Commissioner Jay Monahan said the PGA Tour can’t win an “arms race” against Saudi-funded LIV Golf when the weapon is money. His response Wednesday was to boost prize money in eight elite events and rely on loyalty and legacy among his players. Monahan delivered another round of stinging criticism against Greg Norman and his rival league. LIV Golf has snagged players who have combined to win nine majors in the past five years, including Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. The latest to sign was Koepka, whose deal with LIV Golf was announced just as Monahan began his first news conference in three months. Koepka won’t play in the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship this week, the PGA Tour announced. “I am not naive,” Monahan said. “If this is an arms race and if the only weapons here are dollar bills, the PGA Tour can’t compete. The PGA Tour, an American institution, can’t compete with a foreign monarchy that is spending billions of dollars in attempt to buy the … [Read more...] about PGA Tour plots strategy to compete with LIV Golf

Tea with benefits: Lessons from the Royal Family
Kolkata is often called the last outpost of the British Empire. Ian Jack once wrote in The Guardian that two things united Kolkata and London — “the first is expensive property and the second is the institution once known as the gentlemen’s club” with dress codes which “while they have done away with cummerbunds, still make the visitor think twice before he sets foot in one.” A friend who belongs to a prestigious gentlemen’s club in London is nowhere as much at home as in their counterparts in Kolkata. He can do Bengal Club, Calcutta Club and Tollygunge Club in one day and be dressed right for all of them. And the office bearers of these stately clubs of Kolkata , tickled pink at the attention from a bona fide Londoner, never fail to roll out the frayed red carpet to welcome him. That this Kolkata has been so nonchalant about the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen feels like a personal snub to Her Majesty. This is a city that created Corona sandesh during the pandemic and Football … [Read more...] about Tea with benefits: Lessons from the Royal Family
Fake name Prince William used so that he could fly under the radar at university
The Royal Family are known all over the world by their long, official titles. The current royals are the descendants from an unbroken sovereign chain which stretches back nearly 1000 years and includes some of the most famous historical figures, from William the Conqueror to Henry VIII. But behind the formality and away from the glaring media spotlight, the royals are just like any other family. They share jokes, buy each other ridiculous presents and even have silly nicknames for one another. While the different names are used for the most part as terms of endearment, there are several examples of them being used to protect the privacy the royals and allow them to be as normal as possible. America Isn’t Ready to Truly Understand the Buffalo Shooting
O ne evening about seven years ago in St. Andrews, Scotland, I was walking home from a long day of doctoral research. Most people out that night were not concluding studies. A scattered few exited the ancient city’s meager collection of pubs and restaurants. That ordinary night shifted when a drunken man stumbled out of one of those bars and spotted my Black body. He presented no manifesto. I have no access to the soul-distorting experiences that led him to look upon me with contempt, but seconds after he saw me, he blurted out that most famous of anti-Black racial slurs. I had never been verbally accosted in a British accent and didn’t know that word was international. I performed the assessment that Black folks have performed for centuries. How much danger am I in? Then I remembered I was in Scotland, and therefore the person probably did not have a gun. So I gave him my best cold stare, ready to defend myself if needed. He apparently performed a similar assessment, thought … [Read more...] about America Isn’t Ready to Truly Understand the Buffalo Shooting
Giuliani Sounds Like He’s Ready to Put His Kid on Mount Rushmore
In a virtual press conference Thursday attended by fewer than 30 people—including the PR consultants hosting the event—former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani compared his son, who is hoping to be elected New York’s GOP candidate for governor next week, to Donald Trump, Teddy Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and…himself. Giuliani, who appeared to encounter brief technical issues when logging onto the sparsely populated Zoom meeting, described Andrew , 36, as “tough as nails,” boasting that his boy had been endorsed by Trump cronies and convicted felon Mike Flynn and Steve Bannon, who was charged with felony fraud in 2021 but pardoned by Trump hours before the ex-president left office. However, Giuliani also said that Trump’s endorsement could potentially be detrimental to Andrew’s already slim chances, claiming that Trump has withheld his blessing out of his own benevolence. In rambling remarks that focused primarily on his own accomplishments running New York City, Giuliani took a … [Read more...] about Giuliani Sounds Like He’s Ready to Put His Kid on Mount Rushmore
