Bill to decriminalize psychedelics in California gutted by lawmakers
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Legislation to decriminalize certain psychedelic drugs such as “magic mushrooms,” MDMA, ketamine and LSD was gutted by the California Legislature on Thursday, though the lawmaker who sponsored the bill vowed to reintroduce the measure next year. Senate Bill 519 would have allowed for the possession and personal use of some hallucinogenic drugs, which advocates said would provide a critical mental health tool to treat addiction, PTSD, anxiety and depression, especially for veterans. State Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat, said the bill was an important next step in ending the so-called war on drugs, which has disproportionately incarcerated people of color. The legislation on Thursday passed in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, a gatekeeper panel that sifts through hundreds of bills and decides whether legislation with a fiscal cost to the state will advance to the full Assembly, but was amended to become only a study of the decriminalization proposal. Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
MASK CONFUSION… NY TIMES… DAVID LEONHARDT: A Confusing Message — The C.D.C. recommends indoor masking for the vaccinated, but only in some places. As you can see, most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, as well as much of the West, have only “moderate” or “low” transmission. If that stays true, vaccinated residents in those places can generally remain unmasked, the C.D.C. says. […] Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated appear to be only a modest reason that the number of new cases has been rising, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter. When vaccinated people do get the virus, they are less likely to pass it on to others — and much less likely to get very sick. […] The country was polarized long before Covid. But the C.D.C. has not maximized its chances of being heard, either. That’s the communication problem I mentioned above. Its announcement of the new guidelines was both vague and technical, making it hard for many nonexperts to understand. The agency … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
5 Times Liz Cheney Voted with Democrats in 2021-2022 Term
Five times Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) has broken ranks with Republicans and aided Democrats by voting with Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) anti-America First agenda in term 2021-2022. Cheney, who is up for reelection in the Republican primary on August 16 against Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman, has allied herself with Democrats fighting former President Donald Trump. To maximize her opposition to Trump, she joined Pelosi’s partisan January 6 Committee, which has used its January 6 investigation to oppose the former president. Polls show Cheney is losing to Hageman by 57 points among likely Republican voters and is predicted to lose.“The big story is Liz Cheney is going to get beat,” Brad Coker, managing director of the polling firm Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, stated about his polling data. “That’s a foregone conclusion.” Hageman told Breitbart News that Cheney’s alliance with the establishment uniparty has politically damaged her. “Liz Cheney has lost Wyoming. ‘We Need Help’: DC Mayor Bowser Pleads For A Second Time With Austin To Deploy National Guard For Bused Illegal Migrants
Democrat Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser asked the Pentagon Thursday for a second time to deploy the National Guard to support illegal migrants arriving from the southern border. “The District of Columbia writes to provide additional information to support our July 19 request to deploy the DC National Guard (DCNG) to help prevent a prolonged humanitarian crisis in our nation’s capital resulting from the daily arrival of migrants in need of assistance,” Bowser wrote in her Thursday letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. “We need help from our federal partners as we seek to stabilize and manage our operating environment in this critical moment.” Bowser previously requested the deployment, but Austin rejected the request because it would “negatively impact” the force. The Department of Defense (DOD) confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation receipt of Bowser’s latest letter.
