Oklahoma has always been the nation’s laboratory for capital punishment. It was a state legislator named Bill Wiseman who in 1977 came up with the idea of lethal injection by asking the state medical examiner for a more humane, scientific way to put human beings to death. It looks like Oklahoma might be experimenting again. On Wednesday, the state’s Attorney General and director of corrections announced that a severe nationwide shortage of the drugs needed for lethal injection meant they would be switching to nitrogen inhalation for future executions. Executing prisoners by nitrogen “hypoxia,” which deprives the body of oxygen, has never been tried by any state or nation in the history of the world. OKLAHOMA CITY — As the former Oklahoma attorney general faces a series of ethics controversies that threaten his tenure as Environmental Protection Agency administrator — and his political future — Oklahoma’s senators are standing by Scott Pruitt.Sen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma City Republican, was asked Friday whether he thinks Pruitt should resign.“I don’t,” he told The Oklahoman. “(Administration officials) are still walking through it. EPA has their own ethics investigation, and the hard part about this is all the facts getting out.”Many of the controversies surrounding Pruitt involve Oklahoma. Two EPA employees who reportedly received significant salary increases over the objections of the White House previously worked for Pruitt in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Teachers Union Calls For End To Walkout
POLITICS 04/12/2018 11:23 pm ET Schools will reopen soon after negotiations stall at the state Capitol. By Dave Jamieson The union that coordinated a nearly two-week walkout by Oklahoma teachers invited members to return to work on Friday, declaring victory with the work stoppage while acknowledging not all its goals had been met. The Oklahoma Education Association said it had seen “no significant legislative movement” over the past week, despite flooding the Capitol in Oklahoma City with thousands of teachers each day. The union announced it would support teachers whether they continued to stay off the job or headed back to their classrooms, signaling that most schools would soon reopen. “We recognize that our formal efforts to lobby elected leaders have achieved all that we will be able to accomplish this legislative session,” the union’s president, Alicia Priest, said in a statement. Oklahoma teacher walkout winds down despite lawmakers’ failure to meet demands
Last month, faced with the prospect of a walkout, Oklahoma lawmakers approved measures to raise teachers' salaries an average of $6,100 a year, support staff pay by $1,250 and invest an additional $50 million in classrooms. It marked the first time in 10 years that state lawmakers had raised the teacher salary schedule.
