At age 14, Wershe was an FBI informant in Detroit who helped convict a major cocaine trafficking ring but eventually got caught selling drugs himself. His story was the basis of the 2018 film "White Boy Rick" starred Matthew McConaughey, with Richie Merritt in the title role. Aleanna Siacon Detroit Free Press Published 1:52 PM EST Dec 27, 2018 Richard 'White Boy Rick' Wershe Jr. could be getting out of prison a year sooner than expected after serving more than three decades for drug charges in Michigan and racketeering charges in connection with a stolen-car scheme in Florida. According to an updated Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) Inmate Population Detail page, Richard Wershe Jr., 49, is now scheduled to be released Nov. 25, 2020. He initially was scheduled to be released in 2021. Wershe is serving time in the Putnam Correctional Institution for men in East Palatka, Florida, according to FDOC inmate records. After pleading guilty to felony charges for racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering that date to Dec. 13, 1999, Wershe was sentenced in 2006 to five years for each charge.
