The MoD said in a Sunday, August 7, tweet that at least six Russian commanders had been dismissed since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion earlier this year. Putin's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had originally stated the goal of his invasion was to "ensure the demilitarization of Ukraine" and "ensure the denazification of Ukraine." Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov and defense intelligence head Kyrylo Budanov were allegedly targeted in a foiled assassination plot by members of Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said in a new report Monday that it was able to prevent the allegedly planned killings that also would have taken aim at "a well-known Ukrainian activist" who was not identified by name. The would-be assassins were purportedly promised rewards of $100,000 to $150,000 per kill, the SSU said. Newsweek was not able to independently verify the report and contacted Russia's defense and foreign ministries for confirmation and comment. The comments by Arsenal of the Fatherland editor Alexei Leonkov come a day after the Biden administration announced another $1 billion in new military aid for Ukraine comprised of rockets, ammunition and arms from the U.S. Department of Defense stocks. On Tuesday, Leonkov wrote on his Telegram channel about the U.S.-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which are a game-changing weapon for Kyiv that have allowed its forces to hit Russian command centers and ammunition depots. But he said that "the United States is beginning to limit the list of future arms supplies to Ukraine." Regarding HIMARS, the U.S. had "planned 20, and delivered 16."
