Koovappady panchayat in Ernakulam district is preparing to using solar energy at least partially as part of efforts to shift from the conventional energy use and to create awareness among people on the use of renewable sources of energy. In the first phase, the panchayat expects to shift most of its office operations to solar power, said panchayat president Mini Babu on Wednesday. The first phase of the solar energy shift will see the panchayat invest around ₹4.95 lakh in the project. It is learnt that the local body uses energy worth around ₹11,000 from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) every two months. The electricity bill can be considerably reduced once the solar energy panels are set up. The initial effort is to establish around 8 kW of power. The solar power project is based on a grid project through which the panchayat will feed electricity generated through its facility to the KSEB grid, and the local body will be able to utilise an equal amount of energy from … [Read more...] about Koovappady panchayat in Ernakulam to shift to solar power

EU Passes Carbon Curb Bill that will Result in ‘Poverty for Generations’
Despite the fact the bloc is wrestling with a crippling energy crisis, the EU has passed legislation putting further curbs on carbon emissions. Having initially failed to pass the European parliament two weeks ago in part thanks to Conservative and Populist politicians voting against the measure, the EU has now managed to push through a further climate crazy clampdown on carbon emissions. Being implemented despite the fact that many nations within the union are experiencing a crippling energy crisis, the move has been described by one MEP as condemning the EU to generations of poverty. Part of the bloc’s “ Fit for 55 ” plan to cut union-wide emissions by 55 per cent, the initially rejected measures passed on Wednesday significantly expand the EU’s regime of carbon trading, something critics claim will result in higher costs for both individuals and businesses. “By passing the Fit for 55 legislation, the European Parliament has condemned the European Union to have no … [Read more...] about EU Passes Carbon Curb Bill that will Result in ‘Poverty for Generations’
Extreme ocean temperatures cause record bleaching of New Zealand sea sponges
Extreme ocean temperatures have led to what scientists believe is the largest ever bleaching of sea sponges in New Zealand . Researchers last month warned the issue could rapidly become widespread after discovering mass bleaching for the first time off the country’s southern coastline. The sponges, which should have been a healthy, velvety brown, had been bleached white and were spotted under the water in Breaksea Sound and Doubtful Sound fjords in Fiordland. At the time, Prof James Bell, a marine ecologist from Victoria University of Wellington, estimated hundreds of thousands of the sponges had been bleached. However investigations at six more sites in Fiordland since then have found millions of sponges have been affected. Legal Expert: Mediation Do’s and Don’ts
Mediation can be a cost-effective means of resolving disputes without going to trial. Parties meet with a professional, neutral mediator to attempt to resolve the claim. Mediators have no authority to make any determination or force a settlement. Their job is to facilitate discussion that may lead to an acceptable resolution. Although most mediations are voluntary, United States courts expect (or formally require) that the parties mediate before they take up courtroom time for trial. There is a small industry of professional mediators (usually retired judges or lawyers) who make their living mediating, often under the auspices of a service provider such as JAMS. Most mediators charge between $5,000 and $50,000 per day. Although there is no shortage of mediators, there is a limited number of those who are truly skilled; they are usually booked several months in advance. The type of mediator you want will depend on the parties, the strength of the case, the issues involved and the … [Read more...] about Legal Expert: Mediation Do’s and Don’ts
High oil and gas costs may be forever, top banker warns
Former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz has warned that Canadians may need to adjust to permanently higher oil and gas prices. During an interview this week on CBC News Network's Power & Politics , Poloz argued the inflation rate in Canada may fall but oil and gas prices may remain high . "The main thing is all this is is a price increase. If oil prices and energy costs stay roughly where they are today then, of course, over the next 12 months what we would get is a gradual unwinding of that effect in the inflation rate," Poloz said. "That is really important for people to bear in mind. The fact is most of it really is nothing we can control and it will be transitory." Despite his claim that inflation in Canada would decrease, he explained why this may not be true for gas and oil. "We might have to pay more for oil and gas forever," Poloz said, according to the CBC report. "And if that's the case, that's not inflation. It's a higher price that we'll have to pay … [Read more...] about High oil and gas costs may be forever, top banker warns
