As Berlin struggles to provide affordable housing to its people, locals talk to our correspondent Vincent McAviney about rent rises and the difficulty in finding accommodation. The Euronews red sofa was set up in Alexanderplatz, in the centre of the city, to see what Berliners think. The complaints started to flood in with one resident saying: “It’s extremely hard to find room to live. It’s extremely expensive. If you find an apartment, there are hundreds of other people who want to live there as well. I’m stuck in my apartment.” Another Berliner told us how rent rises are pricing local people out of the market: “Yes the apartments have become much more expensive for sure, especially when they are renovated. Our apartment was really cheap for its size - but then it was renovated a few years ago and now costs 200 euros more a month. Many people can’t afford that at all.” A third resident explains how she has been looking for a flat for … [Read more...] about Road Trip Europe Day 46 Berlin: Housing prices skyrocket

Berlin celebrates birth of Germany’s first giant panda cubs
BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany’s first giant panda cubs have been born and their mother, Meng Meng, is doing a wonderful job looking after the pink twins who bear no resemblance to their black and white furry parents, Berlin Zoo announced on Monday. Immediately after the first birth, the mother placed the creature on her belly and warmed it with her large paws and soft fur, said the zoo. Within an hour, a second cub had been born. “On Saturday evening, Berlin’s panda population doubled as Germany welcomed its first-ever panda offspring – two of them!” said the Zoo, adding that mother and cubs were all in good health. The zoo is also home to the cubs’ father, Jiao Ching. As pandas with twins usually raise only one of the cubs, the zoo is actively supporting Meng Meng, 6, in the rearing process and has enlisted experts from China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Zoo to help. It is notoriously difficult to get giant pandas to … [Read more...] about Berlin celebrates birth of Germany’s first giant panda cubs
