The most telling moment of the Andrew Gillum-Ron DeSantis Florida gubernatorial debate on CNN Sunday night came when moderator Jake Tapper broached the subject of DeSantis' racist comments and actions during the campaign. "[DeSantis] has only continued... to bring attention to the color of my skin," Gillum said. "I have been black all my life." Then the crowd laughed before the candidate finished. "The only color the people of Florida care about is the blue-green algae coming out of the east and west of this state."The second most telling, and certainly the funniest, comment came after DeSantis alleged Gillum has called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a weakening of immigration rules, a statement Politifact Florida has rated half true. DeSantis called Gillum's position: "A wet kiss to the drug cartels." A what? Sunday night's debate was a raucous affair. The family patriarch, Richard M. DeVos Sr., who died last month, founded Amway, a home and health multilevel marketing company that is frequently accused of being a legalized pyramid scheme. But if it was a con, the elder DeVos got away with it and became a billionaire, then repaid America by bankrolling the Republican Party. POLITICS 10/16/2018 03:34 pm ET He has defended the Three-Fifths Compromise around slavery and said ISIS may be recruiting from Black Lives Matter. By Amanda Terkel The morning after Florida’s primaries, Rep. Ron DeSantis ― the state’s newly chosen GOP candidate for governor ― went on national television and used a racist dog-whistle to comment on his opponent. “The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state,” DeSantis said of his Democratic challenger, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who is black. The comment shouldn’t have been that surprising. DeSantis tried to be the most pro-Trump candidate in the GOP primary, even running an ad about how he teaches his kids to love everything about Donald Trump, and the president has used plenty of his own racist dog-whistles. But beyond his embrace of the president, DeSantis has … [Read more...] about Ron DeSantis Rose Trafficking In Racist, Islamophobic Conspiracy Theories
