Seeing is believing. So farmers from Degaon in Satara district have made a film on their land which, they say, will be hard evidence in court of its abounding in crops, trees and irrigation sources — an aspect the government seems to have swept under the carpet to acquire 352.31 hectares in the village for the creation of an industrial sector by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Protesting against the proposed acquisition, the farmers, under the banner of the Bhumiputra Shetkari Sevabhavi Sanstha, have filed a petition in the Bombay High Court. “We raise paddy, wheat, sugarcane, soyabean, pulses and gram, and graze cattle. There are fruit trees and several irrigation schemes. Even those who have dug lakes and wells for personal use have struck water. How then can they say our lands are deserted and non-irrigated,” asks the president of the organisation, Baban Hanmant Ghadge, who himself stands to lose one hectare. Inside UK’s ghost village left empty for 80 years after all residents told to go
A ghost village in the UK has remained eerily empty for nearly 80 years - since residents were kicked out during World War 2. Imber in Wiltshire hasn’t been lived in since 1943 and the isolated area now forms part of the British Army’s training grounds on the Salisbury Plain. The entire civilian population was evicted to provide an exercise area for US troops during World War 2 . On November 1, 1943, with preparations for the Allied invasion of mainland Europe underway, the people of Imber were called to a meeting in the village schoolroom and given 47 days to leave their homes. Villagers were told once the war was over they could return back to their homes as normal, but this never happened, and the village remains under the control of the Ministry of Defence to this day. The village located on Salisbury Plain was evacuated in December 1943 The first documented evidence of Imber’s existence comes from Saxon times, where the village was mentioned in 967. It … [Read more...] about Inside UK’s ghost village left empty for 80 years after all residents told to go
Drowned village where church bells can still be heard rising from mud 80 years later
The eerie remains of a lost village submerged underwater in the 1940s have been making a ghostly reappearance when the weather is particularly hot and dry. The slowly rotting ruins of buildings that were drowned to create the Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire periodically rise from the mud when water levels drop enough. Last reported four years ago, these rare and fascinating exposures offer a glimpse of what the farming community of Derwent used to be like. The village church of St John and St James in the heart of the village, with seating for 140 parishioners, was initially left intact when the evacuated valley was flooded in 1945. The village's tower and spire would regularly be seen emerging way above the surface of the reservoir. Even though the bells were removed, some say the ethereal sound of them tolling can still be heard across the sunken valley where the structure stood until it was deemed a hazard and blown up 75 years ago. The ghostly Derwent church tower … [Read more...] about Drowned village where church bells can still be heard rising from mud 80 years later
Ukrainian troops holding destroyed village believe Russians withdrawing across border
(Note profanity in paragraph 2.) RUSKA LOZOVA, Ukraine (Reuters) - While three of his men heaped dark soil into a chin-high berm to shield their trench, Ohor Obolenskiy gestured on Sunday across sun-dappled fields to a tree-clad ridge line sweeping the nearby horizon. “We can see the Russian positions from here and say, ‘F*** you, Russians,’” the 35-year-old Ukrainian commander joshed in rough English, his grim face creasing into a wide grin. The amalgam of National Guard and volunteers he leads seized Ruska Lozova in fierce fighting on May 8, four days into a counteroffensive that has thwarted Russia’s bid to seize nearby Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. The counter-offensive has been Ukraine's most successful since it expelled Russian troops from the north of the country and the area around the capital Kyiv at the end of March, and signals a new turning point in the battle for the east. For the first week, the troops in Ruska Lozova said, Russian shelling was so … [Read more...] about Ukrainian troops holding destroyed village believe Russians withdrawing across border
