John McCain has sparked a new debate in the Senate over how best to honor his legacy, and a proposal to rename a Senate office building after the late Arizonan is threatening the rare bipartisanship that has been on display in Washington since his passing. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday proposed that one of the three office buildings that house senators and their staffs — the Richard Russell Senate office building — be renamed to the John S. McCain Senate office building. Schumer, who introduced a resolution to do so, along with Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake, argued that while Russell was “a towering figure in the Senate of his day,” he was also “an avowed opponent of civil rights and the architect of the Southern filibuster that long delayed its passage.” “It is … [Read more...] about Proposal to rename Senate office building after McCain stirs backlash

Russell Jr. of Georgia, the only senator to speak against the resolution was Hart, the gentle Michigan Democrat known as “the conscience of the Senate.” Hart did not deny that Russell had been an “impressive and effective” legislator, one of the Senate’s “giant figures.” But rushing to name one of the capital’s major buildings after someone who had just died was a mistake the Senate might later regret. “I thought we had learned,” he said, “that it is unwise to anticipate history’s verdict.” Advertisement Hart’s colleagues ignored his advice. In a rare show of bipartisanship, John McCain’s colleagues paid tribute to the late lawmaker and his legacy Monday on the Senate floor as leaders from both parties fondly recalled the Arizona Republican’s fighting spirit and unwavering dedication to the United States. In his speech before the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., recalled how a “scrappy pilot” who barely graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy became a decorated war hero and one of Washington’s most respected leaders. “America will miss her dedicated son, her stalwart champion, her elder statesman,” McConnell said as McCain’s desk on the Senate floor sat draped in black cloth and adorned with vase of white flowers. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building after late Sen. John McCain, saying that he has always felt there was a more appropriate way to name the building. "As you go through life, you meet few truly great people. John McCain was one of them," the New York Democrat said in a statement Saturday night, just after McCain died, CBS News reports. "His dedication to his country and the military were unsurpassed, and maybe most of all, he was a truth teller — never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare. The Senate, the United States, and the world are lesser places without John McCain." On Sunday, he emphasized that the building would be better named to honor McCain, as the late Arizona senator was an "antidote when he saw bigotry." The building is named for late Sen. Richard Brevard Russell Jr., a Georgia Democrat who was in office from 1933 to 1971. He has been a controversial figure for … [Read more...] about Schumer Wants Russell Senate Office Building Renamed for McCain
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, says he'll introduce a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington for Sen. John McCain, who died at the age of 81 on Saturday after his battle with brain cancer. "As you go through life, you meet few truly great people. John McCain was one of them. His dedication to his country and the military were unsurpassed, and maybe most of all, he was a truth teller — never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare. The Senate, the United States, and the world are lesser places without John McCain," Schumer said in a statement Saturday evening amid news of McCain's passing. Schumer noted that while "nothing will overcome the loss of Senator McCain" he will move to introduce a resolution to rename the Senate office building "so that generations remember him."
