Russian commanders dismissed over “poor performance” in Ukraine: U.K. MoD

August 7, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Russian officials have fired several commanders following the nation's "poor performance" in Ukraine, according to the U.K.'s Ministry of Defence (MoD). The MoD said in a Sunday, August 7, tweet that at least six Russian commanders had been dismissed since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion earlier this year. It said: "The poor performance of Russia's armed forces during its invasion of Ukraine has been costly for Russia's military leadership, highly likely resulting in the dismissal of at least six Russian commanders since the start of hostilities in February 2022." Putin's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had originally stated the goal of his invasion was to "ensure the demilitarization of Ukraine" and "ensure the denazification of Ukraine." Western leaders dismissed the Kremlin's rationale and many nations and organizations, including the U.S., U.K. and European Union , have supported Ukraine financially and with military aid. But while Putin had … [Read more...] about Russian commanders dismissed over “poor performance” in Ukraine: U.K. MoD

Ukraine defense officials targeted in Russian assassination plot: Report

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov and defense intelligence head Kyrylo Budanov were allegedly targeted in a foiled assassination plot by members of Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said in a new report Monday that it was able to prevent the allegedly planned killings that also would have taken aim at "a well-known Ukrainian activist" who was not identified by name. The would-be assassins were purportedly promised rewards of $100,000 to $150,000 per kill, the SSU said. Newsweek was not able to independently verify the report and contacted Russia's defense and foreign ministries for confirmation and comment. Russia's war in Ukraine , which began on February 24, has now raged on for more than five months despite initial beliefs that Russian President Vladimir Putin 's army would be able to secure a speedy victory in his "special military operation." While maps from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) show … [Read more...] about Ukraine defense officials targeted in Russian assassination plot: Report

Russian hacker warns cyberwarfare will turn deadly

August 8, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The founder and former leader of Russian-based hacking group Killnet has stated that cyberwarfare will result in casualties, just days after threats against a major American weapons manufacturer reportedly came to fruition. On Sunday, that hacker, Killmilk, told the Russian news site Gazeta.Ru that he has helped galvanize countless other hackers who "for one reason or another, support Russia in the NWO [New World Order]," pledging to "be a pioneer" if pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian hackers confront one another to the point where deaths occur. "In Russia, I will become a hero, and abroad, a criminal," said Killmilk, who launched Killnet on November 1, 2021. "Soon, I and Killnet will launch powerful attacks on European and American enterprises, which will indirectly lead to casualties. I will do my best to make these regions and countries answer for each of our soldiers," he said, according to an English translation. " A new type of attack " launched on American company Lockheed … [Read more...] about Russian hacker warns cyberwarfare will turn deadly

U.S. refused Ukraine F-16s over Zelensky “scandals”: Russian military expert

August 9, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A Russian military expert has said the United States has started to restrict its military assistance to Ukraine and linked what he believed to be a cooling of Washington's support for Kyiv to the actions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky . The comments by Arsenal of the Fatherland editor Alexei Leonkov come a day after the Biden administration announced another $1 billion in new military aid for Ukraine comprised of rockets, ammunition and arms from the U.S. Department of Defense stocks. On Tuesday, Leonkov wrote on his Telegram channel about the U.S.-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which are a game-changing weapon for Kyiv that have allowed its forces to hit Russian command centers and ammunition depots. But he said that "the United States is beginning to limit the list of future arms supplies to Ukraine." Regarding HIMARS, the U.S. had "planned 20, and delivered 16." "Now they are refusing to supply F-16s, temporarily," Leonkov … [Read more...] about U.S. refused Ukraine F-16s over Zelensky “scandals”: Russian military expert

Russia’s Defense Ministry denied the Saki base on the Black Sea had been shelled and said instead that munitions had blown up there. But Ukrainian social networks were abuzz with speculation that it was hit by Ukrainian-fired long-range missiles. Videos posted on social networks showed sunbathers on nearby beaches fleeing as huge flames and pillars of smoke rose over the horizon from multiple points, accompanied by loud booms. Boris Johnson defends 2018 meeting with ex-Russian spy Lebedev on Italian jaunt

July 26, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Boris Johnson has attempted to defend his meeting with former Russian spy Alexander Lebedev insisting "no Government business was discussed as far as I'm aware". The outgoing Prime Minister reluctantly admitted to MPs earlier this month that he met the Russian oligarch in Italy on April 28 2018 without officials present. He visited Lebedev's castle in Perugia while he was Foreign Secretary, for a weekend-long party after attending a Nato foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels in which he had discussed Russia and security. Writing back to the Commons Liaison Committee who quizzed him on this meeting on July 6 in a bid to provide further detail on the meeting, Mr Johnson said: "At this social event, I also met Evgeny Lebedev’s father. “This was not a formal meeting, nor something that was pre-arranged. Boris Johnson campaigning to be Tory leader and Prime Minister in 2019 “Officials were aware in advance that I was attending the social event." He added: "If a minister … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson defends 2018 meeting with ex-Russian spy Lebedev on Italian jaunt
