The Commons defence select committee report into the country said it was a “reasonable assumption” the North could reach the UK already and that it is “almost certain” to be able to carry nuclear warheads to these shores by 2019. It added the UK has a “limited” ballistic missile defence system – but also noted there had been “no sign” of Kim Jong-un wanting to target the UK with nuclear weapons. The report also suggested North Korea could be “dissuaded” from using nuclear weapons – adding the leader was “ruthless… but rational”. It said: “We … [Read more...] about North Korea missiles could reach UK by 2019, MPs warn

Trump’s North Korea diplomacy won’t change the regime
Domestically, accepting the legitimacy of South Korea's government would be tantamount to delegitimizing North Korea's government. The Kim regime is similarly convinced, perhaps with reason, that it needs a nuclear deterrent to survive. Agreeing to disarm, in the leaders' minds, would be suicidal. Moreover, they've been telling their own citizens that having nukes is an existential imperative. … [Read more...] about Trump’s North Korea diplomacy won’t change the regime
U.S. Promises to ‘Increase Flow of Independent Information’ to North Korea
The diplomatic thaw between North and South Korea led to the highly publicized dismantling of propaganda loudspeakers along the border this week, but the U.S. State Department promised on Wednesday that the effort to bring “independent information” to communist North Korea will continue. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert made this commitment during remarks to commemorate North Korea Freedom Week:For more than 60 years the people of North Korea have faced egregious human rights violations in virtually every aspect of life. In addition to the roughly 100,000 individuals, including children and family members of the accused, who suffer in political prison camps, North Koreans face an almost complete denial of fundamental freedoms by their government. Those trying to flee this oppressive environment, if caught, are often tortured or killed. We remain gravely concerned and deeply troubled by these abuses. In tandem with the maximum pressure campaign, we will continue … [Read more...] about U.S. Promises to ‘Increase Flow of Independent Information’ to North Korea
Three American prisoners freed by North Korea are welcomed home by Donald Trump who thanks Kim Jong-un
THREE US prisoners released from a North Korean gulag smile with joy alongside Donald Trump after touching down in the US this morning. Kim Dong-chul, Kim Sang-duk, also known as Tony Kim, and Kim Hak-song had been languishing in a brutal labour camp in the hermit regime for more than a year but were released by Kim Jong-un as gesture of goodwill. Through a translator, Dong-chul declared: "It’s like a dream and we are very happy. We were treated in many different ways. I had to do labour." Trump waved to reporters as he arrived at the air base alongside First Lady Melania Trump, before minutes later boarding the plane to meet with the trio. He then reappeared alongside them as they grinned, shook hands with officials and flashed peace signs to the waiting press. Trump then took questions from reporters, during which he declared: "This is a special night for these three really great people. We want to thank Kim Jong-un. "Frankly we didn't think it was going to happen and … [Read more...] about Three American prisoners freed by North Korea are welcomed home by Donald Trump who thanks Kim Jong-un
‘Grandstanding All Around’: Critics Pan North Korea’s Nuclear Test Site Demolition
North Korea conducted its demolition media event at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site on Thursday, setting off what observers described as a series of explosions that raised a plume of dust and smoke over nearby Mount Mantap. The event was intended to demonstrate Pyongyang’s commitment to denuclearization, but it only reinforced the skepticism of analysts around the world that dictator Kim Jong-un is more interested in destroying the evidence of past illegal nuclear activities. They also doubted the Punggye-ri site will be fully or permanently decommissioned. South Korea’s Yonhap News describes the spectacle, which cannot be shown to the world on video until reporters return to the port city of Wonsan on Friday: The North dynamited the North Portal, also referred to as Tunnel No. 2, at Punggye-ri, a northeastern remote area, at around 11 a.m., they said in a brief pool report delivered by phone. Two other tunnels were destroyed at 2:17 p.m., followed by the explosion of … [Read more...] about ‘Grandstanding All Around’: Critics Pan North Korea’s Nuclear Test Site Demolition
