Jobs Corps task force promises to do more in coming year
When James Silkenat became president of the American Bar Association in August, he identified as one of his top priorities, the creation of a job corps for new lawyers. He announced the formation of the Legal Access Job Corps to tackle the lack of adequate legal representation for disadvantaged communities and the glut of unemployed and underemployed lawyers.On Sunday, during the annual ABA Midyear Meeting, Silkenat and others received a progress report from several state and local organizations that have tried to solve this lawyers gap. The Job Corps task force received testimony from representatives from Chicago, South Dakota, New York, Wisconsin and Maine, who spoke about their programs and proposals, while asking the ABA to continue promoting this issue. The task force vowed to do a better job publicizing the matter, and promised to spend the second half of 2014 examining ways the ABA can play a greater role in financing and supporting these and other programs. An American Bar Association task force has plunged into the work of studying the evolving role of criminal defense lawyers in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2010 decision in Padilla v. Kentucky.The panel has taken on the ambitious task of examining the impact of Padilla on criminal pleas with potential deportation consequences for defendants. FINRA Arbitration Task Force Fails To Reach Consensus On Many Major Issues
The FINRA Dispute Resolution Task Force issued its final report last week, making certain recommendations designed to improve the arbitration process. More notably, however, the Task Force reported that it was unable to reach agreement on a number of more controversial issues, reflecting deep divisions among practitioners in this area.The Dispute Resolution Task Force was formed in June 2014 to consider possible enhancements to the FINRA arbitration and mediation forum in light of the evolving needs of its users. Task Force members represented a number of constituencies and included attorneys who regularly represent investors as well as attorneys representing broker-dealers.
