Alameda County was the only Bay Area county that issued a mask mandate in response to a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, and county Health Officer Dr. Nicholas Moss announced Friday that he was ending the rule, effective Saturday, June 25. “Conditions have stabilized following the sustained increases in case reports and hospitalizations we saw throughout May,” Moss said in a statement . “While we expect continued impacts from COVID-19 in the coming weeks and masks remain strongly recommended, it is appropriate to step down from the Health Officer masking Order at this time.” The mandate had been in place since June 3. Other Bay Area counties opted not to join Alameda County in mandating masks again, citing the fact that the highly vaccinated region is well-protected against severe illness and death. Hospitalization numbers in the region did not come anywhere close to the figures seen in the winter omicron surge. When the rule was issued, District 1 Supervisor David … [Read more...] about Alameda County, the only Bay Area county with mask mandate, ends rule

San Mateo County has some of the West Coast’s most polluted beaches
It may be tempting to flock to Bay Area beaches when hot summer weather hits, but beachgoers might want to choose that refuge carefully. Three Bay Area beaches made this year’s list of the top 10 most polluted beaches on the West Coast. All of the beaches that made this year’s “Beach Bummer” list , released today by environmental advocacy group Heal the Bay, are in San Mateo County. Erckenbrack Park was named the second dirtiest beach in the 2021-2022 report, and the Foster City beach appeared on the list for the third straight year. Nearby Marlin Park was included in the top 10 for the second consecutive year, and Lakeshore Park has been among the most polluted five times in the past 10 years. It’s unlikely that these beaches will ever escape unfortunate ratings. While the beaches can be attractive due to their calm, protected waters since each beach is “enclosed,” that also means there is poor water circulation, which can make for bad water quality. The prevalence of these … [Read more...] about San Mateo County has some of the West Coast’s most polluted beaches

Douglas County commissioner candidate’s military record prompts allegations of misrepresenting service
The military record of a Republican candidate for Douglas County commissioner has sparked criticism from political opponents and veterans, with the county’s sheriff breaking with his own party to support the Democrat in the race. On his campaign biography , George Teal, a Castle Rock town council member, touts himself as a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, the 1991 military campaign to expel occupying Iraqi forces from Kuwait. But Teal served in Germany during the Gulf War, never seeing combat. In May, Teal was disqualified from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, with the state’s VFW commander expressing concern in a letter to the Castle Rock mayor that Teal’s characterization on the city website was a “misrepresentation of his actual service.” “He didn’t serve in a combat zone,” Bruce Dolan, the Colorado VFW’s state adjutant and quartermaster, told The Denver Post. “This is a combat veteran’s organization.” Ryan Lynch, a spokesman for Teal, said the candidate was … [Read more...] about Douglas County commissioner candidate’s military record prompts allegations of misrepresenting service

President Biden nominated E. Martin Estrada on Monday to serve as the next U.S. attorney for the Central District of California. Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
L egend says the diver drowned retrieving the pearl. Trapped in a giant Tridacna clam, his body was brought to the surface by his fellow tribesmen in Palawan, a province of the Philippines, in May 1934. When the clam was pried open, and the meat scraped out, the local chief beheld something marvelous: a massive pearl, its sheen like satin. In its surface, the chief discerned the face of the Prophet Muhammad. He named it the Pearl of Allah. At 14 pounds, one ounce, it was the largest pearl ever discovered. Reconstruction in Daniels Park aimed at slowing traffic, boosting wildlands
There’s a swath of open rangeland between Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines where bison roam and the mountain views stretch the length of the Front Range. For all Daniels Park has to offer, though, Douglas County residents who live nearby say increasing traffic, speeding drivers, inconsiderate off-roaders and young partiers mar its beauty and solitude. With these concerns in mind, county and Denver Mountain Parks officials began looking at ways to update and improve the scenic gem in 2008. This summer, a wave of major changes will finally get underway there. Work is expected to begin in September on the first phase of reconstruction of a roughly 2-mile, dirt stretch of Daniels Park Road where it runs through the park. When it is complete next summer, the project will have turned a once straight (if pock-marked and rough) dirt road into a gently winding asphalt drive with native plants alongside it. “The drawings I have seen show that is designed to be a beautiful road through a … [Read more...] about Reconstruction in Daniels Park aimed at slowing traffic, boosting wildlands
