stars and is owned by LVMH, which acquired it from Belmond Ltd in December 2018. The eaterie is run by French chef Blanc, 72, and the group has applied for planning permission to create a new wellness spa, bistro and Raymond Blanc academy on its land. It claims that the mowing was part of necessary and overdue maintenance. But it was criticized for having performed the work during "No … [Read more...] about Celebrity chef Raymond Blanc-run business accused of “ecological vandalism”
Britvic reveals profits hike as it raises prices to combat costs
Soft drinks giant Britvic has seen half-year profits jump nearly 50% as it hiked prices to offset inflation, but cautioned over falling consumer spending amid the cost-of-living crisis. The Robinsons squash and J2O maker reported pre-tax profits of £59.3 million for the six months to March 31, up from £39.8 million a year earlier. Revenues jumped 18.5% to £719.3 million and the group said drinks bought for “immediate consumption” had now bounced back ahead of pre-pandemic levels, while trade overall across bars and restaurants recovered further. Russians line up for McDonald’s as it leaves, mirroring when chain opened
Long lines are forming outside of McDonald's restaurants in Russia ahead of the company's nationwide exit, mirroring a time when eager consumers first gathered for the fast-food chain's arrival in Moscow over 30 years ago. McDonald's announced this week that it will sell its 850 restaurants in Russia due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The company temporarily shut down its businesses due to the conflict in March, but it said Monday that its overall presence in Russia is no longer "consistent with McDonald's values." The move marks the first time the fast-food chain has ever left a major global market. The company said it will seek a local buyer who will employ its 62,000 workers currently in Russia, and that it will continue to pay those employees until a deal is made. However, the new owner will no longer be able to use the McDonald's name, logo, branding or menu. Across social media, videos have emerged showing Russians lined up to grab a final meal at one the few restaurants … [Read more...] about Russians line up for McDonald’s as it leaves, mirroring when chain opened
Moscow McDonald’s French Fries go Russian as ruble tumbles
U.S. sanctions have already shaken Russia's currency and markets but now the economic turmoil is set to engulf one of the American experiences most readily availble to Russians—eating at McDonald's. The latest round of sanctions against Kremlin-friendly businesses caused turmoil on the Moscow stock exchange earlier this month and tanked the ruble , in a drop resembling the start of Russia's economic crisis in 2014. One unintended casualty of sanctions may be the supply of french fries in McDonald's restaurants across Russia, who all import potatoes from abroad, as local ones have never been up to scratch. "There was no potato which would suit us in terms of quality—color, taste, size—these are all the details that are important for us," Khamzat Khasbulatov, chairman of McDonald's Russia, told Reuters . The fast food chain has been operating in Russia since 1990, and has repeatedly moved to substitute some ingredients with local produce, but with potatoes this has proven … [Read more...] about Moscow McDonald’s French Fries go Russian as ruble tumbles
Toddler orders 31 McDonald’s cheeseburgers while playing with mom’s phone
The conveniences of modern life led to a sizable headache for one Texas family after their toddler ordered dozens of burgers while playing with his mother's phone. Kelsey Burkhalter Golden, of Kingsville, Texas, relayed the story to her Facebook followers on Sunday, writing that her 2-year-old son, Barrett, ordered 31 cheeseburgers from a local McDonald's via DoorDash after taking her phone to play around. The post was accompanied by a photo of the boy sitting next to a pile of cheeseburgers with a smile on his face. "I have 31 free cheeseburgers from McDonald's if anyone is interested," Golden wrote in the post. "Apparently my 2 yr old knows how to order doordash." Golden delved further into the comedic incident with local station, KHOU 11 News. As she explained, she had been aware that Barrett had taken the phone and was playing around with it. Only later once she got it back did she realize that he had gotten up to more than she expected. "My son was playing with my … [Read more...] about Toddler orders 31 McDonald’s cheeseburgers while playing with mom’s phone
