Mattis Expected to Address Chinese Misbehavior in the South China Sea

· June 1, 2018 ·

SINGAPORE — Although Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to discuss North Korea during his talks with allies and partners at an annual defense conference in Singapore, he is also expected to address the other 800-lb. gorilla in the room — China. During a speech at the annual Shangri La Dialogue, a yearly gathering of officials and experts, Mattis is expected to call out China for its misbehavior in the South China Sea.Within the last month, China deployed anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missile systems, and electronic jammers to land features in the South China Sea which are also claimed by Brunei, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. China deployed these weapons to the land features, despite promising in 2015 in the White House Rose Garden that it would not “militarize” them. China also recently landed a bomber on one of the islands. In response, the Pentagon last week disinvited China from the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC), the … [Read more...] about Mattis Expected to Address Chinese Misbehavior in the South China Sea

Singapore Adds Sentosa to Special Zone for Trump-Kim Summit

· June 5, 2018 ·

Singapore on Tuesday added its southern resort island of Sentosa to a special event area designated for next week's summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the government said. On Monday, the wealthy city-state had declared a central region that is home to its foreign ministry, the U.S. embassy and several hotels, as a special zone from June 10 to 14. In its online gazette, the government said the amended zone included Sentosa and an area of the sea stretching more than 1 km (0.6 mile) off its southwestern shore. A smaller area in the centre of the island that includes the Capella hotel, which media have mentioned as a possible venue for Tuesday's talks, will see a greater police presence. The government has said police would make stricter checks of people and personal belongings and items such as public address systems and remotely piloted aircraft system would be prohibited. There has been no confirmation of the venue for the summit to discuss … [Read more...] about Singapore Adds Sentosa to Special Zone for Trump-Kim Summit

Virtual Singapore project could be test bed for planners

· September 27, 2018 ·

By John Geddie and Aradhana Aravindan SINGAPORE (Reuters) - With the click of a button, Singapore's security forces could soon use a digital version of the city-state to simulate a bomb threat at a sports stadium - and learn how to respond if there was a real attack. Yet officials worry that "Virtual Singapore" - available soon to state agencies before an eventual public rollout - could also aid would-be terror plotters which the government says have their sights set on the wealthy island. This is just one of many security conundrums facing developers of the 3D model that will be fed by big data and could assist in everything from urban planning to disaster mitigation in the city of 5.6 million people. Developers and experts say the scheme is one of the most ambitious of its kind and will be watched by other cities hoping to use new technologies to improve the lives of citizens. "This information will help our daily lives, but it could also fall in the wrong hands and create problems … [Read more...] about Virtual Singapore project could be test bed for planners
