There is up to six months delay in the delivery of the two Krivak or Talwar-class stealth frigates under construction for the Indian Navy in Russia due to the war in Ukraine. The first frigate is now expected to be delivered by November 2023 and the second one by April 2024, according to Alexey Rakhmanov, Director-General of United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia Earlier, there was about nine-month delay in the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first frigate, Tushil, was launched into water in October 2021. “We see no more than six-month delay basically due to the fact that some equipment which we have ordered has fallen under sanctions... We do not see any sort of manufacturing issues... We don’t expect any further issues. Some catch of the schedule is also expected because we really value our relationship with our customer and we try to shrink the delay due to the obvious force majeure situation starting February this year,” Mr. Rakhmanov told the visiting media at … [Read more...] about Six-month delay in delivery of two stealth frigates by Russia due to war in Ukraine

Bomb threats put tiny Moldova, Ukraine’s neighbor, on edge
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — For tiny Moldova, an impoverished, landlocked nation that borders war-torn Ukraine but isn't in the European Union or NATO, it's been another week plagued by bomb threats. On an overcast day outside the international airport serving Moldova's capital of Chisinau, hundreds of people lined up this week as bomb-sniffing dogs examined the vicinity. That's now a common scene in Europe’s poorest nation as it battles what observers believe are attempts to destabilize the former Soviet republic amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. Since the beginning of July, Moldova has received nearly 60 bomb threats — with more than 15 reported so far this week — at locations ranging from the capital’s city hall, to the airport, the supreme court, shopping malls and hospitals. While no one has yet been charged for the bomb threats, most of which have arrived via email … [Read more...] about Bomb threats put tiny Moldova, Ukraine’s neighbor, on edge
Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan heads to Ukraine Thursday as the most likely peacemaker in a war that has pitted NATO and the European Union firmly against Russia. Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western city of Lviv, with the nascent UN-Turkish-facilitated Black Sea grain export deal likely top of the agenda. The Turkish president may also be carrying a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin , who he met in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi earlier this month. Erdogan—now needed by both Ukraine and Russia—may yet play a key role in any eventual ceasefire, though for now an end to the fighting looks unlikely. In the meantime Erdogan—ambitious, opportunistic, and pragmatic—will deal with both sides, seeking to stabilize its region, its beleaguered economy, and grow its international influence. "Turkey is trying to find a middle road," said Fatih Ceylan, … [Read more...] about Turkey’s Erdogan jostles to be Putin’s partner, Ukraine peacemaker
Photos show U.S., NATO military drills for “combat-readiness” in Europe
NATO has touted exercises in Europe that it says show the military strength and unity of the alliance amid concerns in the bloc that Russia could widen its invasion of Ukraine beyond its borders. In a series of tweets, the U.S. mission to NATO shared images and video of recent drills in Poland , the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Seas , as Moscow continues to portray its invasion of Ukraine as a wider battle with the alliance. "Check out this live-fire exercise with troops, which took place in Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, where America's forward-deployed corps in Europe train with our Allies and partners," one of the tweets said, with four images of military hardware being tested. Another tweet described how ships from the reaction force, NATO Maritime Group Two, had finished exercises in the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas and how alliance members "work every day to ensure strong maritime capabilities to deter aggression" as well as "preserve safety and security of the … [Read more...] about Photos show U.S., NATO military drills for “combat-readiness” in Europe
Vladimir Putin’s forces MUTINY as Russian soldiers refuse to slaughter Ukrainians
The desperate plight of Vladimir Putin's creaking war effort is highlighted in footage showing his own soldiers rebelling. One video shows fighters from the puppet Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) staging a mutiny and refusing to defend the unrecognised Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). They complain of “threats, blackmail, intimidation and deception” to force them to slaughter Ukrainians . The other video parades recruited jail inmates at the frontline in the pro-Putin Wagner private army, after being signed up with a promise of their sentences being wiped. They deny they are “cannon fodder” even though reports suggest hundreds of newly signed up convicts have perished already on the battlefield. Both cases highlight how Putin is desperately short of troops ready to fight in his bloody war in Ukraine after catastrophic losses in his regular forces. The servicemen say 'we're not cannon fodder' after being drafted in to the frontlines of Vladimir Putin's war ( … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s forces MUTINY as Russian soldiers refuse to slaughter Ukrainians
Cost of living: UK facing ‘humanitarian crisis’ if action not taken on energy bills, NHS chiefs warn
The UK is facing a "humanitarian crisis" unless the government takes action to help people with rising energy costs, health chiefs have warned. Families are looking ahead to a grim winter as experts predict the cap on energy bills will hit close to £3,600 per year from October - before rising again in April next year. Surging prices mean people will have to choose between skipping meals to heat their homes or living in poor conditions, the NHS Confederation said in a letter to ministers. This could lead to more people falling ill and seeing their health deteriorate. Matthew Taylor is chief executive of the body, which represents NHS leaders, and was quoted by the BBC and The Times as saying: "The country is facing a humanitarian crisis. "Many people could face the awful choice between skipping meals to heat their homes and having to live in cold, damp and very unpleasant conditions. "This in turn could lead to outbreaks of illness and sickness around the country and … [Read more...] about Cost of living: UK facing ‘humanitarian crisis’ if action not taken on energy bills, NHS chiefs warn
Vladimir Putin offers £13,000 to Russian mums who give birth to 10 children
Vladimir Putin is offering a tidy sum to any mum in Russia who can give birth to 10 children. Suffering a steep population decline , the president is hoping the £13,000 sum will encourage more Russian women to have huge families to address the country's population decline . The new decree was signed by Putin on Monday, August 15. It is a revival of the Soviet-era title of ‘Mother Heroine' brought in by dictator Joseph Stalin following the massive casualties Russia suffered in World War 2. Stalin also introduced the Order of Maternal Glory in third, second and first class. The first class went to mothers who had nine children, while third class went to those who had seven. Moscow covered in poisonous smog as officials fear telling Putin about forest fires
Moscow has been blanketed in thick noxious smog and some fear forest fires were left to rage because officials were too scared to tell Vladimir Putin . Claims say regional officials were too scared to admit to Russian President Vladimir Putin the scale of the forest infernos. The pollution was also made worse because a large number of firefighters were deployed to the war in Ukraine , says state media. A thick cloud of pungent smog descended on the Russian capital as temperatures hit close to 30 degrees centigrade. St Basil’s Cathedral and other landmarks were shrouded in smoke and became absent from the skyline.
